Cally Gage at Polysexual South vs Twisted — all for the toss of a coin

Reported by mostwantedkat / Submitted 20-12-06 17:18

On Friday December 22nd, London’s original superclub Heaven will be rocked to its very foundations with some of the fiercest hard dance and trance the capital has ever been witness to, at the Heavenly Xmas Ball. Two titans of the clubbing scene, Polysexual South and Twisted go head to head in what will surely be a legendary battle of the arenas. Rob Tissera, BK, Lisa Pin-Up, Phil Reynolds, Kevin Energy, Trevor McLachlan, Ed Real, Mike Koglin, Marc French... oh and a certain Miss Cally Gage.

One of the nicest people in hard dance and a fricking phenomenal DJ to boot, Cally has been on a joyride to musical heaven ever since she won the tidy Weekender DJ Competition over two years ago. Now a resident at Frantic and Colours and a headliner at practically every other single night you could think of, she’s a force to be reckoned with in the very best sense. But for the flip of a coin and the forces of gravity, it could all have been so different for the girl from Peterborough...

You’re playing the massive Polysexual South Arena at Polysexual South vs Twisted at Heaven on December 22nd. Have you ever played at Heaven before? If you have, what’s it like as a venue? If not, how much are you looking forward to it?

I have played at Heaven quite a few times now, but have never played for Polysexual South. Heaven is a fab venue and I have been to some great nights there, it’s just so huge — there are always new places to wander off to!

I am so chuffed to have been asked to play at this event, especially in the Polysexual Arena — how exciting! Polysexual is such a huge promotion and brand, so it is definitely a party that I’ve been really looking forward to for ages and have had circled in my diary for quite a while!

Bring it on!

It’s got to be one of the ultimate venues for DJs to play in. It’s steeped in history, it’s had the cream of DJs play it at one point or another, it’s where all the original rave parties started off and Madonna played her first ever UK gig there in 1982. How does that make you feel about walking onto the main stage?

Wow, I didn’t know that fact about Madonna — that’s pretty cool! All of that has made me feel pretty nervous now actually, haha!

Nah, I’m really looking forward to it actually, it’s going to be such a great party and to be on the same line up as people like Rob Tissera, BK and Lisa Pin-Up, I’m chuffed to bits to be honest.

Have you got what it takes to hold you own? What does it take?

Umm I hope so, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have got this far — what do you reckon?!! I’m not really sure what it takes, I haven’t really thought about it. Probably just getting up there, getting on with it and making sure you enjoy every moment — that’s what I do anyway!

The party’s on December 22nd so it’s going to be a big one for a lot of Londoners who want one last big bash with their mates, before they head home for the holidays. Have you got anything special planned for them?

At this moment in time, I’ll be honest with you and say no — maybe a Mrs Claus outfit?!!! Although, if I did have something special planned, I wouldn’t tell you now anyway — it would ruin the surprise! You’ll all just have to come along and find out what it is!

How are you going to spend your Christmas? Are you a big family person or do you like to spend it with your mates on a mission?

I’ve never really had a big family, so Christmas was always quite quiet to be honest. Now though, that has all changed as both mine and Andy’s families get together for a massive Christmas — it’s great and definitely the way I’ve always wanted to spend my Christmas Day. I can’t wait for Christmas, I get so excited for about 4 weeks before — I’m like a little girl and probably do Andy’s head in the whole time leading up to it, haha!

What would your perfect Christmas involve?

Well, both mine and Andy’s families would be together somewhere really Christmassy, with lots of snow — I just love the snow. We would all get up together and have loads of lovely presents to open. Then we’d all sit down to a massive three course lunch, that would obviously have been cooked by someone else, so we can all enjoy it. Then all of our friends would come over to have lots drinks and open more presents, we’d then all play games and drink into the evening, where we would have a nice buffet, watch a lovely film and all go to bed dreaming of Santa!!!

Do you think you’ll ever leave Peterborough? Are you a real homebird or do you hear the bright lights of the big cities calling?

God, I’ve lived in Peterborough all of my life and have always said that I don’t want to settle down here! But the thing is, it is really central to everywhere (which is handy) and all of my friends are here too. I was going to move to Manchester a couple of years ago, but Andy decided to re-locate here instead. I think we plan to stay here for a while, but if we were ever to move, it would be to a bigger city and probably most definitely Manchester. I just love everything about that city and have loads of friends up there too — so it would definitely be the place we’d consider I think.

