HeatUK goes double Dutch with Charly & MvDJ at the 5th birthday

Reported by Batch & benz / Submitted 10-10-06 17:15

Our Dutch neighbours are generally recognised as the people who put on the biggest and most stunning hard dance parties in the world, giving new meanings to the words ‘scale’ and ‘spectacle’. They’ve got it pretty good over there, with regular events bringing the biggest names in the hard dance world to extravagant, multi-thousand capacity events. Dance Valley, Sensation White (and indeed Sensation Black), Q-Dance, In Qontrol, Impulz, Emporium Party... they are spoilt for choice. Why then do so many of them make the pilgrimage over the channel to our fair isle? Well, Charly & MvDJ are two young Dutch djs who are here to tell us why them and their countrymen can’t get enough of the UK.

It’s hard to find anyone more enthusiastic than the Dutch. This spirit is exemplified by these sprightly young fellows, who will be joining in the celebrations at HeatUK’s 5th Birthday at Koko with a set in the Summit vs Puzzle Project room. They are both involved in the dance music scene in the Netherlands in one way or another and are both determined to make it big as djs. I think I’ve said enough already — HF ladies and gents, I present to you Charly & MvDJ!

What is it that keeps bringing the Dutch contingent over to the UK?

Charly: Erm, two busses mainly bring us over. Haha no seriously, ever since I visited Hard House Academy for the first time, I feel some sort of need to go there or to any other hard dance party in the UK once in a while. The atmosphere, the sound systems, the people, but most of all the music are absolutely amazing. The way UK djs play their music has always fascinated me, I must have English ancestors or something, I can’t explain it really.

MvDJ: I think so too. Our people just like the atmosphere of UK based parties, some of them are truly addicted to going to the UK every few months to visit a party.

Can you describe the dance scene in the Netherlands?

Charly: Well it’s quite a mess if you ask me. There’s techno, minimal, house, trance, tech-trance, hardstyle, hardcore (not the hardcore you know in the UK, you call this kind of music gabber or gabba), schranz, hard dance, hard house and probably six or seven other styles I forgot to mention. The biggest problem is that almost none of those styles can be merged into one night. Most Dutch clubbers are not so open-minded that they appreciate such a night. Every style has its own nights and an own group of followers. This is not good I think. I’d love to visit a night where hard house, hard dance, techno and trance were blended up into one big mix of sound. Basically the style I like to play myself: mash it up and make some f*ckin noise!

MvDJ: I totally agree with Charly. There are a lot of different styles here in Holland and most of them are not that big. But I think the fact that dance music is developing itself continuously makes it possible to combine more stuff and put more variety in sets which is good. Unfortunately most djs, organisations and party people stick to one style. The only place where you can find more styles nowadays are the bigger festivals, which is a pity in my opinion.

What is HQ?

Charly: Many people will say High Quality was Amsterdam’s longest running club night. I say it’s not just the nights in The Melkweg Venue, I say it’s a feeling. I’ve made so many friends during those nights, experienced so many good vibes and heard so many outstanding records, that I can’t just entitle it as a club night. Even though there hasn’t been an HQ for almost two years, I still feel it’s alive, in small clubs and at major events like Dance Valley. That feeling will never die, I’m sure you will witness it at Heat when all the Dutchies will run around the place! HQ lives!

MvDJ: The party scene will never be the same without HQ. That sounds a little bit like a cheap drama movie, but it’s true. HQ was unique in its own unique way and I really do miss that party. Like Charly I have a lot of good memories of The Melkweg. My passion for UK hard house originated there along with many others. And all the good sets I heard there and the fantastic atmosphere that always filled the place still gives me goose-bumps. I’m glad that this vibe still can be felt at some parties like last Saturday at I Love Hardhouse vs. NRG Flash, where Danny D, the Organ Donors and Proteus showed us what HQ is all about.

MvDJ

Which artists/djs from the UK are causing the most commotion in Holland and why?

Charly: A man named Tom Harding introduced hard dance to Holland; he’s become a legend. With his performances at every Dance Valley and at almost every HQ night for the past ten years, Tom is Holland’s number one hard dance hero. Though there are some other people who are doing very well at the moment. We have our own Cally Gage fan club, some nutter (shouts to RJ haha) even has his own t shirt that says: “Get Gage’d.” Next to that, I’ve seen Batch caining it at DDOD in Amsterdam. People are still talking about that set. PLus there’s guys like Whitby, Mark EG, GRH, MDA & Spherical (the back-to-back set I did with them was an awesome experience) and of course my heroes the Organ Donors are well known to the Dutch crowd.

