Who are Project Bosh?

Coming from virtually nowhere in the last year Project Bosh are currently vying for Best Breakthrough DJ in the Hardcore Heaven Awards with the likes of K-Complex and Joey Riot. So who are Project Bosh? This Portsmouth based B2B2B trio plus MC are residents for legendary Southcoast hardcore night Fusion and can be seen on the line up for most upcoming HTID events. With a pretty impressive gig list and a reputation for being slightly crazy I wanted to welcome you to the world of Bosh!

Hi, welcome to Harderfaster! Firstly, congratulations on your nomination for Best Breakthrough DJ at this year’s Hardcore Heaven awards, more on that later. For now do you want to introduce yourselves?
Xom: I’m Xom (Ben), I’ve been dj’ing for about 4 years, started dj’ing out alone before the creation of Project Bosh, mainly for my own hardcore night Elev8, I like my hardcore fast and full of energy and my mixing full of cutting, chopping and tricks!
Dja: Hi I’m dja (Aaron), I’ve been mixing for as long as I can remember (10 seconds? About 8 years! Much longer than I remember!) and have been making music in some form or another since the Amiga was around. I first played out at an afterparty at a club years ago and the odd set here and there ‘til I played for Elev8 and met Ben and Mikey.
Optimus Prime: Alrite I’m Mikey, AKA Optimus Prime and I’ve been on the decks for about 8 years now, getting a bit dizzy, mind, at least it’s 33rpm I guess. I had my first set back in 2003 at the Glasshouse in Portsmouth. Breeze & Styles were playing. I was known as Hardcore Mike back then tho.
MC UV: I’m MC UV (Dave), I’ve been mc’ing since ‘89, and I’ve seen all the different styles of hardcore come and go. I still love my old skool but also like all the new sounds and styles on the scene.
I suppose the most obvious question to ask is how did you guys meet and what prompted you to start dj’ing together?
X: We were all doing our own solo gigs until we met at Out of Order in Southampton, dja was b2b with someone else, and I was b2b with Optimus Prime. Following that night we all became really close mates and decided to start mixing together as a trio. Back then we were known as “Xom b2b DjA b2b Optimus Prime feat. MC UV.” Somewhat of a mouthful!
OP: I met these benevolent young chaps and we formed what is now known as Project B.O.S.H. I owe a lot of this to Coley, who sent my demo off to Ben who at the time was running Elev8. I didn’t think it was good enough to send away, she did it without me knowing. It’s good that someone had belief in my skills. (Xom — “This demo cd was, and still is, the best demo cd anyone has ever sent in to me!! I couldn’t believe the scratching on it . . . ”)
Where did the “Project Bosh” name come from?
X: As our bookings started to increase, a promoter brought it to our attention that “Xom b2b DjA b2b Optimus Prime feat. Mc UV” took up a ridiculous amount of flyer space so we decided it was time for a new name. We’ve always liked to be involved with the ravers, so we held a competition to choose a new name. Project Bosh won.
A: Can’t remember who won it but whoever did won a ticket and didn’t go to the gig! There were some funny entries too and some that came close, the Dontstayin regulars seemed to like that competition as I remember!
OP: Yeah Chalkyboy from Milton Keynes won it, but he couldn’t make it to the gig in the end.
How did you all get into the hardcore scene and who are your biggest influences?
X: I was always into my hardcore before I began to mix, was never really into my raving when I was younger but had a healthy collection of Tapepacks from events like Fusion, Adrenalin and others. When I began to mix I started with trance and hard house, but soon realised that it was all becoming dull and boring, so I turned to my first love, Hardcore. I haven’t looked back and doubt I ever will.
The biggest influences on my style of mixing would have to be Luna C and Pastis & Beunri from Spain. These guys put so much extra into the mixes they do, you can never fail to be amazed. I’d like to think that some people think the same about some of the tricks in our sets
A: I got into hardcore by nicking my mates’ older brothers’ tapes they bought into school, from events around ‘93–’95. I’d still kill to get a copy of the Fusion 95 @ Portsmouth Guildhall that I used to play on repeat. I have a perfect copy in my head still to this day and I haven’t heard it for years!
My biggest influences list is huge, far too big to realistically list, but Druid, Hixxy, Sharkey, Ramos, Supreme, Sunset Regime, Kevin Energy, Jon Doe to name a few have been great influences in both my production and mixing. But there’s a lot more, I am easily influenced musically!
OP: It was a long time ago, back when I was at school, my best mate Matt used to listen to it all the time, I haven’t looked back since. It’s the way to go, even if you don’t like the music, you’ve got to take your hats off to the scene ‘cos it’s the best in the world. I guess who’s made me tick over the years is Scott Brown, but it’s all changing now, all the producers in hardcore are capable of creating stonking tunes these days.
UV: I started mc’ing on the hardcore scene at a small party at Racton Ruins (Hampshire) and I’ve been playing regularly at various events since. My biggest influences these days are probably Ben & Mikey with their crazy arse mixing. And Mc Knight, they all keep me on my toes.