They’ve called you the Princess of Hard House. Who in your opinion is the queen, and would you like to go head to head with her in a back to back battle?

Will (owner of all things Frantic) originally named me the ‘Princess of Hard House’ and I’m just chuffed to bits with that, it’s so lovely — don’t you think?!!!

Thinking about it, I would probably call Lisa Lashes the Queen of Hard House. She has been within the scene for so long now and is still at the top of the game, she is definitely an inspiration to a lot of people I think. I would be honoured to play b2b with Lisa, but we do play quite different styles and speeds, so I’m not really sure how that would work. Maybe we could just play on the same night, but dress up as Princess and Queen?!!

How instrumental has Will Frantic been in developing your career?

Will has obviously been working with me from the very beginning and took me under his wing right from the start, something that I’ll always be very grateful to him for. He has always been a huge source of inspiration and advice to me and of course deals with my career on a daily basis. I’d also like to think though, that I have built up my career on my own through the hard work that I’ve put in and just because of the person that I am really.

I hope that Will and I will carry on working together throughout my career, as I do value him as my Manager completely and think that he is definitely the best person to have behind you in this scene.

Do you think there’s a bit of a divide between northern hard dance and southern hard dance?

The scene between the north and south is very different, partly due to the different crowds going to each party, but I don’t think that this causes a divide……musically, it’s certainly not as noticeable as it used to be. I’m really luck in the fact that I get to travel all over with my DJ’ing now — whether it be North, South, East or West and I really don’t think there is a divide to be honest. It’s good that everyone is different, the country would be a very boring place otherwise and it means that I get to play all sorts of different styles wherever I go.

You like to mix the bosh with a good old bit of hands in the air. What do you think it is about euphoric tracks that have such huge emotive powers? Why do you love that element of dance music?

I’m not really sure what it is — but the euphoric stuff that I play, must just really tug at peoples emotions, haha! I love all elements of hard dance though, that’s why I like to play the whole range! Admittedly, I now find myself playing the peak time slot more and more and this is definitely my favourite time to play, as I get to play the more euphoric stuff, which is what I have started to prefer a lot more of — it still has to have a nice tough rolling, bassline mind you, but the breakdown has to be quite euphoric as well, to really get people going you know?!

You burst out of nowhere winning the tidy Weekender Dj Competition. The legend goes that you sold your Weekender ticket and tidy Russell literally tossed a coin to decide if he’d let you in or not. Luckily for us and you the fates were with you! What do you think you’d be doing now if the toss had gone the other way?

It was exactly like that actually, crazy isn’t it?!! The whole weekend was just like a whirlwind and I can’t believe that was over 2 years ago now — but I am soooo happy with everything that has happened since, it’s been incredible.

At the moment, I still have a full time job — not for long hopefully! So if nothing had happened that weekend, I’d probably still be plodding along with my job in the day, mixing every spare minute I had at home and sending demo’s out left, right and centre, haha!

Do you have any back up plans?

Nah, I don’t really have a back up plan — I don’t think I ever have had with anything, haha! I just get on with what I do, work as hard as I can all the time and look to the future. Hopefully with all of that, I won’t be needing a back up plan!

The past two years must have been a phenomenal ride for you. Do you set yourself goals each year to achieve or have you been sort of swept up in everything that’s gone on?

It has been a phenomenal ride, but I’ve always tried to make sure that my feet are firmly on the ground at all times. I don’t like to take myself too seriously and become some kind of diva, but I do take my career very seriously and have goals that I want to achieve to take me through to the next step. I always have a plan of where I want to be in say 6 months time and do everything I possibly can to get there — I have a to do list and everything! I think that it is important to enjoy everything as it happens, but to never lose sight of it all, as it could all just go away, especially if I stop working for just a second! It’s quite hard finding time to fit everything in, but I don’t mind as I know that it will all pay off in the — work hard, play hard as they say!

Do you feel like things are settling down a bit for you now so you can concentrate more on picking your direction?

