All Stand For The Viceroy!

The Viceroy aka Tom Godwin is a rapidly rising star in clubland; one half of the hugely successful Vaccine promotion, Tom is also promoter and resident of one of the UK's biggest club nights, The Gallery. In the run up to their biggest New Year’s Eve party yet, which will feature the likes of Sander van Doorn, Tall Paul, Judge Jules and Matt Hardwick, we chat to The Gallery's man in the know to find out what's in store!
Hi Tom! Thanks for taking the time to speak to us, how are you and how are thing’s going over The Gallery at the moment?
My pleasure. I am well thanks, just sat about to watch the X Factor final after another quality weekend which started with The Gallery Xmas Party part 1 on Friday.
When did your involvement with The Gallery all begin?
It all began when I moved to London for university and I started going to The Gallery regularly at Turnmills. I started helping out on a Friday night doing the mailing list and membership and then got my break helping Ben Beaton run a Thursday night trance party called Vaccine at Turnmills which eventually caught the eye of Danny Newman who asked us to become part of The Gallery.
Describe a typical day in the life of The Viceroy!
It’s always quite varied but I - along with Gavyn Mytchel - am responsible for the day to day running of The Gallery so everything from booking line ups, marketing, sorting out adverts and flyers as well as meetings at Ministry of Sound. For example, tomorrow I will be between two offices sorting out final bits and pieces for this week’s Xmas party and the last part of our New Year’s Eve campaign as well as recording my radio show for this week. There’s never a dull day!
When you were first starting out, Judge Jules famously asked you to stand in for a DJ at Heaven, how did you react? How much did this affect your career?
God yeah that was crazy, it was for a Judgement Sunday event when Marco V was running late from Gatecrasher up north. What an amazing main room that club has! Don’t know how much it affected my career but it certainly remains a personal highlight!!
NYE at The Gallery looks set to be another huge event this year! What will you be planning for your set and who else on the line up are you excited about hearing?
I am taking up the reigns of the all important closing set straight after Judge Jules so will be packing a whole host of Gallery anthems plus a load of massive tracks from down the year – it’s been quite a year tunage-wise so there’s a whole host to choose from. The line-up is a cracker too, I can’t wait to have Sander back at The Gallery, he always delivers in that main room on that system so I’m sure it will be a corker of a set. Simon Patterson always does the damage as well.
The midnight track on NYE is to be chosen by The Gallery revellers through a vote on The Gallery website: http://www.thegallery-club.co.uk/nye/. For you, what ultimate Gallery anthem is guaranteed to get the party started?
Push – The Legacy, don’t get me started on just how good this record is. Truly biblical!
Over the years there must have been some weird and wonderful goings on at The Gallery, any funny moments stick out?
Someone once worked out with me that I have missed something like five Gallery’s in nearly five years so I have seen all sorts. Funny moments that are repeatable in this interview are very few I’m afraid. I have to say the dancer who was full frontal in the nude, Paul van Dyk and I walked in on her, has to be up there however! Also the lift at Turnmills, filled with someone, some ice cubes and an A List DJ, then walking in on them – say no more!
As the end of the decade draws to a close, how do you think clubbing will evolve in the next 10 years? Do you feel there are many unexplored avenues with regard to clubbing experiences and do you think clubbing culture still has a long way to go?
God knows, it always changes and shifts and morphs – this New Year’s Eve for example seems to be the busiest in terms of big nights and line-ups in the UK for quite some time. I think there must be new avenues for promoters to explore and I’m sure some old ones will be re-explored as people’s desire to go out and have a good night does not change and electronic music provides the perfect soundtrack for exactly that. After all, dancing and good times is what it’s all about.
How are things looking on the production front at the moment?
Really good thanks, my remix of Ricky Fobis – No Regular has been played on Radio 1 and supported by Jules of late and I have just remixed Gavyn Mytchel’s track Panzer which is forthcoming on Vaccine Records. I also have another track Blackrod scheduled for release in early 2010.
What are your current top 5 tracks?
Faithless –Sun to Me (Alex MORPH remix)
Tristan De Cunha – Passing Judgement
Ferry Corsten – Shelter Me (Rafael Frost remix)
Kay D Smith – Hopolloi (Mark Sherry remix)
Gavyn Mytchel – Panzer (The Viceroy remix)
Have you ever cleared a dance floor / or witnessed another DJ doing so? If so can you remember the offending tune?
Have to say, I have been fortunate and not had that experience, once saw a DJ at the Fridge in Brixton start with a remix of Bubbles Radio Killed The Radio Star - that didn’t go down too well.
To date, what has been the best set you have ever played at The Gallery?
One of my best sets ever has to be the closing party at Turnmills in the magical T3 / Juno room but recently my set at last year’s New Year’s Eve party after Above and Beyond, I just loved it and I’m sure this years New Year’s Eve will be equally as good.
How have The Gallery nights been affected by the current economic climate?
We have been very fortunate to have had a really busy year, week on week we have had a fantastic crowd not just of Gallery regulars and members who form the backbone of what we do but also a whole load of new clubbers experiencing The Gallery for the first time. I do genuinely think we offer a different experience to that of say a Saturday at Ministry and have brought that Gallery vibe to the Ministry of Sound.
Have you made any New Year resolutions?
No not got round to that yet, don’t want to set myself up for a fall!
Looking forward to 2010, what can we expect from The Gallery? Any big names making an appearance?
You can expect the usual Gallery madness, commitment to new talent and good music. We are 15 years old next year so we are planning some pretty big celebrations as well as planning ahead for the next 15 years, its going to be a pretty important year all round and I cannot wait for it! We re-launch on the 22nd January with a massive one – Markus Schulz and Marcel Woods among others. The club is having a bit of a refurb in January as well with some wicked surprises so we can’t wait to be the first club night to be showing them off.. It’s all about Excellence in the Art of Sound. Make sure you get your tickets for The Gallery’s New Year’s Eve Spectacular!
