Life’s a Riot! @ Twisted

Reported by MostWantedKat / Submitted 27-06-06 17:03

Are you filthy? Are you dirty? Are you a Filthy Dirty Stopout? Then read on my friends . . .

Forget the Kaiser Chiefs — those indie monkeys only managed to predict their riot in 2005. If your finger was really on the pulse you’d know that the real shenanigans started years ago with two guys, a certain Mr Ed Real and another, Mr BK.

Nurtured by Nukleuz, these titans of the hard dance scene have been djs, producers and promoters for years. They’ve spread the love and the fever with their seminal tracks, legendary sets and infamous parties at The End.

Twisted @ The Fridge

This year has seen them tour the world with their new album, ‘Filthy House for Dirty Stopouts’, taking in Europe, Australia and Japan. Now they’re back in the UK, ready to clean up at Brixton’s Fridge on July 1st.

Joining forces with party maestros Twisted, Riot! are about to remind London why they’re the ultimate kings of the dance scene. I caught up with Ed and Ben and put them head to head to provide a riot of their own . . .

Ed to BK

BK

Ed: Are you going to cause a Riot! on the dance floor at The Fridge then?

BK: This feels like the homecoming gig for some reason. We’ve spent all year putting together and promoting the album and as we’re on target to sell out I think Twisted Riot! will be a celebration for me. You have been warned!

Ed: We’ve been working together on Riot! Records for the past two years now. What’s been your personal highlight?

BK: I think when I looked at a finished copy of the album and saw just how broad a selection of styles and talent was represented it hit home just how much we’ve achieved in a really short space of time. Currently no other label in the UK covers the range of dancefloor styles as us. It really feels like the early days of Nukleuz with big name producers and djs dropping us a line to offer tracks and collaborations. Having already been to the top once, the path is a lot clearer now.

Ed: We’ve been all over the world with the Riot! presents Filthy House For Dirty Stopouts tour. Are you planning on doing something a little extra special for the home crowd in London?

BK: Two weeks ago I played a Riot! party in Jakarta with Thrillseekers and Kai Tracid. Our logo was all over the 15,000 capacity stage and it was awesome to feel like we are achieving our goal. Back to Brixton and I’m going to be looking at putting together the best show that I can, that’ll be the springboard for the next amazing six months of 2006. It’ll be special because the home crowd are the most up for it on the planet and they will love the sounds…

Ed: Do you miss playing at The End?

BK: Sure do! However, after 4 years of routine it’s nice to have a period where we are taking the show on the road and every party is different. The sheer amount of hard work during the week on the records means that our focus had to change this year but putting on parties is in our blood and we’ll be back — just maybe in 2007.

Ed: What will Riot bring to Twisted at The Fridge that other Twisted nights don’t necessarily incorporate?

BK: Twisted parties have always been great events packed with really up for it and enthusiastic people. I think our two vibes will mesh together perfectly to heighten this already excellent experience.

Ed: Tell me a bit about your new EP that you’ve done with Judge Jules . . .

BK: It’s the follow up to ‘Seizure’ which came out last summer. That had a tech trance feel to it and was Jules’ biggest track in Judgment Sunday last year. This time around we’ve produced two tough electro monsters called ‘Rumble’ and ‘I Don’t Know’. I heard him play the latter live at Coloursfest in Scotland on Radio One the other week and it sent the crowd wild! In total I think one of the tracks has been played every week for the last few months with some great reactions. We’re both really happy with how they’ve come out.

Ed: You must feel in awe of me, what with me winning the Party Animal of the Year award at the HDAs?

BK: Pah! I taught you everything you know — without me you’d still be waving glowsticks!

BK to Ed

Ed Real

BK: Twisted presents Riot! — is it going to be a bit of a twisted affair??

Ed: The Fridge is my local, I live about 10 minutes walk away so there’s always the chance that things might get out of hand! Certainly looking forward to working and partying with Hannah, Lisa, Craig and the other lunatics from Twisted towers. The last two parties we worked on, the Hard Dance Awards and Innovate EP Launch, have been storming successes and this is gonna be more of the same.

BK: Twisted have got an excellent reputation for putting on launch nights for labels and albums. Is that what attracted you to partnering up with them for the London gig?

Ed: Nah . . . they are passionate people who really care about throwing great parties in the spiritual home of hard dance. I’m lucky to play in lots of amazing clubs and The Fridge rates up there for me. The crowd are passionate too and so everything goes together to make a night to remember!