Haha, not at all — I’d say that things are definitely getting busier. I seem to have at least 3 gigs a weekend at the moment and they’re all over the bloody place! I feel that this year has definitely been a turning point for me, in the fact that everything has been taken up a gear and I’m now constantly playing all over the country to more and more people. I’m loving every minute though and it’s definitely a position that I’ve always wanted to be in, so I’m really grateful for that. This year has been absolutely incredible and makes me even more exciting for 2007 — I can’t wait to see what happens then!

What did you career’s teacher say you would be???

Haha, not a hard house DJ I can tell you that for sure!

I remember doing this questionnaire thing at school and apparently by looking at my answers, by the end of it I would be told what my perfect job would be! Can you guess what jobs I got?!!! Well, I got either a prison warden or a dog groomer — can you believe it?!! So far from the truth it makes me laugh now! But kids, if you’re reading this — listen to your careers advisor please, they normally get it right, I’m sure!

Who’s been your biggest non-musical inspiration?

I’m not sure about that really — possibly my mum?!! Inspiration is maybe the wrong word though, but she’s been someone that has always been behind me 110% in everything that I do — my mum is always there for me, has always believed in me and has been proud in everything that I’ve ever achieved.

Do you believe in God?

Oh I don’t know really — I honestly never think about it but wouldn’t like to say no, so I’ll hedge my bets! I’m not the kind of person to have blind faith, or believe in fate: I think that everyone is accountable for everything that they do and really creates their own destiny and path in life. I suppose there may be someone or something out there, but I’m not sure that is a God. It’s not a subject I’ve given too much thought though!

Are you concerned about the environment? What do you do to do your bit?

I have become more concerned about the environment in the last few years, especially as you see horror stories and predictions all over the place on TV, papers and in magazines. I try to do my bit, but I think like many people I could probably do more — I do make sure all the light switches and plugs are turned off in the house when they’re not being used and I also recycle everything when I can!

How well did you do in school?

Ah well, I’d love to say that I did brilliantly and got all my GCSE’s and everything — but that would be lying as I didn’t really do too well at all, sorry Mum! I didn’t really enjoy school all that much and you don’t really take it too seriously when you’re there – it hasn’t done me any harm though and I did have some pretty good times when I did go to school!

What do you think about Tony Blair?

I don’t really think much about Tony Blair to be honest. I don’t really keep up with politics, and they all seem to say exactly the same things, whatever party they’re from. I did watch ‘Love Actually’ the other day though and if Hugh Grant was up for Prime Minister – he’d definitely have my vote!

What’s your favourite non-dance tune?

Oh god, this is quite a hard one as I could listen to hard house all day, every day! If you twisted my arm though and made me choose something, I’d probably go for something by ‘Take That’!

Madonna or Kylie and why?

I used to like Madonna when I was younger, but I’m not so sure about her stuff now. So because of that I’d probably go for Kylie — she has released some pretty decent songs and her concert looks like a lot of fun, I’d like to go along to that one day!

Ibiza or Goa and why?

I’d have to choose Ibiza, purely for the fact that I haven’t been to Goa before, so I wouldn’t like to comment — I’ve heard it’s a beautiful place though.

Madders or Will?

It would have to be Will, each and every time! As I said before, he has been the one to support me through everything right from the beginning — so he would pretty much win over anybody, apart from Andy, lol!

More: So we sat on Santa’s lap and told him what we wanted. We asked for the biggest DJs, the best music around and a brand spanking delicious new venue. Then Santa whispered in our ears and asked if we’d been good boys and girls this year?

Well obviously we have been party people because we’ve got everything we asked for and MORE! There’s no coal in our stockings this Christmas – instead we’ve got a hard house musical selection box your granny would mug you underneath the Christmas tree for!

Not ONLY have we got one of the fiercest line-ups of DJs possible, not ONLY is our array of music gorgeously diverse and includes everything from hard house and hard trance to hardcore, electro and house – but we’ve also combined two of the hottest names in dance music, Polysexual South and Twisted and taken them to Heaven – literally.

This isn’t just big, it’s not even huge, it is quite frankly one MOTHER of a Christmas party. So if you’re leaving the capital to go home for the holidays on Saturday, take this chance to have it one last time for 2006 with your London friends on Friday 22nd December.
