Paul Glazby — 8 hours & a lot more

Paul Glazby: a name that has become ingrained within the hard house circuit. He’s been instrumental in its development, through his productions and his sheer untouchable talent. Through determination, accessibility and a lot of bloody hard work, Paul has earned every accolade he’s received, but one of the biggest events in his career to date was to recently shape, build and progress a whole eight hours of his own night all on his tod. Was he biting off more than he could chew?
Not a small task to be under taken, for weeks before the event Paul spent hours trolling through all of his 1000s of records, practising, pacing and trying to figure out how he’d pull off this mammoth task. Come the 22nd July, I think we can all agree he needn’t have worried, everyone that got to witness this aural bible will be sure not to forget it. And since the event Paul’s management have been inundated with requests for him to take the show on the road. Has he started something that will change the face of hard dance? Re-ignite how a night should be built? Show everyone how it really should be done?
Let’s find out his thoughts . . .
So Paul, first things first, how was it?
It was absolutely brilliant to be honest! It went so fast I couldn’t believe it, the crowd were amazing all night, we had no technical problems and I didn’t pass out — bonus!
Kate told us in an interview we did with her a few weeks ago that you were proper dreading it, tell us how you felt before doing it?
If I’m honest I did think in the weeks leading up to it, “what the hell have I said I’ll do this for!” But once I started sorting out all the vinyl and going through all the tunes I played from back in ’96/’97 when I was learning to mix I got pretty excited and I couldn’t wait for it.
I’d forgotten about how many good tunes there had been. Most of us can remember the BK Hardbeats or the earlier stuff on Tidy, but when I found the early Baby Doc tracks or the really old Tripoli stuff and blew the dust off ‘em, it brought back so many memories of clattering mixes round at Tim Tom (an old friend of mine)’s house. Thankfully I wasn’t clattering mixes at The Fridge — not many anyway, lol!
How were you feeling about it when you woke up on the Saturday morning?
As I said before, I really couldn’t wait to get there. We got up about 8am which I thought was a mistake as I had to be up ‘til about 8 the next morning, but as it turned out I felt fine. I had turned down the chance to play at an after hours club straight after I Love VC but I was wishing I’d done it, I was wide awake and still had a stack of tunes to play.
It’s Summer, there were a lot of people away and with the negative press the Fridge had received of late, you must have been worried about attendance. Were you shocked at how many people did turn up?
Yes the turn out was great. It started off a little quiet which is unusual for our events as they usually fill up by 11pm but by 12.30 the place was rockin’ and it stayed that way until the end.
So, to the set itself. How did you plan it and what kind of stuff did you play?
I started off with some Sharp Boys stuff and some other more obscure warm up material, then went into a lot of early Tripoli stuff, Experts, DJ Ziad, Steve Thomas and just built it up from there. I did little sections of Tony de Vit tracks and Paul King’s Trauma/F1 stuff, I played a lot of BK’s early material and I had dug out loads of Baby Doc tracks which all went down really well.
The only real plan I had was to start at 140bpm and up it by 1bpm every 30 minutes, I finished the night off at around 158, which is plenty really!
How many tracks would you reckon you played during the set?
I think all together I played about 150.
I’m sure you’re aware it went down well with everyone in the house and not a bad word was said — how does that make you feel?
It makes me pleased that people enjoyed it; it means we’ve had another successful
I Love VC event, the clubbers will feel they had their money’s worth and it answers my question of whether I can play for 8 hours without boring people to death!
You are associated with the harder side of hard dance. Tell us, how conscious were you not to ramp up the bpms too soon?
As I said earlier, the only plan I had was to start at 140 and build it up gradually from there. At around 1am the bpms were at 146, so at that point I pushed it up to 150 then carried on building, I think it went fairly well, anyone expecting a hoover thrashdown for 8 hours would have been disappointed, but I think most people either guessed right or were pleasantly surprised.
There would have been a lot of material that today’s younger clubbers would not have heard. How many tracks in your set were more than 8 years old, and how well did they go down?
That’s the amazing thing, the tune I got asked most about on the night was an old Baby Doc thing — Hellfire Club’s ‘Voodoo Magic’. I remember hearing Tony de Vit play this at Sundissential in Birmingham, that must have been late ‘97 and I’ve got kids asking me where they can get it from in 2006! Goes to show that all these people saying that “the music’s got to change” and “people don’t like the classic hard house sound” — they don’t know what they’re on about!
An average day shift is 8 hours. How hard was it to be stuck in the dj box with no toilet? How did you manage?
That was the main worry I had, I didn’t want to get trapped in the toilet by some random! Amazingly, I managed until 4.30 then I put ‘Beautiful’ on, legged it and got back before the end of the breakdown. It was only after I got back to the dj box that I started to feel a bit tired, until then I’d been in the zone behind the decks. Having a moment away broke the momentum, but by then I only had 90 minutes to go and I’d been saving all the RR Fierce stuff to play at the end so I had that to look forward to!
Your manager has told us the phone hasn’t stopped regarding your 8 hour set, does this surprise you?
Yes it does, but it’s good to hear.
When and where do you plan to roll this out?
We’re in talks with a few of the major clubs around the country so hopefully you’ll see me putting a full days work in at a club near you soon.
We understand Kate has had numerous requests for a track listing of the night? Is that possible?
It’s possible, but not likely, I haven’t got the time to sit and list them all, you’ll have to come to the next one to see for yourself! Don’t forget your pad and pen.
Apart from rolling out your 8 hour set, what else are you up to in the forthcoming months?
We’re just planning the next VC album, possibly an album to run alongside the tour if it goes ahead. I’d like to license some of the tracks I played in the 8-hour set and do a condensed version over 2 CDs. Nothing is concrete as yet but watch out on ilovevc.com for news.
The next I Love VC is in November and there’s a pretty big line up planned for that one!
