» L'Esperanza 2004 (Unknown Remix)

Label: Bootleg
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: Hard Trance

I heard that there was a new white label mix of this floating about a couple of weeks ago and after a few phonecalls to a couple of trusted vinyl stockists, I am now the proud owner of one of the 500 test pressings.

For those of you amongst us who are unfamiliar with the original (and the can't be many of you), it was and is one of the defining tunes in the trance genre. Written and produced by the now well established Svenson & Gielen AKA Airscape, it had everything a tune needed to make any dancefloor erupt, and found it's way onto numerous albums & compilations including Gatecrasher's Discotech.
Thumbs up

This new promo is pressed on one sided, blue vinyl with no label or producer's details so I wouldn't mind betting that Alex Gold & co at Xtravaganza haven't sanctioned this one!
Shocked

This remix is tougher than any of the original offerings, starting with a smooth but hard kickdrum and a cool off-beat clap rythm. The tune progresses fairly slowly with subtle additions being made to the percussion and a cool undertone layering effect which is a stroke of genius and really adds alot of atmosphere. By the time the bassline kicks in, the tune already has an air of expectancy about it. The bassline is simple but very effective, keeping the same off-beat melody as the original. After 8 bars the classic chords begin risin and falling and a symbol crashes after each loop. Then a flared drumroll begins and gradually increases in volume before a series of huge crashes and a wicked reverse hoover sound, signal the start of the break.
Cool

The main break sticks quite close to the original in structure with the soft layered undercurrents washing under the sharp synth stab melody and building bar by bar. This mix does add an extra twist by overlapping a loop of the beginning of the sequence at the end of each bar which helps build more anticipation (it's kinda hard to explain but one listen and you'll know what I mean).

The break is a little longer than it really needs to be in truth, but that doesn't detract from the production quality or the tune's overall credibility. The long break concludes with a quick kickdrum sequence, a long drumroll which has been nicely reverbed, and then the 4 beat drum sequence at the end (which most of you will remember as the signal to go mental) is overlapped by a deep female voice which is heavily vocoded proclaiming "L'Esperanza"!
Scratches Chin

The tune then proceeds at full force, placing all the components together and adding some brilliant digital effects to the layering underneath the main melody and keeping the catchy overlapping bar loop at the end of each bar.

I know that there are some people that don't like to hear endless remixes of classic tunes, but as far as I'm aware, this one hasn't been touched before. It's a solid piece of production and whoever is responsible for it has obviously strived for perfection. With it being harder than the original, it will happily sit in most of the harder dj's boxes (especially those who like a trancy element to their sets) and for those of us that like to drop one or two classics into their sets, it should go down a treat.

Overall it's a nicely put together remix of an absolute anthem which will undoubtedly invoke plenty of memories amongst many of the nations trancefloors. Top Notch Stuff!!!!!

far from lost. I reckon reworkings and remixes are pukka. I like mixing up old and new in most sets I play so if new mixes of old tunes come along which are different from the original, I reckon it can make ur set stand out. But I know alot of people feel differently. Whatever works for you I guess. Personally I love it!!!!
