The return of Tribal — talking techno with James “Sterling” Moss

Reported by Steve Milton / Submitted 13-06-06 16:16

Many, many moons ago, longer than I really care to remember, I had a night out at The Mass which was to turn out to be one of those defining events we all seem to have in our clubbing careers. I made friends on that night I still have to this day and along with those friends came my first experience of someone who I would now consider to be one of the most technically gifted djs out there.

Now I’m a cynical old sort and generally features that lay claim to that kind of thing are usually taken with a pinch of salt, but having witnessed first hand the ability and downright ease in which the skills are demonstrated, I have to say, I’m continually blown away. So without further ado I introduce to you James “Sterling” Moss, the driving force behind the re-launch of Tribal together with Tony Heward, and technical genius on decks, effects and anything else you care to mention.

So then Mr Moss, it’s been a while. How have you been keeping yourself off the streets and out of trouble?

Sterling: Lots has been happening — gigging all over, most notably just back from a 3 day Harley Davidson festival in Portugal — bikers like dance!! I’ve been busy working on my label Racetrax, getting the latest release with Lab4 ready which is an absolute belter, working on Ableton developing a hybrid dj/live set for later in the year, and of course cranking the machinery back into action for Tribal to make itself known once again in the London club scene.

It’s been a long time since the old Tribal, what made you resurrect the event after all this time and do you think the capital can take another promotion?

Sterling: Tony and myself had never thought that we had ended the party, even though four years passed we always planned and threatened the return of Tribal and here we are back again. We never intended the stop the party first time around but were victims of circumstance and so it was to be, we had to go and do our own thing to get back to a point where the time was right, and now everything has come into alignment.

Yes, I think the capital can take another promotion because as before, we are trying to do something different, and in a scene where genres can become boring through lack of inventiveness, I think new and innovative ideas breathe life back into a scene.

Many have said that the saturation of hard dance promotions in London will be of detriment to the scene as a whole, what do you think you’re going to be doing different to keep things fresh and avoid stagnation?

Sterling: Our policy was always to take the best djs from their respective genres and give them the chance to play together to create a sound between them over the course of a night. Take some of your top end harder artists: Lab4, Chris Liberator, Andy Farley, Dave The Drummer — performers like this I wanted to see play off each other, to see how it would influence their respective sounds rather than have one room of hard house/trance and one room of techno. I always found that the challenge presented to the djs and acts elevated their game and forced them to step outside their comfort zone of playing with the same people week in week out, so the sets became more dynamic and interesting to accommodate this. I think this is the key to keeping the music policy fresh, throw down the gauntlet and see what happens in the mix. Coupling this with Tribal Tony’s unique décor, it sets a scene for something a little different for London where all the various social/musical tribes unite, under the banner of Tribal.

You’re using Hidden as the venue, a fairly cosy place considering the line-up and potential for crowd pulling. What was the thinking behind that?

Sterling: A really like the intimacy of Hidden for an event that leans with a techy edge, as we can stray away from the djs thinking they have to cater to a big room crowd where only the biggest commercial anthems will do — we’re more about letting the djs have a bit of fun and playing stuff they might not usually get the chance to play, and I think a venue the size of Hidden won’t inhibit that. Coupling this with being able to see a dj of Yoji’s stature up close and personal should also add to the intensity of the event — you’ll share more of the emotion with the artist, as they’re not unreachable and untouchable on a big stage, they are right there in front of you next to the dance floor, soaking up the vibes and being able to react accordingly.

OK following on from that I understand Tribal will have a new look with décor to match. Do you think décor plays a major role in creating an atmosphere or vibe for an event and how did the creation of this new look come about?

Sterling: The décor produced for Tribal is fundamental to the core of the party as it has been lovingly produced by Tony specifically for the events over a number of years, and creates a unique angle to the events, as it’s all themed around elements of tribalism. From his war shields and roman flame columns to his natural wood tables that spend two years in the making, we have a highly impressive array of adornments that are specific to a Tribal party. Anyone who came to our parties at Mass would remember the wall of flowers, mushroom seats, palm trees and animal prints in the second room. This is a movement on from that, still paying tribute to the organic but with a few more twists.

OK let’s get on to the important part; the music. The line-up looks pretty impressive, with Yoji Biomehanika, Adam (Lab4) and HarderFaster favourite Ed Real all playing, as well as yourself of course. Who did you bribe this time to get them to play for you?