BK: Describe our new album, Filthy House For Dirty Stopouts . . .

Ed: It’s the soundtrack to a tough summer of partying and making merry! The album covers the tougher side of dance music; starting off with dirty electro vibes from new artist Black Russian through tones of trance, techno and the hard dance sound that we’ve pioneered, it’s a real soundtrack to the summer of 2006. Any roadtrip, holiday or after party session needs this on the CD player — it’ll see you there and back!

BK: Are you a dirty stopout?

Ed: When I’m in the mood there is no stopping me . . .

BK: An increasing number of producers are incorporating electro in to their dance sound, whether they’re hard, funky or techno dance. What is it about the electro sound that’s so appealing to everybody at the moment?

Ed: Truly the sound of summer 2006 isn’t it? The electro sound is exactly what it says I think and almost any style can have that vibe. It’s nice that there’s a sound that’s got a tougher and more raw feel to it and it really demonstrates just how far away from the mainstream dance is becoming.

BK: Where else are Riot! going to be in the UK this year?

Ed: We’re always very lucky to be invited to come party with other promoters; Riot! by name and Riot! by nature!

Over the summer we are hitting some great clubs in the UK and new promoters are coming on board every week to join in the celebration of the release of our new album. If our launch parties in Japan, Australia and Holland have been anything to go by then watch out world… www.riotinlondon.com has a list of all the places we are visiting.

DJ Magazine currently have a two page feature on Riot! in Amsterdam on page 42 — if you want to see what we have in store for you on the 1st July then check this out!

BK: We’ve been checking out the pictures of you at the 40,000 capacity beach rave Def Qon One — could you tell us about that?

Ed: Definitely the highlight of my career I think! Playing 50 ft in the air on a mega-structure made from old cars and scrap metal to an open air arena with about 8,000 people isn’t something to forget in a hurry. The Dutch promoters are the world leaders for big parties and this event had no flyers or posters printed because it sold out in 7 days — bad for my scrapbook but incredible for the scene.

BK: What’s next for you?

Ed: Riot! is rapidly heading towards its 30th release and over the next few months we have some more genre-defining moments across the harder styles. We have a new series of download only compilation albums that will be available on iTunes and www.trackitdown.net — first up will be two by Andy Farley and Anne Savage over the summer.

The dj diary is great with some brilliant tour dates, Ibiza, and festivals like Global Gathering to come. I think September is heading towards being my busiest month of gigs ever, which is something when I think of how fewer events there are compared to 2001/2002 . . . bring it on!

We’ll be starting a monthly radio show on Q Dance radio in Holland to compliment the one that we do for Ministry of Sound radio. Check www.riotinlondon.com for info.

BK: Do you love me?

Ed: You’re very lucky that I have enough love for everyone right now!

We know you’ve missed it, but never fear Riot! is back.

After a short UK Sabbatical the party with a reputation for high-tech music and a debauched personality touches down in the Capital for a one off humdinger of a party; and you’re all invited. Part of its ‘Filthy House for Dirty Stop-Outs’ DEBUT ALBUM WORLD TOUR the feisty gig has already blasted down in AUSTRALIA, TOYKO, AMSTERDAM, DUBAI and IRELAND. Leading the charge at newly redecorated FRIDGE will be RIOT! head-honcho ED REAL, who’ll be whipping the die-hard fans into a frenzy, with the same brand of hard beats that used to send the crowd into a tizzy, at The End’s legendary Sunday evening Riot! shindigs.

BK worshipers are in for a treat as the A-LISTER will be showcasing one of his incredible and very rare LIVE performances.

F.H.F.D.O, also the slogan for Riot!, is a double-compilation mixed by ED REAL and BK featuring over 30 of the very best of Riot! anthems; all squeezed together with a healthy influx of juicy new tunes. Released on RIOT! RECORDINGS this summer smasher features original tracks from the likes of Judge Jules, BK and Lisa Lashes giving the listener a snapshot of what’s happening at the tougher parties around the world.

Representing the TWISTED massive and giving you some uplifting hard trance sounds will be resident, TREVOR MCLACHLAN. He’ll be joined by a trio of production young-guns in the form of Addiction Label Manager, and Addiction resident OLLY PERRIS, P.H.A.T.T and Norwegian Production duo ADRENALINE DEPARTMENT; who’ll be making their London debut. Summit regular JASON BLAYDE completes the main arena line-up.
