A Brave new world approaches with one half of Bodyrox, Nick Bridges.

Reported by Greg Zizique / Submitted 24-11-08 12:41

Most famous for “that” electro monster Yeah Yeah as Bodyrox with Jon Pearn which became the huge international club anthem and received a nomination for an Ivor Novello plus a DJ career spanning years, its fair to say Nick Bridges has been nothing short of prolific as one of the UK’s strongest house talents.

Recent further success has continued with What Planet Your On and the new hotly tipped Brave New World as Bodyrox. Harderfaster caught up with Nick for an insight into the past, present and future on all aspects of his career both DJing around the world and in the studio.

Hi Nick, how has 2008 treated you?

2008 has been great thanks. I've just come back from Australia and Brazil which were amazing.

How did the partnership with Jon Pearn as the Bodyrox alias come about? Was it planned?

I met Jon in Ibiza when I was playing at Pacha about 5 years ago. We spoke about doing a track together and went into the studio about a year later. The original name for 'Yeah Yeah' was Bodyrox but as the track came together we decided to call ourselves Bodyrox instead.

The success of Yeah Yeah clearly has pushed your studio skills into a mass limelight. With a fresh discography of material on independent labels since, how do you think that you have managed to gain the commercial success whilst maintaining a credible name?

There is a massive stigma attached with chart success for some reason. In my opinion crossing a record over means that a huge proportion of people like what you're doing which can only be a good thing. Everyone who has followed my career knows that I have grown up in the underground though so it hasn't really effected me that much.

With a full DJ diary, how did you cut your teeth DJing, it’s clearly not an overnight success story?

I was the tour resident for Ministry of Sound for about 5 years and then club resident for Ministry of Sound London for 2 years before Bodyrox blew up. I was also resident for DTPM at Fabric for 3 years at the same time so I had been playing at some of the best clubs in the World for years before the success of Bodyrox.

Where have you played that’s had the most electric atmosphere?

I played for Cream at Amnesia Ibiza throughout last summer which was incredible.

Which side of the decks to you prefer to be on, or do see things from both the clubbers and DJs perspective?

I rarely have time to go to clubs unless I'm playing at them. You have to know how music sounds from the other side off the decks though to be able to produce it successfully.

What format are you using DJing, has the digital world changed your style/technique? What are your thoughts on applications such as Ableton?

I use Serato to play live as well as CDJ's. I use Ableton a lot for mixes and edits but not to play live.

I’m sure you’ve noticed the dance scene has had some fairly large changes, DJing internationally how do you feel the UK compares to the rest of the world right now?

The UK is still one of the best countries for clubbing. UK clubbers are very passionate about the music as they are throughout most of Europe. For me, Australia is great as is South America.

How would you describe your production sound, and where do you dig deep to find influences that shape the direction and inspiration of your new tracks?

I produce more techno than electro myself. Bodyrox is more electro I guess. We find inspiration in everything really. I wouldn't dare show you what I have on my iPod!

What other projects are in the pipeline for you in the near future, anymore interesting collaborations?

Other than the Bodyrox album, I'm working with a few producers on collaborations right now. You can get the latest news on www.myspace.com/djnickbridges

All this studio time and DJing must keep you very busy, what does the average week in the life of Nick Bridges entail?

Unfortunately, both studios I use are 2 hours away so I spend a lot of time on the road. Studio Monday to Friday and then DJing every weekend which usually involved sitting around in airports. Not that glam!

For the tech heads out there, what do you use in the studio? All software based or a mixture including hardware?

We hardly use any hardware now. Most plugins are so good now there is no need for hardware. We use a desk for recording vocals though to get a warmer sound.

What DJ/Producers are currently inspiring you at present, any tips for the top?

There are a lot of young up-and-coming producers. I think you'll be hearing a lot more from Daley Padley and NiCe7 in 2009.

Some random questions…

What’s your favourite type of cheese and why?

I don't eat cheese - it makes you fat.

Favourite television show?

Fonejacker

Who out of the following would you work with, Madonna, Christina or Britney - and why?

Christina - she's amazing.

Thanks for all your time Nick and I look forward to the next CD promo to see what you’ve come up with!
