As part of Goa trance act Juno Reactor, Mike Maguire is considered one of the undisputed pioneers of electronic music. He rarely plays in London these days, which makes it all the more special that he’s headlining 11.11.11, the Liquid Records Eleventh Birthday Party, this Friday 11 November. As the countdown to Friday night begins, Chris Williams caught up with this living legend…
Hi Mike, its good to see you back behind the decks again after a break in recent years, how has 2011 been treating you?
So far , so good. Really enjoyed Ozora in Hungary and Antaris in Germany back in the summer.. Great spirit at both of those festivals. We also released a Juno Reactor remix album 'Inside the Reactor' in July..
You started of DJing in the late 70s/early 80s in the new wave scene, who were your major influences around this time?
I started DJng in 1977 playing soul and funk imports in a few dodgy nightclubs in South London.. chrome and carpet style places. I Worked in Groove Soho in the early 80s listening to Prince, Grandmaster Flash and a lot of early electro.. That was a great record shop and a brilliant time to be in Soho.
How did you tread your path from the new wave/new beat scenes through to acid house and your early work with Juno Reactor?
I worked at an import/export record company Greyhound Records so always got to hear what was happening via record shops all over the country. When acid house broke we were on top of it going to clubs like Spectrum and Enter the Dragon.. Ben Watkins (Juno main man) came to Greyhound with his Psychoslaphead tracks. We were both really into new beat, lots of early Belgian and German techno.

Having travelled the world and played some amazing gigs, which one stand out for you in front of all others?
I think the Longleat party was amazing 1994.. Also we had a night called A.C.I.D ( A Concept In Dance) in Cowper Street, Shoreditch around the same time. Ahimsa parties were always crazy over in the Quarry at Barking and Tyssen Street..
With the release of Juno Reactor’s ‘Transmissions’ in 1993, you caught the Goa wave as it happened, what were the influences that brought about this album?
I was spending a lot of time in Goa the few years before ‘Transmissions’ and realised that all the stuff Ben and me loved was being played, Front 242, Yello, lots of new beat. Nothing was much faster than 125 bpm at the time and it felt very groovy.
On the production side of things, which piece of work are you most proud of, and have you got any future work in the pipeline?
All the early Juno LPs were great to work on, because we didn't know where we were going as there wasn't really a scene.. There will be a new Juno album next year.
What does psychedelic mean to you, and how has the ‘scene’ evolved in your eyes over the years?
Colourful hypnotic sounds. I am amazed that the scene is still so strong after so many years.. Lots of good people having fun and not pretentious at all.. Getting down and dirty in a warehouse with a kicking system is always going to be a blast. Long may it continue!
We look forward to hearing you bang out some tunes at the Liquid 11th birthday event on Friday, see you then!
