Get Contagious with JP & Jukesy part 1

Reported by Greg Lynn / Submitted 14-01-08 11:00

Don’t just think clothes because that’s not just what they are about. In fact Contagious have been running some very successful stages on the festival circuit for some time now. But after myriad requests, the time has come for the concept to move indoors and into their own venue for the first in a series of Contagious Parties! Well, to help celebrate the move we have over the next two weeks a special two-parter with fast rising stars JP & Jukesy. Come and get infected.

Magnetism: n. The branch of physics concerned with magnetic phenomena.

Well maybe something like that was going on when JP hooked up with Jukesy several years ago when they met through a mutual friend at Sundissential North.

Since the pair forged their bond behind the decks, they've grown to be one major force in the hard dance scene, as well as being one of the most versatile and flexible acts on it. You want a tough, funky warm up to start off your night? They can give you just that. How about some hard and dirty techno? Why no problem. Need a bit of really driving hard house to get the crowd going? JP & Jukesy are yer lads! But there is far more to them than DJing; they've notched up one mightily impressive catalogue of productions, some of which have featured on a number of high profile albums. But, of course, this is the duo who founded Deprivation Records.

So come Friday the 8th February, Contagious Clubwear descends down on the Ice Club in Westbury to help spread the love as they present The Valentines and Heartbreakers Ball and the West Midlands favourite sons will be joining the star studded line up but just how they're going to get everyone's adrenaline glands pumping?

Lads, Contagious look to be serving up one great event but what are you most looking forward to about playing there that night?

JP - The Contagious team always serve up wicked events and we are sure that yet again this will be amazing. The venue looks promising and the lineup is top notch with something for all on it. It's really good to see Contagious branching out from hosting rooms and stages and doing a major event on their own.

Jukesy – For me it’s all about seeing Gordon’s lovely face, he’s so cute ! On a more serious note Contagious always put in loads of extra effort on the production so I know that the club will look amazing, the dancers will look amazing and good old Gordon will look amazing too, it’s always great playing at an event where so much thought and effort goes into the night as a whole and it’s twice as much fun being official Contagious residents for 2008!

Gordon and Claire are intrigued to find out if you're going to be playing your favourite style. bounce house, particularly as you are forever praising that type of music behind the scenes.

JP - Haha, tonight will be a strict policy of quality hard house only, no cheese allowed. The ‘bounce’ sets are now something that we will only be doing once or twice a year. After all you can’t go forwards by going backwards.

Jukesy – What a excellent question, it’s something Gordon and Claire love discussing with me at any opportunity as they love it so much as well. I can’t but help feeling they have very warped minds though. Claire even calls me at 4am in the morning to discuss this topic it’s one that will continue forever.

There’s a big love / hate thing going here, JP hates it until he’s playing it and I just love it although I think it’s really important to stress here it is mainly the older bounce type classics that we love as neither of us are too keen on some of the really cheesy scouse house. As JP mentioned we will only be doing the whole bounce sets on a couple of occasions but we have promised Gordon & Claire we will do one for them as they love it so much!

There is not only hard dance on offer that night, but also, hard trance, electro and hardstyle. What are your views on the wide variety of music there?

JP - There is some really good UK hard trance around at the moment with some of the producers really pushing some wicked new ideas. Technikal and Guyver are good examples, both right at the top of their games. All the tracks these guys pump out are 100% clean, crisp excellent productions. The electro thing is still as strong as ever, some people thought it would die out last year but it's still going strong thanks to some new producers injecting some seriously "wobbly" bass into the fold. As for hardstyle, well let’s just say I would rather eat hot glass than listen to this sort of music, for me its just plain vile. (My humble opinion)

Jukesy – I can appreciate any style of music while not necessarily liking it and think it’s of great importance to have a varied line up so that there is someone or something on for everyone and Contagious have certainly provided a very varied and balanced line up for the 8th Feb. I was born into a era of clubbing when it wasn’t uncommon to have people from Pete Tong to Seb Fontaine to Andy Farley on the line ups and that’s what got me into clubbing in the first place.

Contagious are of course going to have their own dancers performing at the club; so a great show is guaranteed. Would you agree this is something that really has an effect on the crowd in a club, as it gets them all livened up?

