Phil Lankester AKA Libra 9: Its Only A Matter of Time!

When it comes to Psy trance, Phil Lankester, AKA Libra 9, is fast becoming a household name as his reputation for being one of the most technically gifted DJ’s on the circuit with a unique splash of clean and crisps tricks & FX which only he knows how to perform to perfection. Not only does he demand the full attention of the dance floor, his dedication and hard work behind the scenes has not gone unnoticed. From his days of yesteryear as Promoter of Swamp & Co- founder of Magnetix, his current duties as Promoter of Puzzle Project, HarderFaster DJ & Live act of the year 2008 & 2009, gigs at Antiworld, Hommega & Party Proactive, a booking for this years Sunrise Celebration, there seems no stopping this man in his rise to the top with all his hard work being rewarded with his residency for Halcyon @ London super Club, Matter @ The 02.
We took a few moments to talk to the man himself to find out more about this exciting chapter in a prospering career.
Hi Phil, thank you for joining us, how are you?
I’m really good, things are getting increasingly busy, it’s relentless, but I love it. Keeps me off the streets I suppose!
2009 was some what of a big year for you which was rewarded with you being made resident for Halycon at London super club, Matter. Can you tell us how the opportunity came about and how pleased when that call came in?
It was one of those moments, where I’ll always know where I was and what I was doing… I was called out for my day job in Milton Keynes and a phone call later from Paul Jack asking if I’d be up for playing Hommega last August. Well, I couldn’t say no, so here I am, now a resident for the very successful Halcyon.
As with any residency, we understand your involvement with Halcyon expands beyond the decks, can you let us know a little bit about the work you put in behind the scenes?
I help out with the IT side of things at Halcyon and Proactive Presents, at the moment, I’m currently working on a project with Paul, nothing spectacular, but it takes that burden from him and allows him to deal with everything Halcyon. This industry is so competitive and in today’s world, the hard work just doesn’t stop at being a DJ because no matter how talented you or others may think you are, in order to fulfill your ambitions, you have to be willing to work hard behind the scenes.
Any DJ which plays out on a regular basis will hold a burning desire to play at a super club such as Matter @ The 02. Can you tell us what the experience was like for you personally and how it felt when you looked up to see a dance floor packed full of clubbers under your influence at such a prestigious venue?
It was probably the most enjoyable part of my career playing at Matter. I can’t explain what it felt like, but I can say that even the last time I played, it was just as good, if not, even better than the first. Looking up and seeing a busy dance floor with a smile on their face is what being a performer is all about but looking up and seeing that smile, and then realising you are you are playing at one of the biggest, if not the biggest venue in the country, certainly adds that little extra.
Matter as a venue always seems to raise questions over the atmosphere with a lot of clubbers being put off by its commercial appeal for “tourist clubbers”. Can you give us your opinion on this and give us a run through of the vibe of Halcyon?
I personally thought that the vibe of Halcyon was simply amazing, didn’t hear of any trouble, didn’t see any bad reports, everyone I went with thoroughly enjoyed the night, and many that I spoke to said that it was the best event of ’09.
Looking ahead for the next Halcyon in March, you will be performing a back 2 back with Andi Leppard. Can you give as a teaser of what we can expect from the two of you?
This will be the first time that Andi & myself will be playing back 2 back, we both know what each other play, so we’re coming up with a set which will compliment each other, neither of us pre-plan sets, but we will have a few ideas to throw into our set to keep things interesting and the dance floor on their toes that for sure!
The night also holds a line up which includes the likes of Dejavoo, Hallucinogen Live Shpongle DJ set & Liquid Ross. Who are you looking forward to seeing the most from a clubbers point of view?
Dejavoo were my highlight of November’s Halcyon, so I would have to say them. But I am equally looking forward to seeing Hallucinogen, Shpongle, Eat Static, Ticon… you get the idea, the next line up is surely a clubbers wet dream….
Finally, in preparation for the forthcoming event, you have mixed the Halcyon Demo, can you give us an idea of what we can expect from the mix?
A few twist & turns, all encased around a Full-on 80 Minute Psychedelic mix.
We’ll that wraps things up for us, thank you taking the time out to speak with us and I will see you on the dance floor, March the 12th @ Matter!

HALCYON
Fri 12th March 2010
Matter, The O2 Peninsula Square, London, SE10 0DY,
10pm - 7am
Now that’s what you call a party! Halcyon in only 2 events has achieved what it would normally take years to do….we sold out in advance and delivered a party that is going to be talked about for a long time to come! The atmosphere, the design, the energy, the music was simply out of this world!!
It’s hard to follow on from something like that and it’s our determination to showcase the best and drive this event forward in 2010.
For our first showcase event of 2010 we are extremely proud to present…
Hallucinogen Live
Shpongle DJ set
Simon Posford is Hallucinogen and one half of mega psy band Shpongle. He is the twisted lone deranger that warped a generation. To be honest he needs no introduction, he's been ravaging dance floors and opening minds for years. He has two studio albums under this name but countless other equally brilliant releases on Twisted Records. This man is probably responsible for over half of the best psychedelic releases ever. Hallucinogen's debut album 'twisted', released in 1995, set the standard for the then burgeoning trance scene, showing him to be a true pioneer and master of his art.
And that’s not all…we will be announcing further very special headline artists to what is already a very exciting event.
Our main room acts are supported by our team of Halcyon residents: Dejavoo Live, Phil Lankester and Liquid Ross.
Halcyon will also be the stage to launch the 2nd artist album from residents Dejavoo.. “DEJAVOO....THE REMIXES” coming out on Transient Records.