What sort of sound can the ravers expect from a Project Bosh set? Who are your favourite producers?
X: The beauty of Project Bosh is that we all have our preferred styles but none of us stick to only one type of hardcore, this gives lots of variety in our sets. I love the cheesy, sing-along numbers, but also like a hefty dose of dirtiness, some break beat, some old school and a few children’s classics all thrown into the mix. My Favourite producers at the moment are Stormtrooper, Supreme & Sunset Regime, and of course our very own DJ A.
A Cheers Ben! Can’t add a lot to that, except you’ll probably not hear me play many cheesy tunes at all, swapping them out for the harder, darker tunes. We don’t stick to any set rules though, sometimes I will drop a vocal tune, same with Ben and Mikey. My list of favourite producers, again limited by space ‘cos I have so many.. So it would be in no particular order, Sunset Regime, Hixxy, Kevin Energy, Tony De Vit and UFO.
OP: I love my hardcore as fast as you can push it. The faster it is the more I get bouncing, I love scratching fast, especially when I’ve got a rash. Does the job for me anyway!
All of you are pretty amazing djs in your own right but together you’ve created something really special. How does it work when you mix? Isn’t it a bit cramped in some dj booths for the three of you?
X: Generally we do 2 tunes each and then swap, although sometimes we just have urges to play tunes and will just jump in and do our thing, it makes things more fluid and for fun.. While someone else is mixing we may end up using the fx or having Mikey doing some of his ridiculous scratching.
A: We’ve got into some pretty small spaces before, it’s a bit fun sometimes and if it’s really cramped then it’s just another good excuse to have a little dance when not mixing!
Bringing the fun back into clubbing, you guys are definitely entertainers behind the decks as well as djs. What’s this I hear about you threatening to wear tutus and fluffies at Digital Circus?
X: Yeah it’s gonna be a classic.. We have a vote going on dontstayin, if we get enough votes it’ll be Project Bosh in the Future Breed room wearing tutus and fluffy boots. I didn’t think the votes would come in as quickly as they have. The ravers have been determined to make it happen. It’s already reached a level where myself, Mikey and UV will be glamming ourselves up!! It’s what hardcore’s all about in my eyes, have a laugh, do some crazy stuff! Get yourself onto DSI, make a vote and the come to event and bring your cameras!!
A: I’ve been banned from this event by my girlfriend! I think she is jealous of my legs . . .
OP Yes, I’m going in Blue, mine’s got sequins, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it!
You’ve come a long way in a relatively short space of time from securing a Fusion residency last year to playing at pretty much every HTID for the foreseeable future and to most recently being nominated in the Hardcore Heaven awards for Best Breakthrough DJ. How did all this come about? You must be pretty pleased with how things are going?
X: Everything’s happened so quick I haven’t really had time to get used to it all. In the space of a year we’ve gone from playing small clubs and bars to playing on the main stage at some of the biggest events in the country alongside djs that we have worshipped for years..
The nomination for Best Breakthrough DJ in the Hardcore Heaven awards has come as a big shock to us all, but we wouldn’t be in this without the support we’ve had from all the Southcoast ravers, and without a doubt the support we’ve been given from promotions like Fusion, Electrik, Adrenalin, Contact, Depth Charge and now HTID for giving us the opportunity.
A: Likewise, it’s only when I look back on things I really see how much things have changed for us. I have a lot of respect for all the djs, promoters, ravers and everyone involved in the scene, and to be playing alongside and for them all is a great honour.
OP: What awards, What djs, huh? Over the moon, better than that, fly vertical for a few more miles until you reach your destination, Planet Uranus! Circle it six times, and then return to earth, that’s if you want to of course!
LOL, ok . . . so moving on, what do you think of the recent thinking on some message boards that says hardcore is getting stale again and not making enough space for new talent?
X: I think the bigger promotions are doing a great job of pushing new talent, obviously it’s the established names that the ravers want to see as much as possible so it makes sense that these get played lots. But with huge events like Fusion, HTID and Uproar giving up and coming djs the opportunity to show their skills on the main stage and in Future breed rooms at some of the biggest venues and events around this can only be a good direction to keep the scene growing.
A: I think those people posting things like that are the stale ones — they probably go to the same event all the time! There are a lot of similarities in the main room line-ups you see at the big raves, but there’s usually some variation. And there’s almost always another room with new talent, or slightly different tunage. I personally think hardcore has never been fresher with so many new sounds around.
OP: Hardcore is not getting stale, I fear that some producers are sitting back on their laurels but there are so many good tunes out there! Gone are the days when you would buy a tape pack and hear ‘Elysium’ (No disrespect — my own all time favourite) for instance, played by 6 djs that night. And for those of you who don’t know what ‘Elysium’ is, it was the Roman name for heaven, a very apt title. I think it’s great that these people have created their own styles because you can choose which dj’s journey you want to take.

