Glade returns! ‘It’s back. Revolutionised. Stripped back to its shiny grass roots’! Three cheers for all involved! The size may be smaller but the line up is as big as it ever was – seeing the likes of Trentemoller, Dreadzone, Tristan, Gaudi & Ans gracing the stages to name but a few! Ans is not just an artist playing at the event, but also one of the main guys behind this epic festival and I thought this would be a good time to catch up with him.
Your involvement in the electronic music scene begun back in the late 1980’s when you discovered acid house. What or who first got you into electronic music and what was the first record you bought?
As a kid in the 80s I loved a lot of the electronic kind of pop, Ultravox and that kind of thing. My Cousin’s boyfriend, now husband, wrote the music for Human League and had done some of his own dance music that he played me. I must have been about 14 or 15 and was hooked. I can’t remember what my first dance record was but I remember loving Stakker Humanoid and Run DMC.
You went on to run a succession of parties and club nights, including the renowned ‘Rude’ at SW1. What made you decide to promote your own events?
Ha! You know about that? Well you know, I wanted to play tunes. Everything then and even now is about making a place for me to play my music! And it comes with a lot of fringe benefits. I also loved partying, still do. But then it was everything. I did some club nights whilst at Bristol Uni in the early 90s and it just went on from there. Rude was crazy. Started in 1993 and was every Friday for 2 years, 1200 people, and then up the whole weekend. Not exactly the healthiest lifestyle but it was bloody brilliant.
You’re also a prolific producer, one of your more recent artist names being ‘The Electric Ant’. What’s the story behind this name?
Not that prolific. But have done some stuff over the years. Electric Ant has never really fruited as a project and one day I’ll get round to releasing some EPs. The Electric Ant is a story by Philip Dick about a robot who thinks he’s a human, realises he’s not but then everyone else realises that he is the source of all reality just as they kill him. Mad story. I loved it. And my name is Ans. Electric Ans? No, Electric Ant. Nowadays though my focus on a project with Matt Allaby called FØRM which is sounding sweet and we have out first EP out soon on UltraDelux records. You’ll catch us on the Origin Stage.
In 1998 your attention turned to psychedelic trance. What lead you to this?
I moved to South Africa at the end of ’96 and built a studio there, started a record label called ‘Protea Records’ and we did a series of releases on a more techno edge. I went to a Tsuyoshi Suzuki Vortex party thinking what the f*ck is this? And loved it and then as the sun rose, standing on a hill with the dancefloor rocking below one of my tunes, ‘Turquoise Dreams’, was played by Suzuki. It was epic. I realised this is what I’m almost already doing. It was a brilliant moment.
As a producer; do you have a particular way in which you create a track, or does it vary?
I’m not a particularly good producer so it takes me ages. But I normally like to find a load of sweet loops that work together and not even start arranging until that excites the hell out of me. I think most people work like this. But I’m not interested in writing fodder. They have to be proper belters. Which of course makes it harder.
What would you say is your favourite piece of equipment in the studio to work with?
The computer of course. But Ableton is more fun and creative than Logic now. Love it.
Would you say the music industry has changed much over recent years, and if so, how?
Yeah, that’s a big question. It has obviously because of the net and downloading. I started releasing vinyl singles and selling up to 8000 units. CD albums then became the thing, especially in psytrance, and similar amounts were sold. Now it’s all online. A few hundred CD sales but you know most people download and not such quantities. There’s also A LOT of rubbish music so the gems are harder to find. It used to be more exciting releasing stuff and owning music that’s for sure. Before it could so easily be copied.
You’re also co-owner of the legendary and highly-respected label Nano Records What are the ups and what are the downs (if any) of running a label, and what defines Nano’s sound?
Nano Records was born in the cauldron of them amazing parties in South Africa at sunrise. It came out of us wanting to make and release sweet music for that time. Optimistic, fresh, cheeky - You know. It’s been great fun and we have amazing artists on the label. There’s not been downs, it’s been all very positive.
As if that wasn’t hectic enough – you are also busy organising the welcome return of Glade 2011! How does it feel to be back?
Totally awesome. It’s not just back but it’s back to how it was when we started. Small and intimate. A proper party. Can’t wait to see it happen.
With all the preparation and hours of slog that must go into organising a festival, it must have been a very hard, but understandable, decision to cancel Glade 2010. How do you feel looking back?
Yeah that was all shit. But the festival had a momentum that was taking it in the wrong direction. Cancellation has meant we’re able to hit the reset button which was needed I feel.
The Glade websites hints that Glade 2011 is Glade Version 2.0? What does this mean?
Well it’s nod to software isn’t it. It’s core is the same but it has new features. Interface will be a bit different. You’ll just have to come and see.
Glade 2011 looks to be of the finest - with 9 awesome stages; including the infamous Rabbit Hole stage and the introduction of the Nanosystems stage. How did you decide on what stages to host?
Instinct darling. We like to work with people who do the best stuff the best. Simple.
When choosing the artists for Glade – what do you look for?
It’s a mixture of what we like. There’s a load of us who live and breathe electronic music. But we also check what forums and facebook etc are talking about, check it out and if it floats our boats then we book them. But a lot of the booking is not done by the main team but by the respective stages and their crews. Part of how we decide who to involve is to do with that.
You will be playing on the InSpiral stage this year. What sort of delights can we look forward to hearing from you?
Proper dirty dance music according to my head. I’m doing 2 gigs one in InSpiral which will be techno led. Not too full on. Groovy stuff. The FØRM gig will be much larger tunes, more psychedelic. More for a big stage. Can’t wait.
