Chewing the Fat with Kid Blue and Unique 3 about the UK's biggest breaks bash @ 070707

Still considered a relatively new genre by many in the music industry, it can be argued that breakbeat has actually been around since the early ’70s, when the early hip hop artists started using breaks in funk and jazz tracks. Breakbeat samples were also a fundamental part of early rave tracks in the early ’90s when the acid house explosion also lead to such subgrenres as breakbeat hardcore — otherwise simply known as rave music to many. When rave went off to form the likes of jungle and drum & bass, breakbeat evolved to form big beat, progressive breaks, nu school breaks and funky breakbeat. More recently, things have taken an electro and psy influenced trip, with psy breaks surely being one of the more cutting edge sub genres at the moment. All these subgenres and more are going to be represented at the Antiworld 070707 Festival, which pretty much features every kind of breakbeat around.
Just why are there so many subgenres of breakbeat? Because one of the joys of breaks is that its varying bpm (beats per minute) makes it a prime candidate to mix with so many different styles of dance music. To illustrate this at 070707, breakbeat veterans Archangel have been brought in on Friday and the End residents Chew the Fat on Saturday to present everything from the more traditional rave sounds to the more avant garde side of things.
The Archangel stage on Friday 6 July covers a huge range of breaks subgenres, partly thanks to a bit of support from the City Breaks boys. They’ve got Hybrid, Breakfastaz, Deekline & Wizard featuring MC Ivory, Subsource (live), Far Too Loud (and yes we’re sure they’ll do their best to live up to their name!), Hoffman vs Model 101, James Zaidi and Jamie Robinson vs Vinny, to name but a few.
Saturday's Chew the Fat line-up continues this celebration of all beats broken with Aussie beatmeisters Pendulum, the Freestylers, man of the moment Merka, Aquasky, Madox and of course head honcho Paul Arnold, who’s put together a who’s who of breakbeat. On top of all this, Beastie Boy Mix Master Mike — certainly one of the legends of hip hop and breaks — will be tearing it up on the Egg stage, so for once at a festival breaks fans actually have a choice between stages.
Two underground breaks heroes spinning on the Chew the Fat stage are Kid Blue and Unique 3. In another HarderFaster first, they open up on how to have a good time at a festival, what to expect from their sets at 070707 as well as sharing some insight on portaloos and the little known act of Elbow Titting. Expect some ass-shaking breaks from the scene’s rising stars.

What is your ‘perfect vision’ of a music festival?
Being overcome by an enormous sense of well being at being part of such a beautiful gathering of human beings, all equal under one sky. Failing that getting wrecked in a field for three days will do.
What are the most essential ingredients for a super summer festival?
Eggs, flour, sugar and water. Oh hang on that’s a cake.

What is your favourite outdoor activity besides festivals?
Dogging.
Describe your funniest music festival memory?
Sending my mate Pete off to the Greenfield at Glastonbury with one walkie-talkie, and then shouting ‘I hate hippies’ down the other one when he got there.
What turns you on in a music festival?
Girls wearing very little clothing.

What is your ‘perfect vision’ of a music festival?
My perfect vision and recurring dream is one where everyone sings the 1971 classic ‘Hillside Singers’ Coca Cola advert tune ‘I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing’ (In Perfect Harmony) whilst holding hands, in a show of Brotherly Love for the very last track of the festival. The fact that the security are rifling through everyone’s tents, at the same time, for drugs and clean underwear is a part of my dream that I’m trying my best to iron out.
What are the most ‘essential ingredients’ for a super summer festival?
Super summer sun, wonderfully wet wipes and mind bendingly magic tea.

Sub Equalised Velocity Enhanced Noise With Over Resonated Digitised Sounds
Name 7 things you will bring with you to 070707.
1. My wife (saves having to search for something to keep you warm in your tent of an evening, later, at the festival).
2. Toothbrush — 3 day old ‘festival underwear’ is nearly acceptable but come on! You’ve just GOTTA keep your mouth clean — Festival Rule number #1!
3. Records because, even though I THINK my beatboxing is good, I’m told it wouldn’t rock a crowd for 90 minutes.
4. A 6am Kit: Prescription pain killers/bottled water/salt & vinegar Square Crisps/can of Coke (well shaken til flat) — mix all ingredients and ingest until your pitiful pleads to God, for a quick death, subside.
5. A mallet — because I refuse to be that laughing stock idiot over in the corner there again, trying furiously to hammer a tent peg into 3 week old baked ground with a pissy, worn Converse shoe.
6. Two flasks of strong black coffee — even cold cups of black coffee can be swapped with other festival revealers for the most amazing things!
7. A car with air-con because the 6am kit works so much better if you’re curled up in the foetal position, on the back seat of your car with the engine running and cold air gushing through your ‘festival underwear’.
What is your favourite outdoor activity besides festivals?
‘Elbow Titting’ — the upcoming sport that is set to take over ‘Park Walling’ as the premier ‘Underground Sport’, practised by an underground few, every Saturday morning on London’s Oxford Street. The rules are simple: one player on each side of the road outside Tottenham Court Road Tube and on the ref’s gun, both players walk against the pedestrian traffic as quick as possible, gaining scores for each female chest they manage to elbow on the way. The most elbow to chest contact by Oxford Circus Tube is the winner.
Describe your funniest music festival memory.
My funniest music festival memory would have to be watching a group of pissed up lads turning a portaloo upside down with their mate still inside. Well, I say funny, it was rank actually ..... I can still hear the screams from within that ill-fated green box and to this day, I don’t eat for 3 days before a festival.