MvDJ: And that has been proved once again when they played one hell of a massive set last Saturday. A couple of other djs I would like to add are Eddie Halliwell, who impressed us all with his performances where he is always scratching, looping and FXing like crazy. And of course Technikal, who can ensure himself of his own groupie here in Holland. But last and definitely not least also for me, Tom Harding is someone who gets my maximum respect. The energy of this man made many people fall in love with UK music over here in Holland, including me. And last year I even got the honour to play the warm-up set at his solo night. This really was one of my most wicked dj experiences so far! I’m really grateful that he gave a talented dj the opportunity to get some good exposure. And good exposure it was! Because of that party I was asked by UDC to warm-up the Hard Area (formerly known as the HQ Area) at the Dance Valley 2006.

What do you guys do when you’re not spinning?

Charly: I work for a new dj booking agency, check out www.globaltwistmusic.com. We represent a.o. Mark Norman, Cor Fijneman and Ton TB (aka Three Drives, remember ‘Greece 2000’?). Next to that I write press releases for promoters and venues on a freelance basis. I also produce music, often with my partner in crime Nazzz (the guy I do our Audio Sickness project with, a semi-live act that brings you to the edges of hard dance music) and TimeQube. Me and Nazzz have done several tracks, you can have a listen to them at www.myspace.com/charlyandnazzz. My track with TimeQube is also in the player on that page and I’m working on a new hard trance track with Fausto at the moment. I also work for him, I take care of his PR, and I do the same for his record label XSIF Records (new release ‘Inspiration Vibes’ has a huge big phat Digital Kid remix on the flipside!). And of course I love to hang out with my friends and do all the things a 22 year old does (partyyyyyyyyy!). And lately I’ve become an Xbox-o-holic, just can’t stop playing that FIFA game. Gooooooooal!

MvDJ: How nice of you to mention that game, brings back bad memories!

Charly: He’s still pissed because I beat him every time we play that game hahaha!

MvDJ: Anyway, I’m still a student at the moment. I’m in the third year of a marketing and advertising studies degree. In the weekends I work at a company where you can rent audio and light equipment like mixers, speakers and light effects. Back at home I do a lot of chilling with my friends and checking out new music. And I should practice more FIFA on my PS2 so I finally can beat Charly next time haha! Of course partyyyyyyyyy is also very, very, very important!

Charly

What’s the best party moment you’ve ever had?

Charly: I have two. The first one is Fausto’s set at Impulz 2003. He showed me what I wanted to do with my life, something I owe him for big time haha. The second one was at Dance Valley 2005. Halliwell was playing. It had finally stopped raining right before his set started. After a small half hour, he dropped Tony De Vit — ‘The Dawn’ (Dark by Design Remix). At the moment the break dropped, it started to rain softly for a few seconds and the DV helicopters started throwing flowers over the crowd. It was like the master of hard house was there for a minute or two saying: “Thanks for playing the tune, party on!” Goosebumps!

MvDJ: I also have two which are almost the same. This by the way happens a lot with all kinds of stuff between Charly and me, we sometimes even think that we might be two lesbians or something. The only thing we don’t do is menstruate haha! Anyway, my first one is the 2002 edition of the festival Impulz Outdoor. HQ hosted the main stage this time, which was fantastic. It was a perfect night. Picture a big recreational area with a beach and a huge forest surrounding it. Everything from atmosphere to decoration to the sound system to the weather was good. Suddenly during a hand-in-the-air-happy-smiles-everywhere break beautiful fireworks were flying around in the air and it lit the whole area. This was one of the most wicked climax moments ever! The other one is the same Dance Valley 2005 moment. The weather was really bad that weekend but the outside HQ stage was the busiest of all. Around twenty thousand people had gathered to experience the HQ feeling, magic.

What’s the weirdest thing that you experienced during a set?

Charly: Some girl came up to me and asked me to play some R&B… I thought she was making a joke, but she was dead serious. I’ve never laughed at someone that loudly I think. Also not being able to hear my headphones was quite weird, but after a minute I found out that I had forgotten to plug them in. I’m not blonde, or is it blond? Or blondd? Or blund? Someone, please stop me!

