Amber D has Double Trouble

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 29-12-10 10:40

Amber D is a well known and liked DJ in the UK hard dance scene and she's been a busy girl. Not satisfied with becoming the proud mother of twins she's been in the studio and produced a double CD to go with the children. We find out how she managed to find the time.

Hi Amber, belated congratulations on the birth of your twins, what are their names?

Thank you! They are called Sasha & India.

Are they identical twins?

No, they’re not, I somehow produced two eggs at once, and then Lee managed to fertilize them both! Amazing . . . haha!

It is double trouble or double angel delight?

DOUBLE TROUBLE! Try no sleep for 5 weeks, it’s a good job we love each other put it that way!

When did you find out you were having twins?

We found out very early on in the pregnancy, when we had the scan and the doctor told us, I swore at Lee and tried to kick him. Then the doctor told me it was my fault, as I had produced two eggs at once. I think I apologised.

Any plans for any more?

I said I’d like more, but I think we’ve both decided that enough’s enough now!

Although early days would you like either or both to follow you and Lee into the music/DJing business?

Definitely, they have already been bought their first piano and they will be encouraged towards music without a doubt but as I did, they will make sure they leave school with lots of qualifications also.

Talking of twins, your new double CD - Amber D – D-Day The Album; two CDs, one album, 36 tracks! Why did you choose now to release the album?

The album has been planned for quite some time, so it fell into place quite nicely that it would be released now, while I am away some of the time bringing up my little ones. It means although I may be away from the scene for a little bit, the Album is doing the work for me while I cannot do live sets. But saying that I’m back DJing again this weekend (for Atomik Weekender) so you didn’t get rid of me for long!

Looking at the first CD, “Remembrance Mix 2001-2009” as the title suggests this is features your finest production/studio work, which are your personal favourites?

I still love “Rush On Me” and also “Amber’s Theme” which is a bit more recent. They all have a story behind them though. When I was pregnant, I sorted out my studio again at home, so that’s set back up again now, so expect a lot more production, and maybe another album soon!

There are a good few collaborations on both CDs; Morgan, Ben Stevens, Dark By Design, Paul F, Kye Shand and more. Tell us more about some of the collaborations and how they came about.

I just worked with all the people I knew had beer in their studios. That’s about it! And also I wanted to work with artists with different styles, to reflect my love for different genres of hard dance.

Moving onto the second of the two CDs – “The New Regime 2010” – the album gives the impression that this is a past and present compilation – is that a fair assessment?

Definitely. You can tell the difference in the styles, and see where I have come from as an artist. Although the remembrance mix has more hard house in it, I have still made two hard house tracks this year (with Kirsty Lee James & Lucy Fur), so I have never strayed too far from my roots.

All the tracks on CD 2 look to me to be brand new, very few I actually recognise from the titles at least. Tell me more about One Night in Haslamabad? Sounds intriguing! Anything to do with a night at the Haslams?

One night in Haslamabad is a weird track. With a weird turkish vocal. It was a bit of a gamble, but it really works! It reminds me of a track on the film “Don’t mess with the Zohan”. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean.

Another track title that caught the attention was The Decimation of Elizabeth Black – who is Elizabeth Black and please tell me more about the track. Is it a reference to Plan B – The Defamation of Strickland Banks?

Nope! It is actually a cover of Ram Jam - Black Betty. It’s bloody brilliant too! Good skillz from Mr West there!

There seems to be a lot of activity in the hard dance arena this year, particularly with a couple of high-profile album launches such as Andy Farley’s and of course yourself. Why do you think that is?

We’re all bored and the weather is shit in the UK, so we just stay holed up in our studios!

Looking at your own studio work, how would you say your style has evolved? Is the album a good representation of all the styles that interests you?

Definitely. My style has always incorporated new sounds that come around in the hard dance scene, but this has ALWAYS been the case with me. I’ve never stuck to one genre. If you listen to any of my compilations I’ve released over the years, you’ll see I’ve always incorporated at least 3 sub genres of hard dance into one mix. My way of seeing it is there is SO much amazing music out there, I would be so bored if I just stuck to one type of Hard Dance. I don’t see how I could. As a musician, I am interested in the whole spectrum of music, so just staying put with one would be difficult. It keeps it interesting. I don’t like to be governed by genre, end of.

You are also a classical musician, now that you are a mum do you think you will slow down hard dance wise and ramp up the nursery rhymes or will you keep up with the DJing and production?

NO! We are making hardstyle and hard house versions of all known nursery rhymes as we speak! India already loves hard house and sasha is more a daddys girl and likes airy fairy trance. Oh well, she’ll learn Wink

You’ve played at the legendary Tidy weekenders, and note that your album is being released on Tidy. Does this mean you are back with Tidy?

I never left Tidy in the first place. I think all I ever did was change DJ agency’s which is a totally different thing altogether. I’ve always had a great working relationship with Tidy and always will.

As part of the promotion for the album, you launched a tour at the Atomik Weekender in Prestatyn in November, where else can we see you play?

For all DJ dates go to www.amberd.co.uk

We are loving the artwork for the album; what formats will the album be available in?

The artwork was by my cousin, Mark who also did 50 cent’s computer game and the new Formula 1 game. He put himself in the game as well, he’s in the crowd haha.

We see that some of the proceeds from sales of the album will go towards the “Help For Heros” charity – a great cause but with so many charities out there is there a particular reason for choosing this one?

I’ve always been amazed at what our boys go through and have a few personal friends who have been effected by the war in Iraq and wanted to do something, however small, just to show I care.

What was the last album you bought?

Ummmm - oh I know, I found Ministry Of Sound, The Annual 2 on Ebay. This was my favourite album when I was a teenager. I listened to it over and over again (whilst playing Theme Park on the Playstation!) so I bought it again.

Many thanks Amber!
