The Genius Of Genix

The fresh and exciting 'nu-trance' sound of Genix has been taking over the CD wallets of the worlds biggest DJs for quite some time now, with massive releases on Spinnin, Maelstrom, Armada as well as Ministry of Sound’s Data Records. He continues to stand out from the pack with his innovative approach and the last few months have seen his remixes come thick and fast for even more of the elite labels.
As a DJ, he is on a rapid rise, after recent support sets for two of the biggest DJs in the world and being appointed resident at one of the countries longest running nights, he has also been on some international adventures of late. 2008 looks set to be his year and to find out some more about the man of the moment, we catch up at his anthem making studio.
So, the last few months seem to have been pretty crazy for you, give us a run-down.
Yeah they sure have! I’ve enjoyed some great gigs alongside Paul Van Dyk and Tiësto already this year and things are looking good on the DJ front. I started my international trips this year with a set in Russia and there are lots to follow. I have also had some great support already with my productions.
What’s been going down in the studio?
Well, it took me a loooooong time to come up with the follow up to last years Phused which got released on Spinnin’s Reset Records. But I’ve got the job done with two new tracks which have already been snapped up. My next track Piranha will come in April time with remixes from Adam Sheridan and Re-Ward. On the remix front I’ve had support from Armin and Eddie already on my take on Agnelli & Nelson’s Just When I Think There’s An Answer track on Solarstones Deep Blue Label. I have also got a more uplifting remix on the way for Vadim Soloviev’s Stay With Me track with had many huge labels trying to sign up! I’ve also got a few other projects, along with some really exciting ones which I have to keep under wraps for now.
How would you best describe your sound, and what/who have been your influences?
Well, last year I took a different approach to my music. For years I was trying to force it out and produce a particular sound, but now I produce what I like. I think this is best as it reflects what you like in music. My sound is a mixture of many genres of dance, my music is not stuck in one genre but could fit in a few. I like big beats, clever percussion sequencing and a big bass driven sound to carry it, also some electro and techno influences. As for influences, there are many! I think Sander Van Doorn has done a very good job in hitting the top, he is a good role model, but there are many who have made me fall in love with music from Chicane, Armin van Burren, Judge Jules to name a few.
Your Discogs of remixes reads like a who’s who in the world of trance. Which track did you most enjoy putting your mark on and who would you like to remix in the future?
My most enjoyable remix was for Markus Schulz and his Fly To Colors track last year. I actually made the remix twice, I wasn’t happy with the first one, I put a lot of effort into the remix and it is still getting hammered everywhere now. There are many people I’d love to remix for! The obvious ones would probably be Armin & SVD.
Do you see yourself as a Producer who DJs, or a DJ who Produces and what came first?
Good question! I think there are many producers who get the chance to DJ at the top level, but can’t cut it. I started my DJing and production at the same time when I was 16 or 17. I get the question asked a lot what do I prefer? Production or DJing, Well they are totally different but when you combine the two it’s one hell of a feeling when you’re dropping your new track to a big crowd! So I am a producer and a DJ.
Tell us a bit about your Passion residency?
Well I was working with JFK for few years on a night, Live & Loud, where I was resident DJ. He then made his big return back to Passion as DJ & Promoter, I was still DJing and helping with some promotion; then he offered me the residency which was a huge honour. Passion launched UK residencies For Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and now I have one so it feels great. The club atmosphere is the best in the UK. Anyone who goes will know what I’m on about. I am now working as co-promoter of Passion alongside JFK as well as being resident DJ.
We also heard a rumour you’re a Guinness World Record holder, what’s that all about?
Yep that’s very true! In 2005 I did a huge DJ set! It lasted 84 hours! My world record DJ set became official and I got in the famous book! I heard that it might have been broken but at the moment I am still the official holder. Congratulations to whoever did it! I won’t be doing it again it was the most physical and mentally draining thing of my life!
You also go under the names Damion Powell, Oracle, Deep Orbit, Outbound, fill us in on how they all differ?
Well a few years ago I started releasing more records under different guises for different sounds. I released some remixes for M.I.K.E and Pulser under the Damion Powell guise last year and I think I have a couple more Outbound tracks on the way, But there will not be so many in the future as I’m going to push my Genix name more.
What set-up do you have in the studio, are you self taught and what advice can you give to budding producers?
My studio consists of the usual kind of set up, mixing desk, monitors. I use a PC and Logic for sequencing, I also use my Access Virus C a lot as it generates some fat sounds. I sold a lot of my hardware synths as I found some VST software was becoming really good and faster to use.
I am self taught, yes. Learnt the lot myself! Lots of time, effort and ambition to get my first tune onto vinyl When I got my first, I didn’t let it go for about a week! I then set myself new goals, I achieved them and set more! It always gives you something to work towards. The best bit of advice I would say to upcoming producers is never lose faith - it’s a very, very, very hard market - and always produce what YOU think is right, don’t try and produce a sound just to get particular DJs to play it.
What’s coming up for Genix over the next few months?
Well I’ve got my new release on Reset Records on the way. I have Passion / Fire It Up with Eddie Halliwell, John O’Callaghan, JFK and more plus dates across the UK at Digital Society and Off The Rails alongside The Thrillseekers, Jon O’Bir, Alex Morph, Lange and some more. Then I’m at the Arches for a Rehab night with Markus Schulz. I also have some remixes coming out as mentioned earlier and look out for my gigs in Ibiza, China, Finland, Russia + More!
