Feeling AWfully Frisky!

Hot Welsh talent Frisky is playing in Arena 2 at the huge showdown between Awsum and Kiddfectious at Ministry of Sound on Bank Holiday Sunday May 25th.
With gigs all over the country lined up for the next few months and international appearances scheduled for Amsterdam and Spain in the summer, we caught up with her to see how she’s coping with all this fame at such a young age!
Hello Frisky, how are you? Let’s start with an easy one, sum up in 10 words how excited you are about the AvK event in May!
Well hello there Sue! I am great thank you!
I’ve just got three words for you, Ministry of Sound! (that’s 10 words as well – how clever!)
How long have you been DJing in clubs? And did it take you a long time to get to a stage where you were confident enough to play out?
My first ever set out in a club was just before my 17th Birthday. It didn’t take long for me to get the confidence to play out in a club but I still get nervous now just before I go on the decks. As soon as that first mix is out of the way though the nerves disappear!
You’re still only young yet you’ve played at big festivals and were DJing in Ibiza last summer! How do you keep your feet on the ground?
I have been really lucky to play at some amazing events at such a young age, and every weekend is such an excitement! However, it’s a giant thud back down to earth on a Monday morning when I have to wake up early to go to my office job! My first experiences of the dance music scene were as a clubber and I still love a good party so I like to keep my feet on the ground and ‘keep it real’ as they say! I don’t think many people like DJs who are unapproachable and seem full of themselves, it’s a real turnoff in my eyes.
Now tell us a bit more about Ibiza, how was it for you? Any plans to return?
It was my first ever trip to Ibiza last summer so getting to DJ at the same time was amazing. I played about 4 or 5 gigs including one gig at Manumission in their famous ‘toilets’! And in case you are wondering, yes it actually was in the toilets! If you haven’t seen the photos it was quite a surreal experience with people dancing on the sinks and all sorts! That was definitely an experience I will not be forgetting in a hurry!
Ibiza really is something else! I am returning at least twice this year with a number of gigs lined up already including gigs for Frantic for the Ibizan Heat week. I am also playing at Eden and Charlyz Angels later on in the season.
You have a run of gigs lined up for Hardcore Til I Die in the Sun this summer – give us more info!
This is the week before I go to Ibiza, I have two gigs throughout the week, one solo and one back to back with the lady herself, Miss Cally Gage. Again, another event I can’t wait to play for! The Hardcore crowd are so mental I love it! With all the people who are going to be in Lloret De Mar for this I think there will definitely be some serious partying going on too!
And what’s this about you playing for the Amsterdam festival Defqon 1 on the hard trance Stage?
I think it is safe to say this is going to be the highlight of my DJ career so far! Basically Linda from Q Dance saw me playing at Concept in Ireland when she was over with Zany some time last year. A month or so later she had enquired to see if I was available for the event. I was so shocked I didn’t want to get my hopes up but when the gig was confirmed I was absolutely ecstatic!
This event has been nominated for festival for the year a number of times and sells out within hours of the tickets going on sale! It was always a goal of mine to play for one of their events and I think Defqon is a good place to start! I also have another gig confirmed with them later on in the year but you’ll have to wait and see which one it is!
I heard a rumour that you were shortlisted to be on Celebrity Big Brother Hijack, what did you have to do & what was it like?
Again, this was a really surreal experience! I was contacted by E4 last October and asked if I would fill in an application for the programme (in case you didn’t know this year it was all about 18-21yr olds with a specific talent).
They actually found me through my MySpace. After being asked to attend an interview in London, I was then shortlisted and asked to go into the house for a ‘trial run’ of the show a week before Christmas (they were also still unsure of who their final housemates would be).
It was exactly like the real thing, no TV’s, watches, phones or contact with the outside world. We had to perform tasks set by the celebrities including a football game with binoculars on the wrong way around!
The best task was set by Neil and Christine Hamilton, it was the last day where I was paired up with a comedian (Chris Ramsey – he’s gonna be huge!), I had to learn ‘Three Blind Mice’ on the violin in 60 mins and he had to sing along. We performed on stage and I was not allowed to get more than 5 notes wrong. The second part of the task was to go to the diary room where there were 3 pairs of champagne glasses and we had to guess their cost, lowest to highest. We got them all right and won the overall task so it was a great last night!
Jay, who actually got on to the show was one of my fellow housemates. Although I loved the experience I don’t know if I could have handled being in there for longer than 4 days!
Ok, now let’s get to the nitty gritty! Who’s your money going to be on in the biggest hard dance showdown ever to take place - Andy or Alex – and why?
Well they both have their own thing going on which is great, but between the two my loyalty has to lie with the harder sound so my money is on Alex. He has contributed to pushing the harder sound here in the UK along with the likes of Mark EG, Cally & Juice, Organ Donors and Kutski and I think it is finally getting the recognition it deserves across the country rather it just being popular in small areas.
Do you think the boys will fight fair or will there be bribe taking and dodgy dealings?
Haha, I am sure they will both be playing it fair and digging out the big guns for this one!
Which DJs are you looking forward to seeing at AvK?
There are too many to mention to be honest although I will be making an effort to see Luna as I am yet to see him play. Otherwise I will be hopping rooms and seeing who takes my fancy throughout the night!
You’ve been known to wear quite different outfits to other female DJs – what kind of war outfit do you have planned for AvK?
Haha! I grew up listening to heavy metal and was a bit of a goth when I was younger. I still love my rock music so I incorporate some of this into my outfits. I haven’t really thought about what I will be wearing to the event but as usual something that is way too uncomfortable and that my parents would be shocked by!
Who would you like to go up against in a hard house head to head or showdown?
A tough question but I would probably say Cally & Juice, the Welsh boys vs the Welsh girl – the ultimate battle! Haha! I have learnt a lot from this pair over the years and think a head to head would be wicked fun!
Some of the DJs have had their own showdowns ahead of the grand final and have sent us the videos to go on the AvK Youtube channel, fancy getting involved? Make a video with another DJ and send it to us!
Definitely, I have an idea up my sleeve but you’ll have to wait and see!!!
Thank you very much Frisky! Make sure you catch fantastic Frisky going up against other Frantic faves in The Bar at Ministry on 25th May. She’s hot on & off the decks – not one to be missed.
