Judge Jules under the microscope

Reported by Agnes Klos / Submitted 07-07-10 08:04

Jules O'Riordan known better under the stage name Judge Jules was born on 26th October 1965 in North London. While being a law student Jules together with Norman Jay established themselves as central figures of Rare Groove days, breaking into abandoned premises to stage warehouse parties. Jules got into the House scene in 1986 and started travelling to New York to buy records and it was here he experienced the incredible atmosphere house music was producing. In 1987 Jules premiered on pirate radio station Kiss FM and in 1990 when the station went legal Jules rapidly became one of their top jocks. DJ Magazine voted Judge Jules 8th in the top 150 DJs in the world, the UK's number one club DJ in 1995 and more recently in a Music magazine survey of the most influential people in house music, Jules came second only to the manager of Paul Oakenfold. Agnes Klos talked to Judge Jules ahead of SW4 Festival this year.

Hi Jules, thanks for finding time to answer some questions for the HarderFaster readers. Your last interview for HF was over four years ago, which events have been embedded in your memory over that period of time?

Wow, 4 years has certainly flown by! Without trawling through my diary and taking up all of the Harderfaster.net web space it would be difficult to list them all. For me Judgement Sundays Ibiza has to be the one. I’m very proud of my weekly summer club night still being San Antonio’s busiest club night after 10 years, I get all giddy just talking about it!

Let’s start with an essential question for all clubbers who are new on the scene: What is your story? What was your first contact with music and what made you who you are today?

For me it was a combination of promoting my own parties and building up a local fan base. Getting into Pirate radio also played a big part in my career, being a DJ on the then pirate radio station Kiss 100 really boosted my profile. I think the biggest bit of advice I could give to any young DJ would be to try and tick all the boxes, i.e. making your own records, promoting your own club nights and having a good all round presence as a DJ.

In your opinion what distinguishes your style from any other DJ on the scene? What can people expect when they go out to hear you play?

I like to think that as a DJ and Producer I have quite a distinguished sound that’s kind of trance, yet with groovy undertones at the same time. I get sent around 700 tracks a week- whittling them down to the stuff that works best isn’t an easy task, but it’s something that can never be ignored or avoided.

What are the essential qualities of a DJ who wants to get from ‘good’ to internationally recognisable?

I would say the most essential thing to do is start making your own music. You can put together a home set-up relatively cheaply these days. All you need is a decent computer, speakers, midi keyboard and some quality software, personally I use Logic 8.

Every DJ has a defining moment of their career. So far, what has been yours and why? Also, can you remember the first time you were asked to play?

I remember the first gig I promoted was upstairs in a north London pub, I filled it with mates and family and the journey began! The proudest moment in my career was probably in 1997 when I joined BBC Radio 1.

What have you been up to recently? What exciting things are happening in your life? Perhaps there is something that you are literally dying to share with the rest of the world?
I’ve been in the studio a lot recently and am pleased to say just finished 2 new tracks that you will get to hear very soon. This year has also been taken up by plenty of long haul DJ trips, a couple of which the family have been able to come along too which is always nice!

In the last six months you have played in the USA almost every month. How did it all start? What is the difference between the American and UK clubbing scene? Is it easier to play for the crowd overseas?

Due to the legal drinking age in the US being 21+ it gives people a long time to learn the music they love before experiencing it week-in week-out in a club environment, and the biggest thing I enjoy about playing in the US is how educated the crowd seem to be. In the same breath, the UK is very much THE dance nation of the world.

Where in the world do you enjoy playing the most?

For me Australia has always been really strong, I also really enjoy going to Asia, partly because the food is so damn good!

Apart from DJing you also have your very own Radio 1 show which is full to the brim with the latest tunes. How did you get involved with the radio and what do you like about playing at radio compared with playing in clubs?

Being a Radio presenter and a club DJ are 2 very different things, the thrill of broadcasting to millions is an indescribable buzz! My journey into radio started when I was around 17, joining a couple of very shady underground London pirate radio stations.

If someone asked you about the ultimate destination and the must-at-least-once-experience party before being called a real clubber, what would you say?

Obviously it would be more interesting to come up with a really obscure suggestion, and (for example) I’ve had great times spinning in Macedonia, but in truth it’s all about Ibiza; after all these years it’s still the global home of dance music and the Mecca for all hedonists!

You are playing at SW4 this year alongside such big names as Paul Oakenfold, Armin van Buuren, Pete Tong, Erick Morillo, are you excited? And what do you like about this particular festival?

