Rising Suns, Armada and National Treasures: An Inteview with Aly & Fila

It all started somewhere between the Mediterranean and Red Sea. It’s the ‘black land’ of Egypt, where the story of Aly & Fila came to life. 5000 years of genesis - including its world-famous pharaohs, pyramids and ancient civilization – later, another thing became part of its culture. Pure trance music, from the hands of Aly Amr Fathalah and Fadi Wassef Naguib. For Aly & Fila, things really kicked off in 2003, when their ‘Eye of Horus’ turned into a big club hit, played out by all trance-minded A-list DJ’s. It would soon be clear that the Egyptian producers were much more than a one-hit wonder.
Next Friday sees the UK launch of their debut album 'Rising Sun' at The Gallery, Ministry of Sound. HarderFaster catch up with them ahead of the event...
You’re playing in London at The Gallery on July 23rd. What makes The Gallery a special place and what are you looking forward to about playing in London?
I love playing at the Gallery; I first played in January 2008 then again this March. The atmosphere is amazing, and what a venue and sound system, everything is well organised. The great thing about London is it’s also a very cosmopolitan city, a mix of different countries in one city, there were so many Egyptian fans that came to see our last performance at Gallery, which was great!
It’s the launch for your debut album ‘Rising Sun,’ what can clubbers expect to hear?
Its our UK launch, the tour has already been to other countries. There are a lot of different tracks on the album, different styles of trance from down-tempo to uplifting driving trance, we hope the fans like the diversity.
How does it feel to finally have your first studio album completed?
Feels great, we wanted to take out time to complete it, and we are very happy with final product; it’s always a great feeling for a musician to complete their first artist album.
You are well known for you great productions and remixes, is it different when you have to write a full album?
It’s the same formula; of course it takes a longer period of time as you collecting a group of tracks rather than a single or a remix, but it’s the same formula.
Are you happy with how the album has turned out and which is your favourite track?
We are very happy with final product. Our favourite track?! That would be unfair as we like every track in its own way.
Back in Egypt you guys are pretty much national treasures; I hear the tourist board have been in contact with you?
National Treasures (we are not that old hehehehe), but yes they have contacted us to be in the next worldwide campaign for Egypt that we are proud to be considered for, it will be amazing experience!
What is the dance scene like in Egypt?
It is cool, very housey but we are trying to spread the trance feeling with our radio show every week on Nile FM etc.
Describe your most memorable gig to date…
Wow, that is sooooo hard to answer as we have had so many memorable gigs over the year, which we are so thankful to the promoters and fans for giving us the chance to do so. Love touring South America/Latin America, the crowd are so amazing there, Asia, Europe, North America, and not forgetting Australia, to play Armin van Buuren - A State of Trance annual celebration 4 years in a row is something we are very proud of.
You’re music is known for being very vivid and emotional, where do you get the inspiration for your tracks?
We get inspiration from all kinds of stuff, travelling, different cultures, all things of every day life.
‘Future Sound of Egypt’ has nearly reached its 150th episode, why do you think it is so popular?
Think the fans know what they will get each week with the radio show, a lot of exclusive tracks, and a journey of trance.
Describe your relationship with Armin Van Buren and ‘Armada’?
We have a great relationship with Armin and Armada, they have both supported us for many years and continue to do so and we have massive thanks to them for that. Our record label Future Sound of Egypt Recordings became a sublabel on Armada music in February, they are amazing to work with.
What does the rest of 2010 have in store for the two of you?
To keep releasing our singles off the album, we just released the extended mixes a few days back. We already have some remixes out and there's more to come over the summer. The worldwide tour has also kicked off so that will keep us busy for the rest of the year!
I heard a rumour that you have made people cry (with happiness) on the dance floor, what’s the story here?
In India a fan was crying when we played, also seen this South America, we are happy that we can touch peoples emotions with our music.
It’s a pretty decent line-up at The Gallery that you guys are headlining; Simon Patterson, John 00 Fleming, M.I.K.E. Are you looking forward to seeing any of these other acts?
Of course, always look forward to seeing the other acts on same night as we play, they are all great acts and great people so I'm really looking forward to it!

We are very excited to welcome back Egyptian big room duo ‘ALY AND FILA’ to the Ministry turntables. Back in March, their ‘sun kissed’ trance caused absolute mayhem in the Box!