MvDJ: The weirdest thing? Hmmm, I can’t think of anything really. But maybe I can amuse you all with the most stupid thing of taking the needle from the wrong record, the record that was playing… Ow wait, at Queensday one year ago I played the warm-up set at an outside party somewhere in Amsterdam. One minute before the start I cued my first record and found out my headphones weren’t working at all. When I pulled them out of the mixer I missed the last part of the plug which had broken and was left behind in the mixer! So I called someone from the organisation and within three seconds about seven people where there with screwdrivers and other tools but no one was able to fix it. Fortunately Danny D was doing I Love Hardhouse at a five minute walk and he was so kind to lend us his spare mixer.

Charly @ HQ presents I Love HardHouse 2005

What’s your connection with the UK? Have you got any friends around here?

Charly: Of course you Batch and I are mates, but also Craig Stuart (me and Nazzz will stay at his place during the Heat weekend, big up Craig!), Tina Martin, Shaun M, Sam Fury and Jennie Rix are good friends of mine. MDA & Spherical are top lads, and so is Alfie Wonderboy. And of course there’s Danny D, the Englishman who lives in Amsterdam. He’s responsible for some very big things that have happened during my still young career. He’s a true friend (oh my God, this is getting a bit too soft isn’t it?). And I just love the UK, like I said: I think I’ve got some English blood running through my veins. I think I was Ivanhoe in a previous life. Though I hope I was way more handsome than Roger Moore! I think I’ll try and get an audition to be the next James Bond maybe…

MvDJ: What’s that smell Charly? Danny indeed is putting a lot of energy in trying to get young talent into the business. Muchos respectos for that! A few months ago I met you (Batch) at DDOD which was very cool! And I have some good memories with Alf as well (don’t forget to bring your headphones gain mate Wink). But the biggest connection is still the music.

What do you think the future will bring you?

Charly: Hopefully my first release will be realised soon. The track me and Fausto are working on will be out somewhere next year carrying the XSIF Records label on the piece of black gold. But what the rest of the future will bring… I have no idea Probably it will bring me my status of superhero and I’ll be able to fly, so I can finally visit the UK without having to book an Easyjet flight again (can’t stand their stewardesses).

MvDJ: I really don’t know what the future will bring. DJing has had so many ups and downs for me lately. One month I’m playing four gigs and the next my schedule is empty. And then all of a sudden I’m on Heat UK’s line-up! Life is full of surprises but I would like it all to become more regular. That’s why I’m planning to do some proper promotion up in Holland and the UK and hopefully it will bring some good things. In the near future I also want to enter the world of producing, me and Charly and our friend Tjeerdo have already spent some hours in Charly’s little studio, soon we’re going to pick that up again and try to create some corkers, we’ll be sure to post some clips on the boards, promised.

What are you looking forward to the most at Heat UK 5th Birthday?

Charly: Seeing all the UK girls going wild in front of me. I’ve been dreaming about it for years, so I hope you don’t let me down ladies! I also look forward to seeing Budha when he gets hold of his first glass of English beer that night, that’s always a good moment for him haha! (The people who know Budha will confirm this).

MvDJ: Good point about the UK girls. Next to that I’m looking forward to joining the English party vibe again! I’ve been to Hard House Academy a couple of times and I really love the outstanding vibe that’s around and all the extreme flashing and glittering party clothes. And of course the mega back to back to back set Technikal, Marc French and Spencer Freeland are going to do. Legends!

MvDJ @ Dance Valley 2006

What will you be thinking about on the way home after this weekend?

Charly: My exact thoughts/ shouts will be: “Oh my God, this plane is bouncing up and down too much, I hope it doesn’t crash! Nazzz, can I borrow that vomit bag of yours? Mine is already full.”

MvDJ: My trip back will be by bus. That means 100% party time in the bus and outside at gas stations where we will stop to do some street raves. We won’t be back in Amsterdam until Sunday evening. Think my thoughts will keep the Heat party experience alive for at least until the moment I fall asleep back home and probably for much longer.

MvDJ and Charly: Thanks for the interview guys, and we will see you and everyone else next Saturday. We’d like to ask all the UK people to come to the room where we will be playing to have a beer with us, would be amazing. We’ll definitely make sure you’ll feel the Heat hahaha! Also a big shout to Denny Yau for supplying us with the best pictures there are. All photos used in this interviews were taken by him.