I can’t wait, playing a festival in your hometown is obviously great, and the atmosphere at SW4 is simply outstanding.

If you had a chance to play back2back with any DJs in the world, who would that be? Could you explain your choice to us?

I would love to play a B2B set with human beatbox genius Beardy Man. I reckon a combination of his pure mouth instrumentation and my beats would be interesting . . . Anyone got his email addy?

Your presence in Ibiza as the promoter of Judgement Sundays at Eden is unparalleled. Your brand has been firmly established as one of the premier nights on the island. Take us to the day when the idea popped in your head and how it was translated into the reality.

It was something I‘d been thinking about for a few years as I was playing weekly for loads of Ibiza clubs such as Cream, El Divino, Pacha etc. I wanted create something fresh in a new and (at the time) uncharted venue. However, it’s far from being just about me - Judgement Sundays revolves around the ten (or so) different DJs playing each week and, of course, the crowd . . .

Under the guise Hi-Gate, your partnership with Paul Masterson has delivered successful production and remixes work for major labels like Virgin, Warner, Universal and Ministry. What do you prefer doing; DJing or producing?

They kind of exist in parallel - there’s nothing better than finishing a tune in the studio at 6pm and playing it out in a club just hours later. The digital age has made this possible, how technology has advanced over the past 10 years!

With such an overwhelming biography, have you got any burning ambitions left to be fulfilled?

I would love to have my own TV show again, watch this space.

What is your secret of being able to juggle your family life, having two children and wife, with the ever-growing career? Any tips?

I spend as much time as I can at home with the family, and they’re a constant grounding reminder never to take myself too seriously. During the summer we relocate to the White Isle and spend Ibiza time together, which is great.

What do you listen to on your iPOD?

I’m a big fan of DAB station Chill FM. My Ipod consists of plenty of Café Del Mar compilations and similar equivalents.

What is your biggest addiction in life?

Music and exercise. Both seem to go together…

Finally, what are your plans for the summer and the rest of 2010? Will we be seeing lots more of you?

Oh yes, a very busy summer ahead. I’m currently sitting on a plane en route to Ibiza for the Judgement Sundays opening party, the gig itinerary is looking very busy, you can check out my dates via www.judgejules.net

Thank you for your time and see you at SW4 on 28th August in London.

I look forward to it, see ya there!

MISSED! With no mud, no camping and no re-mortgage plans needed

festival shop right here in the heart of London.

LOOK WHO'S JOINED THE PARTY...
It’s now less than four months to go until the incredible South West
Four returns to Clapham Common for the seventh consecutive
summer. We have made it our mission to deliver to you the ultimate
electronic line-up and so far we have confirmed some of club lands
most prestigious artists. We feel it is now time to entice you with
another eagerly anticipated announcement for our August Bank Holiday
rave up.

SOUTH WEST FOUR 2010 DAY ONE: SATURDAY 28TH AUGUST
The next instalment of additions to Saturday’s line-up throws up yet
more talking points as we welcome some of dance music’s
heavyweights to Clapham Common. One of dance music’s true icons
Sasha, is no stranger to South West Four. We’re delighted to welcome
him back in 2010 as he continues to prove himself as one of the finest
artists the scene has ever produced. Coming off the back of another
crazy summer residency at Pacha Ibiza, SW4 is delighted to welcome
Erick Morillo for an exclusive London festival performance. One of the
godfathers of UK house music and the voice of BBC Radio 1, Pete Tong
will play on the Saturday of our new SW4 Weekender. Pete has now
been at the forefront of the industry for over 20 years and we
welcome back this ambassador of all things electronic for another
mesmerising performance. Pete will be joined by one of house music’s
most recent success stories, with Laidback Luke playing South West
Four for the very first time. In a year that has seen him produce some
of the biggest tunes to hit our airwaves, Laidback Luke ends a hectic
summer with a trip to South West London.

To add to the credentials of an already impressive Gallery Arena,
we’ve decided to ‘Go Dutch’! Having entered the DJ Mag Top 100 poll
last year at number 10 and 50 respectively, Sander van Doorn and
Marco V are two of the most popular trance acts on the planet. Sander
is currently half way through a major tour of America, whilst Marco
has been working on the next instalment of his V.ISION series.
However, it’s their eagerly anticipated World Exclusive back-to-back
set at SW4 that will get tongues wagging.
