Double trouble - Logica keep it in the psy trance family

Reported by Tara / Submitted 05-10-10 08:03

It’s a cliché to say that music is in someone’s blood, but when the DJs in question are Alok and Bhaskar Petrillo, twin sons of respected Brazilian psy trance DJs Swarup and Ekanta, the cliché does indeed seem accurate. Although they didn’t even like electronic music when they were younger, they started mixing when they were just 12 years old and soon formed the dynamic psy trance duo Logica.

They’re currently in the UK and headlining the Alpha Omega room at Halcyon on Friday 19 November @ Ewer Street Warehouse alongside Hallucinogen, Prometheus, Avalon, Mood Deluxe, Liquid Ross and Neutrino, while Astrix and X-NoiZe celebrate HOMmega’s 13th birthday in the other room alongside Dejavoo, Libra 9, Zeus, Matt Loraine b2b Andi Leppard and Andy Forse. We were lucky enough to catch up with Bhaskar for an exclusive HarderFaster interview…

Hi Bhaskar, welcome to London! You’re here for the next few months, why did you come to London and what are your plans while you’re in the UK?

Hi! Thanks! First of all, we moved to London to study. However, we also came with the intention of improving our knowledge about electronic music. So when we finally arrive back in Brazil, we’ll have a more diverse knowledge of music.

It’s been fantastic! London is a wonderful place. Logica is a project who always try to innovate, so we hope that the people here accept our style.

Well Halcyon will certainly have some of the best electronic music from a number of different genres for you to check out! But actually, you’ve been brought up listening to psy trance all your lives haven’t you?

My Father and Mother have been playing for the last 15 years. At the beginning we didn’t like psy trance or other kind of electronic music. We were too young. But nowadays we couldn't live without all of this. We started to listen to psy trance when we were with 12 years old!

Can you remember when you first learnt to mix?

Yes! We were 12 years old. At the beginning it was just for fun.

For those reading this who don’t know you, please tell us a bit about yourselves and your backgrounds.

Logica is a project formed by the twin brothers Alok Petrillo and Bhaskar Petrillo. Our lives are concerned with our studies and music. We’ve just finished high school and now we’re going to university.

Our lives have been quite intense in recent years. We play almost every weekend. We know almost all the states of Brazil. We’ve already played at big parties and festivals around Latin America and in Europe. This is an amazing job! We have no set time to produce; we just make music when we are inspired.

Your parents Swarup and Ekanta got you into music from an early age and you decided to start getting ‘serious’ about psy trance and playing back to back when you were just 12 years old. What was the inspiration behind this decision? Have you ever thought about rebelling and getting into pop music or country and western?

Well, when we first started, we liked a really hardcore psy trance style, and we didn’t really like the music my Dad and Mom played at the time. But after a year playing we got more into serious and underground psy trance music. Since then we got really interested in that style and began to produce it. Nowadays we rebelled a little bit from my Mom and Dad’s music and we are trying to do more techno influenced music hehe.

What’s the best piece of advice your parents have given you?

Our parents have always been normal parents even with a different scenario. They always say we need to study and follow our dreams, and not just think we are DJs forever. From time to time, they give us advice about our career, of what way they recommend us to take and it’s always useful for our lives.

On your Facebook page you describe your music as “psychedelic techy trance”. Please describe the Logica sound for those who’ve never heard you play.

This “techy trance” means we’ve got a big influence of techno music in our trance, but the soul keeps psychedelic. Have a listen to our myspace our soundcloud and you can notice what we are talking about.

Who or what have been your biggest influences growing up? And now?

We’ve always had a similar taste in music. Our biggest influences growing up were Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Wolfmother, Rage Against the Machine, the Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, etc.

And now? Well it’s still the same. However we have been listening to the new trends. Today we hear all types of electronic music, from Goa trance to house music, and always try to get an innovated formula in our tracks based on different styles.

You’ve produced some wicked tracks. What software and hardware do you prefer to use in the studio? What’s your favourite piece of kit at the moment?

We use the Logic.pro 9. In our opinion, this is the best program to make music. We recommend the use of ABL Bassline (Vst plugin). It’s an “infinite” plugin.

The psy trance scene in Brazil sounds like it’s one of the best in the world. When I finally go to Brazil for a holiday, which parties and festivals should I go to?

It’s true — Brazil has an amazing psy trance scene. You can find really nice parties. If some one arrives in Brazil they should definitely go to Universo Paralello (BA), 303 Art Festival (BA), Ecologic (ES), Conscience (PE), GOA (MG), Off Love (AM), etc.

You’ve recently been collaborating with Aphid Moon, and have also done tracks with Dick Trevor, Avalon, Burn in Noise and Cosmosis. Do you think being twins and working so closely together helps the creative process, or does it make it more difficult to work with people that might not be on your wavelength?

It’s always good to get into the studio with brilliant minds like the ones you mentioned above. We have a different style from all of them, so the good thing about it is that we can mix and try to do a totally different track. About being two, it’s a really good thing. We always sit together and talk about ideas for our next tracks and we have the freedom and the intimacy to say our true opinions to each other, so the music always stays with our true faces.

What are you favourite five tracks of all time?

The Prodigy – ‘Smack My Bitch Up’
Silver Surfers – ‘Chemical Structures’
The First Stone – ‘Led’
Dj Ekanta – ‘Juremix’
Sebastian – ‘Walkman’

And the five tracks that never leave your CD wallet right now?

Brainiac vs Materia – ‘Unsane’
Materia – ‘Clear Tenor’
The First Stone – ‘Jimi’
Logica – ‘The Pursuit’
28 vs. Xorex – ‘Tricoma’

If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing to earn a living?

We would be trying life in a different way. I (Bhaskar) am really interested in the film industry, and Alok already thought about many different types of jobs.

Thanks for an amazing set at Waveform Festival last month. Did you get the chance to experience the awesome variety of electronic music on offer there? How did you find your set?

Yeah, it was a really nice party. We really enjoyed our live set and the whole festival. As soon as we arrived there we walked around the festival to know all the stages and they were great. For us from Brazil it’s a completely different atmosphere at the festivals in the UK. Thanks a lot to everyone that were there and for the whole organization of the festival.

You've just played at Tranceformation over the weekend. How are you finding the London squat party scene compared with the psy scene in Brazil?

We were really impressed with the party. It’s another reality from Brazil. Comparing to Brazil, everything is different, from the decoration to the energy of the people. It’s really underground here and we can always enjoy the parties with a incomparable freedom. In Brazil it’s more straight and people are quite exigent. But both have their good points and for us it will be always nice to experience different things within the psy trance scene.

While you’re in the UK you’re also playing at Halcyon on Friday 19 November alongside Hallucinogen, Astrix and a host of the world’s top psy trance names. Who else at Halcyon are you looking forward to seeing play? And how will your set at the warehouse party differ from that at a festival?

Yes! This will also be a great party. We really looking forward to see Hallucinogen’s set (we’ve never seen him) and Avalon’s set (we really enjoy his music). Well, festivals have a different energy from big parties, so probably the live set will be really different. But we are not sure yet about the changes. Just expect something out of the ordinary!

Thanks for your time guys and looking forward to seeing you play again at Halcyon!
