K90’s ‘Red Snapper’ gets a Twisted remix!

It was a track that was never supposed to see the light of an A Side. The record label got its name mixed up with another tune by accident and never changed it back. Its creator never imagined in a million years that it would be this big. Somehow, against all the odds ‘Red Snapper’ by K90 became one of the biggest tracks of all time, a seminal tune that any trance or hard dance dj worth their salt would put in their top ten . . .
So when Mark Doggett announced that he was going to allow his baby to be remixed, the dance world gave a collective gasp of pant-wetting eager anticipation. And believe us, it’s been worth changing your underwear for. The remixes, including a brilliantly twisted version from Vinylgroover and the Red Head, are currently setting global dance floors on fire.
On Saturday 5th August you too can get caught up in the fishing frenzy at the massive Red Snapper launch party in conjunction with Twisted. Featuring a live set from K90 as well as a rare tech-trance set from none other than Phil Reynolds, this is one night so hot we recommend you bring a fire extinguisher!
We caught up with the man in question . . .
How did your world tour go?
World tour? I wouldn’t say I’ve been on a world tour as such, but I have been steadily clocking up a few airmiles with shows in Finland, Malaysia, Ibiza and Holland so far this year! Looking forward, I’ve got a closing party in Ibiza, a five-date tour of New Zealand coming up in September, plus some shows in Australia towards the end of the year.
What was the most mental place you played?
I’d have to say this year’s Invasion: Ibiza at Eden was huge for me, in more ways than one! I think most people who’ve been to Ibiza to party would agree that it’s still a place where anything goes and anything is possible. Believe me, this trip was no exception! Another big highlight for me in 2006 was playing to 10,000 in a single arena at a World Cup 06 ‘kick off’ party in Malaysia.
What are the crowds like around the world? Do you get different reactions from different places?
You know, once the music is pumping, crowds around the world are pretty similar. True, there are slight variations from country to country, but in the main there’s not a lot of difference, music really is a universal language.
So Twisted are hosting the launch party for the 2006 remixes of Red Snapper — what made you want to work with them?
I’ve worked with Twisted on a couple of occasions, plus I’ve known one of the main organisers — Most Wanted’s Craig Paxton — for some time. Craig and I get on pretty well and let’s just say we’re both comfortable with each other’s work!
I do apologise but I have to ask it — why on earth did you call your tune ‘Red Snapper’? Are you fond of fishing? Where did that name come from?
You don’t have to apologise, it is a weird name, and it’s got bugger all to do with fish, fishing or anything nautical! I’m gonna let you into a little secret! The track is not really called ‘Red Snapper’ at all! Basically, when I sent this and another track in to the record company for approval, the track names got mixed up! Red Snapper is actually the name of the other track I’d sent in and the track that everyone now knows now as ‘Red Snapper’ is really called ‘Genetik’! Well, it was called ‘Genetik’; I can hardly swap the names back now can I?
Why do you think it’s such a seminal track? What makes its stand out from all its contemporaries?
Who knows why people pick up on a particular track, that’s one of the great things about making music! I think record producers that find ‘The Formula’ for making hits tend to be around for a short time and then disappear! ‘Red Snapper’ actually began life as a B Side so at the time of the record’s release, neither I nor the record company could have ever dreamed of the acclaim the track has managed to build up over the years.
Who decision was it to remix it for 2006 and why?
The decision to do 2006 remix package was mine and if I’m honest it’s my way of saying goodbye to the track. I’d never actually remixed the track myself before and when I decided to do just that for my live mix album ‘Destinations’, I decided to do one last set of remixes by the people who I felt would do the name justice.
Do you get quite precious when someone else is remixing it?
I suppose I do in a way, but I try to keep my nose out of the remixing process as much as possible if I can help it. I like to leave what goes into a particular remix up to the remixer as it is his or her’s own interpretation.
Do you have complete authority over whether or not a remix is chosen for release? It is your baby after all . . .
Yep, I own the track and label so that buck stops with me.
It’s a well know fact that you don’t do collaborations with anyone. Is there any particular reason why?
It’s just never felt right to be honest. I have quite a measured way of working, building a piece of work over sometimes a number of weeks. Sitting in a studio with another producer for three days knowing that what comes out the other end has to be a ‘product’ doesn’t really appeal to me.
