Academy lessons with Klubfiller

With one of the biggest showcases for hard house just round the corner, we thought it was high time you got in on the action. Klubfiller, pioneering DJ, producer and all round good egg, took a break from his hectic schedule to give us an insight into what he’s all about and what we can expect from the biggest hard house head as he joins the stars on London’s colossal main stage at Brixton Academy!
Klubfiller will be playing a main room set with MDA & Spherical at the worlds greatest hard dance show on Saturday 17th October 2009 for Hard House Academy’s 9th Birthday. Expect mashups, crazy beats and a liberal dose of fun, plus three more rooms top notch tough action!
What was the first club you went to?
The first club I ever went too, was one in Liverpool back in the day called the 051, I used to go every Saturday with all my mates from school. The first ever proper hard dance event I ever went to was the first ever AWsum show in London, which was an amazing experience, apart from having to buy drink tokens in bulk this was new to me!
How long have you been DJing?
I got my first set of decks around the age of 12, Numark TT100’s I think they were, with a Gemini mixer. It’s crazy to think how technology has changed so quickly with CDJs as industry standard now and the ever growing Abelton Live being used for sets too. But to answer the question it’s near enough nine years since I first got on the decks.
When did you last go to the Cinema and what did you see?
Last time I went to the pictures was a couple of months back with Andy Whitby and Cally Gage to see The Hangover, very funny film.
Playstation 3 or XBox?
Playstation 3!
Did you have any formal training to become a studio engineer?
No I taught myself really, although I did a HND course in Music Production but this was after I started to appear on albums and was more to learn about recording bands and learning music industry stuff.
What hard dance track would you most like to remix?
Good question, I really like remixing tracks from other genre’s and putting a hard dance twist on them. One track at present being John O’Callaghan – Find Yourself, I really like the vocal on it.
Saying that though only last week I remixed one of my favourite hard dance tracks with Andy Whitby for Riot, BK – Playing With Knives 2009. You will be hearing this at Hard House Academy!
What track never leaves your box?
There are a few to be honest, but if I had to pick one it would have to be one of the first productions I ever made with Andy and that is a big mash up we made of all the old Prodigy tracks. It never fails, and always gets a big reaction.
I’ve heard you can drink Andy Whitby under the table, but can you beat Cally Gage?
Yes this is true I can drink Andy under the table, Cally on the other hand can give me a run for my money; but the difference being Cally knows when to stop, where as I just make a fool of myself.
This is your second time at HHA. What does HHA mean to you?
I remember seeing videos on Youtube of HHA and being totally blown away by it. With it also being held at one of the most famous venues in the UK, it just makes it that bit more special - it’s a true honour to be playing in the main room.
We are coming for Dinner. What is on the menu?
A bit of notice would have been nice, I better get tidying up! Dinner I’m not the best at, I’ll be honest with you, but I can cook a mean English breakfast in the morning.
I’ve heard you are going to be making some hardcore with the legend that is Gammer? Any dates booked?
I have always loved my hardcore and had a little go here and there with it, but never properly focused on it. Ever since working with Mr Gammer aka Matt Lee on hard dance material, it has inspired me to focus on it a bit more plus it’s too good a opportunity to work alongside the current Worlds Number 1 Hardcore DJ. Nothing is booked in as of yet but it will be sorted very shortly.
What has been your best gig this year?
Now that is a tough question!
There have been so many shows, with the AWsum tour up and down the country plus the Frantic shows. But there are two that stick out with me.
AWsum Remixed at Hidden where I played a bounce classics set, the atmosphere was just crazy that night. More Recently AWsum vs. Bionic, I never played at Bionic before and I have to say the Welsh know how to party!
Any plans yet for NYE?
Well there are two sets on NYE lined up at present, the main one I’m so happy about is a midnight slot at the famous Fantazia at Fantasy Island in the Bounce Heaven arena. The promoters have told me that they want to see the New Year in with some hard dance so I was made up to be asked.
The second event is still under wraps at present but will be in the North West, more info to come very soon.
You are a key part of the AWsum Team. Are you looking forward to playing in the AWsum Arenas at Westfest and Atomik? Have you been before?
YES!
Westfest I just cannot wait for especially after how good Tranz-mission was earlier this year. I have seen the pictures and videos of previous events and it looks unreal. Plus playing in the AWsum vs Frantic arena makes it that even bit better.
Atomik will be special for me, as all I hear about is weekenders this and weekenders that. Sadly to say I have never been to a weekender. So I can’t bloody wait for this one.
What is your next release?
There are so many tracks sitting there at the moment there is a bit of a back log of releases, due to a new album that I have mixed for Bounce Heaven which will be out in all good retailers in October. But you can keep up to date with all the latest releases on the Defiance Recordings website http://www.defiancerecordings.com
