Wildchild interview with Yoji Biomehanika

Reported by Wild Angel / Submitted 10-06-06 14:30

Yoji Biomehanika is an undisputed star of the scene. Rock star, dj superstar, fashion icon, uber-cool dude — whichever way you want to put it, he is!

With limited appearances in the UK, it’s always a bit special when he’s billed to play London . . . let alone Ibiza! So imagine a double whammy special of the most amazing kind . . . yes, that’s right, Wildchild not only have him headlining their Ibiza event @ Space, but they’ve also locked him down for the return to their beloved Heaven in July!

Read on for Yoji’s low down on both events, Space, Heaven, summer and what he thinks of good old Blighty!

Hi Yoji, firstly how are you?!

I am fine. thank you.

Are you getting in the mood for summer yet? It’s nearly here you know!

Yes I feel the approach and am looking forward to it.

Well, with it fast approaching, everyone’s getting set for one thing . . . yes, Ibiza! Are you excited about getting out there this year?

I am excited to play for Wildchild @ Space. It’s my only island appearance which makes it even more special!

You will be making your debut appearance for Wildchild when you headline their Reach For The Sky Part 1 event @ Space in Ibiza on 19 June. What have you heard about Wildchild and what are you most looking forward to about the event?

I have heard bad things about Wildchild . . . just kidding! Only good things and I’m looking forward to it. Space is also a venue which I am really interested to see and play at.

The event is definitely going to be one of the biggest things happening on the island this year, and with you heading it up, it’s set to be a stormer!! What can we expect from your set, and can we have any sneak peaks into what you’ll be playing?

Its difficult to speak about my set, to express music through words, but I will definitely be preparing something special for this very special show.

Space is one of Ibiza’s best and most loved clubbing meccas but unfortunately trance and hard dance djs rarely get a chance to play there. What will gracing the hallowed decks at Space mean to you?

I agree, that’s why as I mentioned above I look forward to it. A venue not used to trance and hard dance yet with quite a good reputation is interesting to explore with our sound. Maybe they’ll have more after this show!

July will see you return to Wildchild to headline the second leg of their double feature Reach For The Sky Part 2 @ Heaven in London on 7 July. Apart from playing different records, how will your set differ from Ibiza?

Maybe the circumstances of events affect me in many ways.

For example, at Ibiza, the atmosphere of happiness that the island itself generates makes me perform a fun-like set.

On the contrary, the crowds of London will concentrate deeply on the music itself, so my set will be more serious.

Reports say that Heaven is the favourite London club of Tiesto and Paul van Dyk and Paul Oakenfold even started one of his first ever events there. What are your thoughts on the venue?

I have played at Heaven twice, and I think it is a very cool venue.

With the venue spanning over 5 arenas and over 50 djs gracing the decks, will there be anyone you’ll be checking out . . . or is it a flight straight back home to Japan?

You are right. I have to return to a studio in Japan immediately.

Yoji branded clothing, accessories, CDs and DVDs have exploded massively, not only in Japan, but all over the world. Even world renowned watch specialists, Seiko, have specially designed a Yoji watch! If you could have anything designed in your honour, what would it be?

Cup Noodles. They are just like pot noodles in UK. After clubbing, you get hungry, don't you?

You have released many successful records through your Hellhouse label since its launch. What has been your favourite release and which ones do you still play the most?

Without thinking of sales, I like ‘Never End’, and ‘Samurai’, too. Both of them I’ve kept playing.

What are your biggest influences when you are producing music and how do you feel it has changed over the years?

I am always looking for a new surprise.

Even if it is totally wieird for people, it will become beautiful when it passes some time. I do not really know what has been affecting me, and how I have been changing. It just flows.

You have also had many successful compilation album releases, such as Goodgreef Album 3 with Alex Kidd and Music for a Harder Generation Vol. 2 from Tidy. What are your plans for any future mix albums?

I have some plans. What had already decided is a mix album of the party, Pharmacy in Australia, around summer.

Well, everyone at Wildchild Towers is very excited about having you headline not only one but two of their events, so thank you for your time and look forward to seeing you in Ibiza & London!!!

I do am looking forward to them! Thank you.

Thanks Yoji!
