Celebrating Roots & Chichime's birthdays with Zeus aka Peter Well

Reported by Tara / Submitted 24-11-10 19:50

Peter Well first came to the UK from his native South Africa to play football but was soon to find an even more addictive hobby: partying at events like Escape from Samara then DJing, promoting and producing. Starting off playing hard trance, he found his niche playing psy trance (as Zeus) and techno (as Peter Well). Running Roots Events and PointZero Records with production partner Fabrizio Motta (Fabry) aka DJ Metaphase, things were on the up and up for this talented and hardworking lad. Then disaster stuck, in the form of a near-fatal stabbing.

A couple of years on, he’s back in the studio as half of Groove System (with Fabry) and about to celebrate Roots’ Birthday with Chichime at Brixton’s Mass this Saturday night...

Since you were last featured on here two and a half years ago a lot has happened in your life — you were almost killed, and now you’re about to become a Dad — proving that the old adage, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is certainly true. How have the events of the last couple of years changed your attitude to life, if at all?

Well, first of all, I’m very happy to be here still and I can only thank the Greatest of all out there for sparing me and to bless me with a wonderful child to come. Life obviously has to go on and I’m doing everything the best I can, by enjoying every moment of what lays ahead and appreciating life very much.

You first came to the UK to play football from your native South Africa then fell in love with dance music at events like Escape from Samsara at the Fridge, which is where you met once of your partners in crime, Fabry, otherwise known as DJ Metaphase. Do you ever wonder what might have happened if you’d never discovered dance music? How did you get from football to DJing and producing psy trance?

Coming to London was a big decision. I packed my bags within a week of making my mind up and tried to fulfil my dream as a football player. Not knowing much about the approach to the professional sport world, I soon became discouraged and started to pay more attention towards partying where, as you’ve mentioned, I met Fabry and started my DJing career, which finally led to producing. If I never discovered dance music then I would certainly be back home, farming and doing sport. But nevertheless, I’m still here and enjoying every moment of what I love most.

What have been the highlights of your DJing and production career so far?

Starting Roots back in 2001 was a very exciting time and after a few years break, I got Roots back into the scene with my new partner, Fabry, in 2005. We also started Pointzero Records in the same year and with no experience at all, there was quite a lot to learn which was very exciting. Playing for various other organisations like Antiworld, Halcyon, Teknotribe (South Africa), Fu-cha Gatherring (South Africa) and Roots to name a few, and enjoying every moment of it, was and still is a huge highlight in my DJing career. Fabry and I also started a new act, Groove System, producing full-on psy trance and working hard on a pure and powerful production.

As a label owner and DJ you’re also constantly exposed to new sounds, what up-and-coming DJs and producers have caught your ears recently?

We’ve just released El-Nino’s EP, ‘Trust’. I think he’s a very talented producer who works very hard in the studio. Psybeam, consisting of Fabry and old friend Paulo (DJ Peace), is also a new act to look out for with some very well produced music. On the DJ front, I think Monster also has a nice solid sound going around and is also one to look out for.

PointZero Records, the label you run with Fabry/Metaphase, is still going strong and you’ve just released another compilation, ‘Funky Town’, put together by Lukka. What’s been happening with the label and what plans do you have over the coming months?

‘Funky Town’ is the latest compilation released on the label and was compiled by our newest member on the panel, Lukka. For a while things went a bit slow but luckily started to pick up again with us releasing our latest compilation ‘Funky Town’, El-Nino’s latest EP, ‘Trust’ and we as a label also went digital. All our current and back catalogues are currently available on all major downloading sites. We’ve got a few more EPs coming out in the new year followed by more compilations and artist’s albums. We’re hoping to put on some label events so please check this space….

‘Funky Town’ is also the name of a track you’ve produced with Fabry under your Groove System guise. How did the track come about and why the alias? What else do you have happening on the production front?

