Kevin Energy Talks Hard Nation

Reported by Gordy / Submitted 12-11-08 21:42

Newly crowned at the Hardcore Heaven 2008 Awards as Best Hard Dance DJ, Kevin Energy, has trotted the world, vinyl in one hand headphones in the other bringing his special form of music to countless clubbers. What better person then to take court and speak about jam, The Nu Energy Collective, The End, 2009 and Christmas cooking tips!

Hi Kevin how is things in the world of Jam and Team Rave Badgers?

Things are awesome thanks. Team Rave is on a high after the success of our past Freeformation party ‘Happily Ever Plastered’ at Hidden. In general the NEC office is running much more smoothly now we finally have our mainframe website www.nuenergycollective.com back by dope demand. This has allowed me to put more effort back into my studio time and I’m loving being able to write again.

The eagerly anticipated NEC site has recently been launched; tell us what we can expect to see from the site?

The site is the main backbone to all our artists and labels. We have now announced a new release schedule for all our labels including new digital three track artists EP’s. The site represents the artists on all levels and incorporates it all into a fun community where users can manage their own profiles and interact with the music and artists. You can expect plenty of new music and DJ mixes with informative features and updates.

You recently won best Hard Dance DJ in the Hardcore Heaven 2008 Awards, was this expected?

If I’m honest, I’ve put so much effort into the launch of the site and have not put as much effort into my DJ sets as I’d like to have done over the last year. I did not expect to pick up an award at all and was completely blown away when they produced the award in the middle of my set! It really is an honour to pick up. I have to offer a huge thanks to anybody that voted for me. I’m offering a free brand new track by myself and SQ and the recording of my set from the night as a thanks: click here to download it!

You played at Frantic’s HHA 8th Birthday with Phil York, how was the event for you?

Well – I was in and out of the event due to being pretty ill! I had planed to make a party of it seeing as it was the only gig I had that night but the plan was foiled by man flu! I still had a great time though. I have worked with Phil a lot so I know we can bounce off each other as we did on the night. We had a good crowd come to support us so all in all it was really good. There were lots of fun people that made an effort with the dress theme.

You’re playing at Frantic and Twist’s Hard Nation Xmas Bosh, what are your best Christmas memories?

I remember being in Australia for Xmas about 6 years ago. I was on tour and I was lucky to be invited to the promoters’ family dinner. It was a massive culture shock indeed. The family were based in South Australia and housed a typical Ozzie festive day. The Dad of the family sweated over the BBQ which had Crocodile, Shrimps, steak and allsorts. The Mum worked hard on every other dish you can think of. Then of course all the rest of the family (loads of them) all sat outside in the sunshine drinking as much as possible.

This will be one of the last ever hard dance events at The End, do you have any memorable experiences of this legendary club?

You know what – it’s a sad fact that I’ve only been there once which was when I played for the previous Hard Nation! I’m usually out and about doing my gigs when other nights are on there.

What sort of set can we expect from you on the night?

I plan to bring out something special for this event. I’m going to work on some more gritty productions – less hands in the air and more down right stomping. I got the feel that the gritty vibe was being soaked up more at the previous one so I will bring that knowledge into this set and be more prepared to cause carnage.

You have played some great events in the UK in 2008, what have been your highlights?

It’s been another huge year but some stand out moments for me are: The NEC PA at Global Gathering – the sunshine was out and the crowd were spot on. HTID back to back with Gammer at the Custard Factory – this was an eagerly awaited set for both myself and the crowd.

You have also played overseas a lot this year including Canada, USA, Spain and Japan, any funny tour stories to tell?

There’s always a funny story but what happen on tour stays on tour as a rule. Still – I’ll say that in Ibiza I had to be carried back to my room one morning – you were there Gordy so you know the details! I won’t divulge in them in an interview though! I had an interesting experience in LA recently which lead to going from a rooftop open air club to a Hollywood strip club!

Who are your favourite hard dance producers?

At present I’m digging Technikal, MDA & Spherical and Paul Glazby as well as getting back into some of the harder European material.

Any fast-rising hard dance stars from the Nu Energy Collective we should watch out for in 2009?

I’m loving recent productions from both Hoopz and SQ. SQ is also doing some great live PA performances.

What are your plans for 2009 - hard dance-wise?

I plan to spend much more time in the studio creating more of a carved sound to offer in my DJ sets. I find myself looking for a stand out sound that’s rarely making it into tracks! More harder edged basslines, pacey percussion, elevating synths all wrapped up with more of a modern gelling together. I can hear some cool ideas in my head that I’d like to put down to beats so I can test them on crowds.

I hear you’re a demon in the kitchen, any Christmas cooking tips for the Harder Faster crew?

A demon hey! That’s a new one! I like it! Kev’s Christmas Cooking Tips to the HF crew this year would be to start the cooking early on Xmas day by opening a bottle of Brandy by your bedside. Once warmed through take a walk to the bathroom where you should brush your teeth with Egg-nog. When clean take a walk to the lounge where you should ponder your recipe with a nice cold beer. Nothing starts the day better. Now you should be feeling pretty hyped for the food preparation? Oh not quite – well I recommend a nice sambuca to get the constructive juices flowing. You get the idea yet? Basically try and avoid the cooking and get pissed.

Where else can we catch you over the festive period?

New Years Eve I’ll be in Birmingham at the NEC representing HTID and Hardcore Heaven as well as playing in London for Glow Ball and Twist’s Zero Nine.
On Saturday 20th December I have a gig in Plymouth. Then finally I’ll be rocking The End for Hard Nation on Sunday 14th December of course.

What’s on your Christmas wish list this year?

You know what, this year I’m cleansing all my belongings so I’m not looking for material things. What I’d like is a few evenings around my friends and family – some laughs and some bloody good times.

Thanks Kevin and we’re looking forward to you rocking The End on Sunday 14th December for Frantic & Twist’s Hard Nation:
