Ali Wilson, the tekelec tsunami

Reported by mostwantedkat / Submitted 30-06-06 15:34

My flatmate hadn’t heard of Ali Wilson. I promptly ran outside to check if our des res had turned in to a stone and whether he was, in fact, living underneath it. You’ll have to forgive my friend. If all you listen to is dodgy remixes of Madonna and Britney Spears then you too may not know about Ali Wilson either. Let me break it down for you . . .

A Mixmag Future Hero, his record label Tekelec produces tech trance that has djs foaming at the mouth with anticipation. His tracks receive consistent and full-blown support from none other than his Holiness, Carl Cox. His skills as a dj have been showcased on Kiss 100. His videos are currently playlisted on Rapture TV. He’s been called the “King of Tek” by John Askew and Nick Sentience has proclaimed for all to hear that his work is “redefining genres.”

Superstar DJ pose!

Makes the phrase ‘next big thing’ seem like a bit of an understatement really…

Now Ali is preparing for a set at the legendary Innovate at Brixton’s Fridge on July 15th alongside Nick Sentience (live), the Edison Factor (live) and Phil Reynolds. We caught up with the wunderkind and asked: “What does it feel like to be pretty much the second coming as far as dance music is concerned?”

Are you looking forward to Innovate on July 15th?

Does a one legged duck swim in circles?

What makes the Innovate nights so special?

I think it’s a few things. The djs that Innovate pick are definitely Innovative. Mac Zimms played the last one (he in my mind is an inspiration in the tracks he makes), also resident Nick Sentience, he’s been doing the business for a long time. The other things that make it special are the crowd, the venue and the Innovate crew. The Fridge has always been a favourite of mine and the Innovate crowd always seem to be more receptive to new sounds!

You’re practically the Messiah according to some in the world of dance music! Do you feel under pressure with the amount of hype you’ve had since you started? Or do you think it was totally justified?

Ali behind the decks at Innovate

Hehe, I don’t know about that but very nice of you to say so! I wouldn’t say I feel pressure from media to much to be honest, I just do what I love and hope the people like it too!

John Askew called you the King of Tek — are there any pretenders to your throne?

Haha, throne? If I had a big fat gold throne I’d sell it and become a millionaire!!!

“It’s redefining genres; it’s doing something different and I like that.” Nick Sentience, DJ Mag, talking about your tune Mayhem in Miami. How did it feel to have someone like Nick Sentience, who’s responsible for creating, pioneering and defining so much of the hard dance sound, say something like that about the music that you’re making?

It was great coming from a legend such as Nick, he’s always inspired me and I’ve always admired his work so for someone like Nick to say that is always good!

You’ve just released Robotek, which was a collaboration with Nick. What was it like working with him?

Nick and I have done a few tracks now and it’s always a pleasure working with him, he works slightly different to me which is all good because we can bounce ideas around to create a good track.

It seems like every dj that comes along now starts up a record label almost as soon as they get going. Why do you think that is?

Yeah that does seem to happen, I suppose like it was for me it’s an outlet to release your tracks and create your own brand!

What makes Tekelec different from the rest?

Tekelec is all sorts of sounds all moulded into one to create a pleasurable listening experience whilst dancing one’s clogs off on the dance floor!

It’s inspired by my experiences throughout my life which are put into audio via the Tekelec gramophone here in the studio!

You’ve got five tracks out at the moment and no less than six more coming out soon, including an EP with Andy Farley. With a production rate like that, would you say that you prioritise being a producer over being a dj?

Yeah I’ve just finished the EP with Farley, one track tough, techy and hard called ‘Butcher’, one deeper/trancey techno called ‘Funxion’ and one funky techno called ‘Environment’!

I wouldn’t say I prioritise production over DJing, it just kinda happens that way! I’m in the studio all through the week so don’t really get that much time for doing bookings!

God turns round to you and says you can either be the number one producer in the world or the number one dj in the world, but if you choose one then you can never do the other again in your life. Which one would you pick?

Are you trying to implode my head?

. . . (half an hour later) No, I still can’t decide!!!

Five of your tracks have made it on to three of Carl Cox’s latest compilations: Carl Cox Global, Carl Cox Tuesdays @ Space and a new mix for DJ Mag. What’s it like having such a heavyweight name giving you such a massive amount of support?

It’s great, there’s been loads of hard work from myself and with the rest of the Tekelec crew (Matt Smallwood, Chris Barnes and me Mum) and it’s nice to see it all paying off and having some of the top djs in the world caning your tracks!

I hear you’ve just had your video for Digital Killas — ‘Rhythm Search’ added to the Rapture TV playlist . . .

Yea we have indeed, really happy about that! Please show your support and vote for it by texting VOTE 785 to 63222! Much appreciated!

If your career could emulate that of any dj, who would it be and why?

Carl Cox for sure, he’s been around for years and still at the top of his game!

Innovate loves Ali!

You’ve got a blank card to collaborate with anyone you want from the world of music. Who would you pick?

Coxy!

Describe yourself as a dictionary definition . . .

One who eats, lives and breathes music and the creator of the Tekelec Gramophone haha!

Just a quick plug here at the end . . . there will be a shop running from my website (www.aliwilson.co.uk) very soon with exclusive releases and mixes so check it out!!!

See ya @ Innovate!!!

Ali Wilson will be playing at:

From: twist on 5th Jul 2006 10:59.54
Am I the only one who thinks this was a dreadfully written piece in bad taste?
Ali making more waves than an earthquake on Boxing day is not funny or offhand references to the tsunami does nothing for the memory of 1000's of people who died.
Ali is a great producer/dj and deserves better. Whoever this Kat is, she needs to have a re-think.

From: mostwantedkat on 5th Jul 2006 17:48.49
HI all. I am terribly sorry if what I wrote has been found offensive, of course I mean no distress to anyone, and my thanks to Steve at Twist for pointing it out. Coming from a background in newspapers, you’d have thought it was something I would have seen straight away. We all learn from our mistakes. Kat x