‘Funky Town’ came about while writing at the old studio in Kentish Town. Like every other track, we’re just experimenting with new tricks and ideas and working towards a good and powerful sounding track. It just so happened that we ended up with both our track name and compilation name as ‘Funky Town’, representing it as it says, funky and groovy.

Right now we’ve relocated into a much better sounding studio with more hardware and soft synths etc to create a better sound of which people can recognise us. Most of my attention goes into Groove System but I’m also working on my solo project(s), Zeus and Peter Well, which is still well and truly something for the future.

As well as running the label with Fabry you’ve also put on some amazing Roots events over the years. Out of all of your parties, do you have a favourite Roots?

Most of the Roots events are my favourite because all the ones we’ve pulled of so far, whether big or small, ended with an amazing atmosphere and people leaving very happy and satisfied. We tend to put good energy into our events and keep ourselves open to people’s opinions etc. To create this magical atmosphere, we usually tend to bring some of the best artists from around the globe and have the event very well decorated throughout and to top it all up, we usually have the best crowd in the house.

Since you started DJing in 1999 the dance scene has gone through a lot of changes, with the way we play, produce, distribute and promote music all evolving in the digital age. How has this affected you as a DJ, producer, promoter and label manager?

Yes I agree, the scene has gone through a lot of changes. I think it did actually get much smaller here in the UK but quite more intimate. And on the other hand, it’s growing in other countries. As for a DJ and producer point of view, it still makes up for it all cos here you can enjoy well organised events, whether underground or commercial and on the other side of the pond you’ll experience a totally different environment and this just encourages us to try to expand more to reach the bigger audiences. Music is nowadays also more easily accessible and DJ and production equipment have become cheaper which allows more people to enter the scene to start make a career out of it.

If a movie was made of your life, who would you chose to play Peter Well?

I think it can only be me cause who else knows me better other than me? Everything I experienced has such a great meaning in my life and if I wouldn’t need to act anything, I’ll just play it out naturally. A friend of mine actually went on and wrote a book about our lives and experiences here in London, and reading about all the crazy times we had was truly amazing. I have one of the original copies sent to me but whether it got published or not on the end, I’m not so sure.

Are you still a big football fan? If so, what team do you support?

I’m not particularly into one specific football team. There are a few teams I really like but mostly good and exciting football attracts my attention. I hardly have the time to follow football as I’m way too busy dividing my time into playing football, producing music and promoting Roots and Pointzero Records as well as all the other hobbies I have. I have to admit that other than playing football I do like to support the South African (Springbok) rugby team, as I’m a true rugby fan as well.

You’re going to be a Dad soon. What would you say to your kid if they decided to become a DJ and/or promoter?

Whatever my child decides in life, they should go for it but must do it to their fullest potential and with the purest of heart.

Next Saturday 27 November you’re having a double Roots and Chichime birthday celebration at Brixton’s Mass Club, featuring Logic Bomb, Atomic Pulse, Dejavoo, Monster, DJ Lukka, Sofire and of course yourself and Fabry. Happy birthday! It’s been a while since you did a Roots party, what are you, looking forward to the most?

I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere. Roots tend to attract a very friendly crowd and together with Chichime, I’m really hoping that this combined birthday event is going to be something really special and spectacular. It’s an absolute pleasure to work with Chichime’s promoter, Monster, and we’ve been planning this event for quite some time now. I’m really looking forward to be back behind the decks for our birthday event.

At the Roots & Chichime birthday celebration the second room is going to be a Reggae Battle Arena hosted by Dub Force 4. How do you reckon the dub and reggae is going to work with the psy trance? Are you a big dub and reggae fan?

I just recently started to listen to dubstep and do occasionally listen to a bit of reggae as well and I the idea we’re putting together here is to try and bring new people into the psy-scene and hopefully build on it and maybe we can get the scene to grow again.

Thanks Peter! Looking forward to getting back to Roots on Saturday!
