Guy Garrett tells us the Buzz from Miami

This week one of the most important events on the international dance music calendar takes place, The Winter Music Conference in Miami. Start with a fist full of seminars, throw in plenty of opportunities for networking, generously add some of the worlds best DJs with a sprinkling of up and comings looking to get a break and mix it all together with lashings of party making and you’ve come close to the experience. To celebrate this feast of dancing and deliberation, Guy Garrett from DMC is compiling together the best of Miami for his Buzz Chart show to give you a real taste for what you’ll be hearing over the coming year.
With over 500 production and remix credits to his name and a career spanning over 2 decades working with some of the cream of DJing, producing and promoting talent, Guy is better placed than nearly anyone to get his mitts on the most upfront tracks for his show. Of course with his experience at Kiss 100, Radio 1 and Galaxy you can be assured the show isn’t going to be some patched together mish-mash with a presenter you can barely understand. Instead you can catch up with him via the DMC website and you’ll see he has his finger firmly on dance music’s pulse, with each new show released at DMC Update.
HF: You are rolling together the biggest Miami hits into one show. How important do you think it is for a track to do well here for its subsequent release?
It's the biggest showcase event of the year for new music, what gets played sets the agenda for the year ahead in Ibiza and over the summer and beyond.
Remember Fedde Le Grande 'Put Your Hands Up' got plenty of attention at last years WMC but we had to wait till December for its final release
HF: From what you’ve heard so far, what do you think will do well and why?
Well these are my hot tracks to watch out for featured in my Miami Buzz mix.
Richard Grey ft Marc Almond: Warped Bass (Apollo)
I Got this from Pascha last year, it has a big old school garage vibe with a new 'Tainted Love' vox and it’ll be a sure-fire hit.
D.O.N.S. Vs Inner City: Big Fun (Ministry Of Sound)
A classic track from 19 years ago, remixed and reworked for the crowd, an instant crowd pleaser!
Turbofunk: Gotta Move (Phonetic Recordings)
It sounds like another filtered 80's tune but it's all original, could this be the next Eric Prydz?
Josh Wink: Higher State Of Consciousness (Defected)
As it says on the tin, this will be instant hit with it's world famous acid line.
Claude van Strock: Whistler (Ministry Of Sound)
A very underground cut but the Dirty South remix could make this the next Fedde Le Grande, definitely a No1 for the summer.
Sander Van Doorn: Back By Demand (Spinin Records)
Yes it has the old King Bee sample but SVD rocks the shit out of the dancefloor with his amazing baseline.
HF: What’s more important to dance music, Miami or Ibiza and why?
Miami all the way. I know labels that were rushing round picking up new material before Christmas getting them ready for Miami. Ibiza is a great place for unknown tracks breaking it and getting picked up by the major's ready for the following Miami.
HF: A lot of people wonder if Miami is more about partying and sunning yourself rather than working. What do you think?
It's all about showing your face and networking. There are plenty of parties going on and it's more putting yourself about and meeting new contacts, the work starts when you get back home and chase up on new leads and contacts.
HF: This year the WMC will be centred on new developments in recording and playback technology. What direction do you see the scene going?
As much as everyone goes crazy over software and the latest laptop plug-ins, it's really just about music. OK a few of the big names have the time to work out something special on their Ableton but for all the clubber can see you might as well be surfing Limewire!
HF: How do you think this will change the dance music industry?
The future is positive, rather than selling single records online it will be more about a DJs mix. The way things are going you will be at a club and really loving the DJs set. The set will be recorded and you’ll see text codes appear on screens in the venue. Once you’ve sent your details over you’ll be able to purchase and download the set. Then all you’ll need to do it get home after the club and play that same set you just heard out.
HF: Can you give us any sneak previews on what Technics will be doing over the coming year?
I can't comment at the moment, things are very hush hush from Japan!
(Ed: I did try and get more info out of Guy but for the moment you’ll have to be content with a watch this space I guess!)
HF: It must be great working at DMC. Tell us a little bit more about it?
It can be a crazy job with impossible deadlines, but I love it. So many people think we just do the World Mixing Competition but that's only 10% of the company. Each week is so different; I can be mastering or mixing a Back To Mine or Under The Influence CD comp one week, then be working on a radio show bed or TV performance the next.
Every month I mix and compile the DMC DJ service, that’s 7 new CD's every month, on a Monday, then I’ll compile the Buzz chart and prepare the audio to go online on our website. Next the phone might ring and it’ll be a label needing a mix to promote an album, so I’ll have to reschedule studio time and crack on.
We're working with LG mobile to provide audio and video content for their latest phone systems and of course there’s the DMC comp. With over 3000 entries from round the World, all desperate to be No 1, it takes a hell of a lot to organize every year. Things get nearly impossible on the actual weekend and I always wonder how we manage to pull it off. At any one time we have 32 Technics 1210's on stage to wire and 16 different types of mixer, but then think you have only 3 minute's to rewire a new set for each country and it starts to get scary. On top of that with some of the DJs not speaking English, it gets pretty hard to understand how they want the decks and mixer wired up! It can be a very long 2 days.
HF: House music or turntablism and why?
For me it's house music, since I first started playing records out in the late 80's I knew it was a passion I had to be involved with, I did however start out being the DJ in a hip hop / breakdance troop so again I have a love for the music but couldn't perform the tricks involved with turntablism. The guy's entering the comp every year are amazing to watch knowing they must spend month's and month's working out a 6 minute set, they have amazing talent. However I prefer to go out and listen to a DJ playing great music rather than watching a showman.
HF: Why do you think despite the popularity of house music for industry heads and bars across the world, the top DJ has been a trance DJ for the past few years?
If we're talking DJ Mag top 100 it's down to the very loyal following of the fans across Europe and North America, these guy's have real passion about clubbing and have a love for DJs, something seldom felt in the UK, however the great thing about the UK music scene is its diversity that crosses genre boundaries.
What makes these European trance DJ's so popular though? For a start they’re very selective about their gigs, they may only play 3 or 4 UK gigs a year and all at huge festivals or the cream of UK's clubs like Turnmills or Godskitchen. Imagine you’re in a crowd of 10,000 clubbers with a big sound system and laser display, the DJ drops a big trance riff and you’re in heaven. Try to do that in a small 200 capacity club and your 'I am a god' pose makes you look a prick. But another element is cheese! We can all be very British and sometimes get embarrassed about a cheesy trance riff. Away from the UK it's not so much a problem.
