A Spoonful Of Sugar Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 29-07-09 13:40 Quickly becoming one of the most sought after female trance DJs, Sophie Sugar has been making a big name for herself, with backings from the highest echelons of the trance world. It’s an exciting time to be Sophie, so HarderFaster went to find out just how sweet the Sugar is. Having begun her musical career by collecting records well before most people had learnt their 12 times table, it was the winning of the Gallery DJ Mag competition in 2004 that launched her onto an unsuspecting world. Since then she’s gone on to release a number of successful tracks and received mentions from Paul van Dyk and Armin van Burren. Gigs around the world soon followed with more plaudits not far behind. 2009 is also looking to be another exciting year with releases on Armada, a new radio show and more. Your career has really taken off since winning the Gallery DJ comp. How hard was it getting through each of the different rounds? Yeah thanks - it's been a great few years. It was a case of putting together something a bit different each time, going for it on the night and a bit of luck I think!! You’re now appearing around the world. Do you think winning was the most vital thing about your developing career? Winning the competition was a great thing and definitely a highlight but the most vital thing has definitely been writing and releasing tracks. Now with some choice releases under your belt, your sound is getting heard more and more. What is it about your productions you think that helps to make them stand out? It's hard to be objective about your own tracks sometimes but I guess they've become known for being a certain sound - the big uplifting riffs and emotional melodies! Give us a production tip or trick for a new producer. Firstly, software-wise, I would recommend investing in Logic! If you're making trance you can get some really great lead sounds and pads from some of the built in synths like the ES2 and the channel strip settings. When you're first starting, concentrate on EQing each element of your track properly - make sure you get rid of any unnecessary low frequencies to get a nice, clean mix. There are many new female DJs / Producers coming through now across all genres, yet the Top 100 DJs list still looks resolutely male. What do you think can be done to change that? I don't think that it needs to be changed as such. There are still lots more male DJs out there so naturally the top 100 is going to reflect this. If more females break through, the top 100 will naturally evolve with this. You have your new show “Symphony” coming up in August on Di.FM. What new ideas and sounds do you hope to bring to the airwaves? The show will be all about uplifting, emotional music and beautiful melodies. Mostly trance but if I hear a really moving track from a band (things like Sigur Ros for example) or a film soundtrack, or an amazing piece of classical music I'll feature this as well. You started very early on in your life with your music. What was the best thing for you about learning the piano and what was the hardest? The best thing was the fact that it gave me a really solid grounding for making music later in life and the hardest was probably having to sacrifice my lunch hours to practice scales when I could have been doing far more exciting things with my friends!! You started collecting records at the age of six. Will we ever see some samples from what must be some forgotten gems? It's a definite possibility although there are a few choice records better forgotten! But I do also have a few cool ideas floating around and one in particular that I'm working on at the mo so watch this space! Why did you get into music at such a young age? Did you have a musical family or was it something spontaneous? My mum is very musical and would always be playing music when I was younger which was definitely an influence. She has really diverse taste and loves everything from classical music to Van Morrison to Michael Jackson. But I also remember just loving music from a really young age! Top of The Pops was my favourite programme when I was four years old and I used to love watching films like like ET and Star Wars just to hear the music. Do you think it is important for a top producer to have a good background in musical theory and why? Obviously it's always going to be helpful - but I do also know a lot of producers with no musical background at all that just have a good ear for music and still manage to make great stuff. With support and comments from some of the top names in music where do you see yourself going from here? I just want to keep doing my thing and moving forward! If I can keep making and playing music forevermore I'll be a very happy girl!