Don’t get me wrong, there are a good number of producers who do collaborations that I know and respect, but at the moment it’s just not for me. My belief is that big tracks, the classic music we all know and love, is born rather than rushed or pushed. I also feel that collaborations are not really about the music and more about putting names together for saleability.
If you had to do a collaboration with someone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I’ve sat here for five minutes thinking of an answer to this question and sorry I just don’t have one!
Would you ever remix a classical track, like a Beethoven or a Mozart? Don’t you think that would be the ultimate dance floor challenge, to remix something that long and complicated?
It’s already been done by among others William Orbit (remixed by Ferry Corsten) with Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’ so it’s a style I probably wouldn’t approach. Ferry’s remix is superb and has won awards, so in my opinion is an absolute classic that can’t be beaten!
To say you’ve got energy behind the decks is a bit of an understatement. What gets you going when you’re performing?
First off it’s the tune selection. I have confidence in what I’m playing so that energises me. The energy created is then hopefully transmitted to the audience, then all being well they feed back to me which gets me even more excited! Then we got a whole ‘two way’ thang going on!
What do you think of djs like Paul Van Dyk who just stand there and twiddle a few knobs and never interact with the crowd?
Well, he must be doing something right to be where he is! I dunno, maybe the style of music has something to do with how he performs behind the decks? In fact, thinking about it I can’t think of any superstar djs that have it large behind the decks! I know there’s a whole lot of hype surrounding djs like PvD and sometimes the hype it’s a little unfounded! I think Paul was one of the djs making the right noises when the whole global dance music explosion happened back in around 2000 and as such has his name set in stone.
Who’s your favourite dj and why?
My favourite other dj would have to be Ferry Corsten. He’s stood the test of time and continued to develop his own sound and write the music he wants to write. His energy and enthusiasm is still visible when he plays and considering some of the places he’s played and the sights he’s seen it shows to me that it’s still all about the music. On top of that he’s a bloody nice bloke!
Why the name K90?
K90 was originally KA90 back in the day when I was part of a two piece production team. One day, we wrote a tune but couldn’t think of a name for the track so my mate randomly typed two letters ‘KA’ and two numbers ‘90’. We were doing hardcore back then and were signed to Kickin’ Records. They decided that it would be better to drop the ‘A’ and K90 was born.
You’ve been a long time in the industry. How you would compare the dance scene now with the scene 10 years ago? Do you think there’s as much creative energy now as there as back then?
I really don’t tend to look back that much to be honest, which helps keep my thinking fresh. Either that or I’ve just got a shite memory! Things have definitely moved on though with plenty of new producers coming through. This is all been helped by advances in technology making it much easier to make music and get it heard these days!
It’s summer season and the 18–30s are living it up — how do you rate Ibiza?
Well, I played out there in July and ended up staying for four days! From my viewpoint Ibiza is still as loony as it ever was! Clubbing aside, it is a beautiful island of which San Antonio is just a tiny part and I personally love the place!
I’m coming round to lunch and I want Red Snapper — how would you cook it?
Score the fish diagonally with a sharp knife and place in a foil parcel. Rub in some salt, pepper and garlic and squeeze over the juice of a lemon. Wrap the foil around the fish leaving the top part open. Cook in a medium oven for about half an hour.
What are the perfect tunes to mix ‘Red Snapper’ into and out to?
For me, any other K90 track!
What’s next for you?
I’ve started work on tracks for my next artist album, which all being well will also include a DVD of on and off stage footage. There’ll also be some documentary style bits and bobs to give people an insight into what happens when the lights are down!

K90 is a legend. Has definately produced some of the best harder edged trance tunes ever.
Going back to the interview, to say PVD just twiddles knobs, the interviewer obviously has never seen him play when he has ableton, vinyl scratch, 2 cdjs and a keyboard on the go.

K90 has produced some cracking tracks. My personal favourite is one of his early Acid Trance numbers Genesis.
Keep up the good work and the DJs will keep hammering the tracks.

I'd rather see PVD create a brilliant set from scratch than see someone else just play a pre-recorded 'set' and dance along to it on stage. Pffft.
