Kissdafunk Pacha preview with The Hoxton Whores

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 15-06-06 17:52

The Hoxton Whores are not some questionably clad ladies of the night you pass as you stumble out of the Tea Bar in Shoreditch. They are in fact a house dj production duo who together have been crafting and playing tracks for clubland since the dawn of dance.

Individually known as Gary Dedman and Kevin Andrews, the E2 based house wenches got together five years ago, setting up a studio in the infamous Brick Lane. Since then they have been something of a fixture on the house scene, plying their wares everywhere from gritty secret warehouse parties, to The Cross, and travelling to countries as culturally diverse as Helsinki to Egypt. In fact, you’d be hard tasked to find a club where at least one of the boys hadn’t not strutted their stuff.

Want to know what they sound like? Well think about a filthy bass line with an uplifting melody or vocal and you’ll get the idea. Adhering to this musical gist the guys always take on a punishing release schedule regularly spawning notable releases. For example, take their recent hit ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ currently earmarked for the Napster tv ad in UK and US.

But even after many years in the business, 2006 is looking like being the duo’s best yet. If you’re intrigued to know more you can hear them play at Kissdafunk’s London Pacha debut on 30th June. In the meantime, hear what Gary has to say.

How is it going? What have you both been up to recently?

Both of us have been very busy in the studio doing remixes over the past few months. We’ve been doing some remixes for Apollo, Positive and Ministry. We’ve also got lots of new original tracks on the go.

You’re both been in music industry for about 15 years but hooked up as the Hoxton Whores in 2002. What made you decide to do this?

Just a name that fitted at the time. We also have a few more names under our belt which we release under including Disco Darlings, Flaunt-It Djs, X-one and Stereo Scum to name a few.

Describe your sound for those who’ve never been treated to the Whores experience.

Funky, dirty and uplifting.

Do you enjoy playing a duo; or can it sometime cause problems?

Yeah it’s great. Despite being together for years, to this day we’ve never planned a set. Every one is different. We buzz off each other and enjoy the result. Though we can sometimes get messy behind there.

You’re playing for Kissdafunk Pacha on 30th June; but you’ve now played for the party quite a few times. How did you first discover it?

I have heard of the legendary night for a while, but got involved playing after doing a track with Rob Tissera, where we reworked the classic club anthem ‘Promised Land’.

Last year your collaboration with Rob Tissera, ‘Promised Land’, did very well. Do you have any new plans for tracks with him?

Yeah, we would love to come up with a follow-up.

Everyone always has an opinion on club land today and how it’s fairing. What are your thoughts. Do you think there are plenty more years in it yet?

In twenty years of clubbing it seems to have gone from strength to strength.

Will you get to play in Ibiza this year?

Yes definitely. We’re on the island a few times this year

Let’s get to know you better with some fun questions:

If you wrote an autobiography what would you call it?

Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Watching Corrie!

Where is your favourite place in the world?

My home.

Who was your last text message from?

My bit on the side.

What’s your favourite gadget?

My PSP.

Over the past two years the Leeds based house night Kissdafunk has whipped up a frenzy in the North whilst establishing itself as one of the most effervescent house nights in the land; and recently voted a top 50 club in the world in a recent DJ Mag poll. Each month its lively parties are bursting at the seams with its dedicated fan base who just
can’t resist the incredible energy of the KDF DJs. Its rafter raising vibe has also traveled to Ibiza and Dubai and been pumped over the airwaves during live broadcasts on BBC Radio 1 and Galaxy.

Now it is finally bringing its mad-capped brand of glammed-up house mayhem to the Capital. Where better than the sumptuous surroundings of Pacha, as Smoke presents Kissdafunk.

Leading the charge on Friday 30th June is Miami heavy hitter Robbie Rivera with a rare UK appearance. You don’t get much bigger than Robbie when it comes to international house producers and his vocal track ‘Your Mistake’ was one of the largest tunes at the 2006 Miami World Music Conference and is now on course to be a sizzling summer anthem. So be prepared for a rollercoaster ride of the most upfront tunage infused with a healthy dash of glorious Florida sunshine.

No Kissdafunk would be quite the same without its utterly fabulous team of residents as these guys are the very reason Kissdafunk has made its mark. The KDF King Rob Tissera will mix it up in his own unmistakeable style alongside BBC Radio 1’s The Trophy Twins, Pacha favourites The Hoxton Whores and man of the moment Filthy Rich whose latest track ‘It’s Like That’ on UMM has been riding high in the buzz chart over the last month.

Fancy a bit of dirty funky, electro grooves infused with a minimal twist? Then shimmy into room two where Gavin Herlihy, KDF’s very own Filthy Rich and London favorite Ben Dela-Peña will give you a taste of the darker side.

If the surroundings of Pacha weren’t enough, then the famous
Kissdafunk Girls (aka Carly’s Angels) will also be on hand to broaden your smile and add to your visual pleasure. You’ve seen in them in the press now it’s your chance to party with them in London.