JP -Yeah for sure, good dancers go hand in hand with a good event. It shows that the promoter has put effort into the production of the event. For me the crowds always seem to step it up a gear when there are a few dancers leading the way on stage.

Jukesy – Got to agree with JP on that. Contagious Dancers are the best in the business so it’s always a pleasure seeing them at events and we’ve had that pleasure quite a few times in 2007. Contagious have been great advocates for pushing the boundaries forward and none more so than fellow Contagious residents Sam Hudson and the “bongo man” Nick Fisher. Those bongo’s cant help but draw you in and hook you right there and then, whenever I’ve seen them played it’s a bit of pied piper effect. If you haven’t seen him play before now is your chance to check it out.

The last time you played for Contagious was their arena at the last Tidy Weekender (where you played a bounce set) what type of fond memories have you got of that gig?

JP - To be totally honest, I cant really remember much of that set thanks to Gareth the stage manager getting me rather wasted on pints of vodka redbull! I’ve not been so drunk in a long time, in fact I was so drunk later on that night I completely forgot my record bag but luckily it was still behind the stage at 10am Sunday morning when I woke up with a rather painful hangover.

Jukesy – For me it was a bit more memorable haha!. The previous time we played bounce at a weekender was our debut set at TW5 and we would never have guessed the roadblock we caused in arena two that night. So it was great taking it a bit more up close and personal in the 3rd arena and seeing the mayhem caused. For those that got in the atmosphere was electric, those that didn’t still had it large outside the curtains as we ensured it was as loud as possible for them along with a extended cameo appearance on the mic from me. I’ve never seen so many hands shoot up into the air when I asked them to raise them if they thought Gordon was a “£$^&* ! Bless Gordon I don’t think he saw that coming, haha!

One man who has always had a big influence on you both is Andy Farley. What inspiration did you take from the 'Godfather’?

JP - Andy has always been at the top of his game for as long as we can remember. When anybody mentions the words hard house, legend and king in the same sentence it always comes out with the same reply Andy Farley. It’s good to see a DJ constantly pushing new sounds and ideas trying to push the scene forward in the right direction. I would say that’s why he is still such an inspiration to us, he has been around for as long as we can think and have no doubt that he will be around for many years to come.

Jukesy – Andy has achieved some truly fantastic things over the course of his career and one thing that has always shined through is his great personality and just how normal he is. No arrogance, just pure quality and a down to earth mentality. Mix that with his un-human like mixing ability it’s easy to see why he’s been such a good role model for us.

Almost all artists seem to have had funny and unexpected coincidences occurring to them in the course of their careers, which have led to their major breaks. Can you mark one out?

JP - We’ve never really been blessed with really lucky breaks, it’s always been 110% effort and bloody hard work. One of few major breaks we have had definitely came after Tidy Weekender 5 when we absolutely destroyed the weekender, it was the first time we had played a bounce set for a couple of years so it was the most nerve wracking but enjoyable experience we’ve had. Shortly after we got signed to Tidy Management (which then got sold to Most Wanted) and now we are back with S62 DJ management which is a part of Tidy. So it’s never been plain sailing with us, however it is great character building!

In your earlier days, you put a lot of work (and still do) into your own promotion. What did you find were the most effective ways of getting yourselves gigs and generally getting your names out there?

JP - We found that the best way to get the "JP & Jukesy" name out there was to pretty much be at all the events handing out free CDs, stickers etc. We must have handed out in the region of 5000 free CDs over the years in clubs. We both used to be in clubs all weekend before we started playing out so we had some good connections with promoters knowing who we were. Then it’s a case of hitting all the big promoters with as many emails / calls / CDs as we could and pushing for them to give us a chance.

Jukesy – Just to add onto that it was a whole different world when we first started out as it was just after the big boom of hard house so there were plenty of gigs. We’ve always remained fair and approachable throughout our time which I think is why we have continued to so well, 85 gigs in 2007 certainly is no mean feat in this current climate. It’s coming to the time now where we want to fully pass this onto someone else to sort though which will free up a lot more time for our record label and new productions.
