Is Rob Tissera The Happiest Guy In Dance?

With a grin that would shame the bluest of cheeses, without a doubt it can be said that Rob Tissera looks like he enjoys his job. And why shouldn’t he, with a string of catchy hits behind him and crowds flocking to see him, his career goes from strength to strength. So do you love him for his hard trance or house or even both? Can’t decide, let us help you.
It’s great to be able to catch up with you, how is 2009 shaping up to be?
It's going great so far thanks. Long may it continue!
You were interviewed in January this year when you said you were currently listening to acid house, is this your genre of choice to listen to? What are you listening to in your car at the moment?
I've got a really broad taste in case you hadn't noticed, haha! My CD player at this moment contains:
- Rodi Styles's latest productions
- Kissdafunk's First Birthday CD
- Basement Jaxx
- The Lab4 disc from Magna Live
- Ministry of Sound Trance Classics
- My Latest Podcast for KDF
When you are playing out, what is your preferred genre?
I'm so fortunate that I get to play at such massive events with two completely different genres. I enjoy both styles equally for very different reasons. I love to play at all the hard events as it releases so many different emotions ranging from gritting your teeth as the sawtooth riffs cut through you to standing there with your hand on your heart whilst telling anyone who'll listen that you love them. I also love to make people jack out to quality house music at our Kissdafunk nights as that style gets people's juices flowing. It can be both sexy and dirty at the same time. It's a lethal combo and it's just how I like it!
Do you prefer the big arena gigs like Magna, or the small intimate venues?
Both have a place in my heart. Magna was easily one of the best gigs I've played at in a long time. Smashing it out to 4000 of your closest friends is hard to beat. Having said that, some of the times I've enjoyed most have been in the smallest of parties where you're trying to find tracks that create a spark with certain people in the room. I get a huge buzz from pleasing people so I'm definitely in the right job!
It was great to see you play at Magna in March. Your set was great – did you have fun?
Not half! I watched some of the set on youtube and I looked like I was having the time of my life. Playing to such an up for it crowd is truly mind blowing. It's the very reason I started DJing!
Your Magna set is released as part of the The Magna Homecoming Tidy Live album which is out now from all good record stores. Can you tell our readers more about the set, what’s included and things we should know when listening to it?
I spent weeks preparing for it as I knew I had to make it fairly flawless as it was being recorded live. The plan was to start with a massive hard trance intro then move through the gears into something filthy then back into an emotional track then back into the darkness for a while and then pull you in even further with some classics and so on.
The most powerful weapon in music is to create a contrast. This is what I love to do as it totally rinses the crowd!
On the night I played on 4 decks and used FX to add extra depth to what I could create. I also re-edited every track in Ableton prior to the gig so you can't buy these versions anywhere else!
You also feature on the Love Tidy album with a couple of your new tracks, want to tell me more about those?
Freefallin' is a vocal led hard trancer with one of my favourite producers, Technikal. It's easily one of my personal favourites amongst all the tunes I've been involved in. Mesmerised by Paul Maddox was one of my favourite tracks from last year so I asked to remix it. I'm really pleased with what I did with Technikal to it and Raise Your Hands is just a bit of fun really.
What else is planned in the World of Rob Tissera?
Absolutely loads of exciting things! I have been working with Apple to create some cool music apps for the iPhone. I'm also working on a new EP for Tidy. In the near future I'll be collaborating with Lisa Lashes, MDA & Spherical, BK, Rodi Style and the Tidy DJs.
I've just done a house version of Faithless – We Come One, which CR2 have signed. This is getting played by Sebastian Ingrosso and Erick Morillo as well as getting heavy rotation on the radio. I'm playing at Creamfields which will be awesome. I'll be in Ibiza most of the summer with Judgement Sundays playing both hard and KDF sets. Also top secret new is that we're also moving Kissdafunk to the 02 academy in Leeds!
How do you see the hard dance scene shaping out in 2009? A lot of people are talking of a revival of the genre, what’s your views on this?
I still absolutely love hard dance and so far it's been a great year, I'm seeing a lot of new faces coming to the gigs so I have very positive feelings for the future. As long as DJs and producers keep pushing the boundaries, I am certain that hard dance will go from strength to strength!
You have a massive fan base, have you any that have overstepped the mark to become obsessive?
Maybe a couple of times but I love to make people happy so it's ace to speak to as many people as possible. As I said before I'm a lucky person and I never ever forget who put me there!
We thank you Rob!
