You’d be right to expect an organisation as dedicated to enhancing and protecting the environment as the Royal Horticultural Society to build sustainability into everything it does.
We take the stewardship of our Grade II listed building very seriously indeed. We operate in a manner that is fully compliant with ISO 14001 and BS 8901 standards, the quality benchmarks for planning and managing sustainable events that govern all aspects of the event organiser’s supply chain.
We minimise and manage waste, and recover energy through the harvesting of waste. Low energy lighting, energy-efficient hand-dryers, biodegradable hand soap, 100% recycled paper products, sourcing produce locally, using natural lighting and ventilation whenever possible... all these measures add up to a positive impact on the environment and the community.
CORPORATE LITERATURE
All leaflets and inserts are printed on 50% FSC certified paper and 50% recycled paper.
AMBIENT DECORATION
The Halls are decorated with potted, rather than stem-cut, flowers and plants. This eliminates the environmental impact of using cut flowers, the majority of which are grown in monocultures and treated with insecticides and pesticides. Also once harvested, cut flowers are transported – sometimes hundreds of miles by air – in temperature-controlled units where they have only a short shelf life and emit, rather than absorb, CO2.
TRAVELLING
To reduce traffic congestion and pollution, we encourage visitors and staff to use pedestrian routes and public transport where possible. Furthermore, Westminster City Council has installed additional bicycle parking racks and free motorcycle bays in Vincent Square.
Barclay’s Cycle hire is also available in London with two docking stations close by. These are available 24 hours a day, all year round. The scheme is self-service. No booking is required: simply turn up and go. The two closest docking stations are on Vincent Square and Greycoat Street, immediately outside the Lindley Hall.

Sound system: The Lindley Hall has two sound systems:
A tannoy system designed to handle requirements such as general announcements to exhibitions or shows and/or background music.
A PA system, which is available for hire. This is suitable for high quality speech and music and can be supplemented with additional equipment, as necessary.
Lighting: It was the monarch King Edward VII who had mooted the idea of the Royal Horticultural Society having a purpose-built exhibition hall for its shows. On 22 July 1904, together with the Society's patron Queen Alexandra, he officially declared the venue open.
The Lindley Hall was designed by Edwin J Stebbs, and his focus on achieving as much natural light as possible remains a key part of the character of the building more than 100 years later. The space, light and elegance inherent in its Edwardian design create a breathtaking effect for organisers and visitors alike. The Lindley Hall continues to set a gold standard for every type of event, hosting conferences, exhibitions, fashion shows, banquets, weddings, product launches and many other events, both public and private. It also provides a stunning backdrop for music videos, car launches, adverts and films. Organisers are able to take advantage of the Hall’s stunning glass-vaulted ceiling for an abundance of natural light or can opt for full blackout.