Sterling: I’ve been very fortunate to have worked extensively with these guys over the years, specifically with Yoji and Adam (having remixed for Yoji’s Hellhouse label as well as writing the latest Racetrax release together with Lab4), but of course as well as having Ed and Lab4 play for us when we were doing parties at The Mass. I guess it’s good to have like-minded people around and it’s second nature for us to all be on a line-up together considering we all played at the 04:04:04 Laboratory event at Shepherds Bush Empire. Having also played with Yoji and Adam at Womb in Tokyo for Yoji’s GIGA event, we know how to work off each other, and the Japanese promoter Kenji won’t be around to water down my beer for this one!

We’re used to seeing Yoji in front of crowds of thousands playing a real combination of hard trance, hard house and hard style, but as this will be primarily a techno influenced event it’ll be a departure from the norm for him, so what can we expect from the extrovert Japanese dj this time around?

Sterling: Anyone who has seen Yoji play will know he always inserts a few techno crackers into the mix — usually high octane interesting tracks that are hard to come by and fit well with the other styles he plays. I asked him if he would be interested in playing a full set of this stuff and was lucky enough to get a positive reaction out of him for the event. This is a world-wide exclusive for him to be playing a full set of this style, which he describes as ‘Homono’ — a sound that can be found in the beats of Yoji’s own ‘The Rain’ or in the energetic buzz of Klitzing’s ‘Videos Kill The DJ’.

I think most people with an interest in techno or even hard dance for that matter will have witnessed at some time your abilities with 3 decks and a 909, will you be heading down that route once more for your set and how, once you’ve pushed djing to such levels do you continue to remain fresh and innovative?

Sterling: Of course I’ll be bringing out the full works with me for June 16th — multiple dex/cds, FX machines and my trusty rhythm composer. Once I’ve clocked the size and space of the Hidden dj booth I’ll be able to build on the set-up with extra pieces of kit over the next few events, providing space and size allow. The next step for me is to integrate Ableton Live into the my set, which I want as an addition to my existing equipment rather than a stand alone live performance platform, as I want to retain the spontaneity of my dj sets even through the live segments that I’m looking to incorporate into the mix.

Also new and interesting music — not everything pricks my ears up these days so I’m in the fortunate position of being able to produce music that I want to play, thereby having music made to measure for events. Coupling this with an extensive record collection that I can pillage if I need a couple of classics to throw in — sometimes you need to go back before you can go forward.

So the main room we all know about music wise, what else will be on offer in room 2?

Sterling: Zeon, our original second room resident from our first time around is looking after that room, and has brought in renowned dj Kristian from Chichime under his KV name playing anything from prog house and electro house to breaks. Alongside Kristian, Yeron from Israel (famed for his electro and minimal outfit Off the Record) will be throwing down some great grooves, which will provide a perfect alternative to the intensity of Room 1.

Your label Racetrax’s release number 10 is due shortly, a collaboration with Lab4. Now we know your relationship with them, was it inevitable that collaboration would result and what can we expect style wise?

Sterling: I’ve known the boys for quite a few years now, and worked closely with them on their fantastic Laboratory parties as well as admiring the musical integrity they’ve had all the way through their career. I don’t know if a collaboration was ‘inevitable’ specifically as everyone has different ways of working, so you never know if someone would invite you into their private creative environment, but fortunately for me and Racetrax the boys were interested in the collab and the sessions went great providing me a corker for my tenth release. Energetic electro influenced techno harder dancer stuff on the A side, heads down techno grinder on the B side with a little trickery to boot.

OK moving on to a personal level now, what’s next for both yourself and in fact the continuation of Tribal?

Sterling: I’m doing everything I can at the moment to get things back on the road for Tribal, with some amazing line-ups in the making for the following events. The décor will be evolving as we go along, as will my dj set up, so we allow the flow and growth of the parties to be as organic as the atmosphere and energy we are trying to create. After June 16th our next event will be August 18th — keep your eyes open, exciting stuff to come!

Tribal — It’s The Reason We’re Here

Good luck for the night Sterling and thanks for your time.

And that seems to bring everything nicely to an end. If you’re a bit of a techno head then I’m sure you’ll agree it’s certainly an event to be taken seriously considering what’s on offer. But for those of you that aren’t maybe you should try something different as I have no doubt that the return of Tribal can only be a good thing for the diversity of music styles currently on offer in London.

See you on the dancefloor.