Where would you most like to play and why?
X: We love playing anywhere, for us it’s all about the buzz of seeing a group of ravers loving the tunes that we are playing and enjoying themselves. Of course playing to a main arena rammed full with 1000+ smiling faces is something out of this world.
I’d love to play at the hardcore weekender, the atmosphere and vibe there is awesome and everyone well up for the 3-day bosh-up! Also as we’re from the South coast I would love to look down from the stage to a sell-out rave at the Opera House. Plus we wouldn’t mind doing a Project Bosh old skool set, that would be pretty special!
A: On the moon ‘cos it would look cool throwing a massive rave on it! On a more serious note, SE1 in London, that massive long hall room looks like a big buzz to play!
OP: I like playing in sandpits and armpits come to think of it! There’s nothing like knitting ones armpit hair on a hot summer’s day. Hmmm . . . . Takes me back, but apart from that we would bang tunes out anywhere, North, South, East, West but never in the middle cos our neighbours complain too much . . .
UV: Everywhere, The weekender or West Fest would be amazing; the atmosphere would be totally off the hook. Every event we’ve played at has been top quality and all the ravers coming to the events give a great atmosphere and always make our night.
So are there any Project BOSH productions in the pipeline?
X: Production of tunes is our next step, Aaron has been making his own tunes for years now and he’s producing some great work, although having our own preferred styles makes producing a Bosh track quite hard as we have a conflict of styles. Watch this space though, it wont be far off.
A I’ve had a pretty bad year when it comes to production. I was in hospital for a while in January which knocked me back a bit, had an operation in February and in March my computer almost died. I lost a lot of work due to not backing up regularly enough but it gave me the opportunity to beef the machine I produce on up a bit. I have finished a few tunes this year however, and had some nice reception to them when playing them out. My ‘Time’ tune made it onto the Raver Baby 3 tape we shared with Ratpack, hearing the noise in the place on the breakdown brings back some great memories from that night!

OK, some individual questions now . . .
Ben, www.ravers-united.co.uk is one of your projects, tell us a bit about that?
I set the RU site up a few years ago as a tool to assist South Coast hardcore promoters and ravers with their love of hardcore, it’s a place to list events, chat, post photos, mixes and more. We have a hi-res internet radio station running 24 hours a day from the site that allows hardcore djs and producers from around the South Coast to air their mixes with regular shows and guest sets.
Also, I know it’s a long standing joke that you are the pie-man . . . so for the record what actually is your favourite pie and why do you love it so much?
Favourite pie eh?? That’s possibly the hardest question of them all, but I would think it has to be steak, ale and mushroom in a golden puff pastry. Family-sized of course! I don’t know why I love pie so much, they’re just great!! I know there are some other pie-lovers in hardcore. I’d love to challenge some of them to an on-stage pie-eating competition!! Desperate Dan style!
Aaron, you’ve been producing solo for some time now (www.soundclick.com/djauk), what software/hardware do you use?
I wish you hadn’t linked my Soundclick site, I think there’s only one tune on it! (Only joking, I’ll feel inclined to fill it up a bit with more hits!) I tend to stick to mostly software nowadays, back to how I first started off. I started making music when things were mostly studio based, and not having the cash I made tunes using samples on trackers. As I started delving into the hardware side of things, the software front was pushing forwards so I balanced on it for a while before turning entirely software. I recently got hold of a Virus TI though, it’s a wicked piece of kit that I can’t seem to leave alone!
Currently for the software I use Cubase for sequencing, and make most of my sounds on z3ta and vanguard. Most of my effects are free packs you can find on the net, like the Classic series, and most of my percussion is from sample CDs except the kicks. I never stick to any rules here either so sometimes I make loops or parts in other programmes, Buzz being one of them, if only it had less bugs for me!
Mikey, arguably you can scratch as well as the scratchmaster himself DJ Sy. How long have you been scratching and how did you learn to do it so well? Any tips and tricks for us?
Now that’s a very controversial thing to say. All I will say is Sy is an expert and I am better than average. I’ve been scratching for about 6 years, but if you don’t mind me saying I owe my abilities to my dear mum who despite having to raise 4 children by herself (me being the runt of the litter) paid for me to have drum lessons each week for 6 years. A few years later I started transporting every drum skill I had onto a mixer. Right hand (Hi-Hat) became cross fader and left hand (Snare) became left deck, vinyl. Only think missing is Mr Footy (Kick Drum), but I think hardcore beats are big enough on their own, don’t you?
Dave, You’ve MCd at some legendary parties over the years and are a pretty impressive freestyle MC. Do you have a favourite lyric you’ve made up or one you have heard out that stands out in your mind?
I haven’t really got a favourite lyric. I have a few signature lyrics but generally I don’t really have a set style or lyrics when I mc. I like to feed off the boy’s tracks and style and aim for getting crowd participation. (Xom: “So that explains the bite marks in my vinyls . . . “)
