Analog Pussy: the HarderFaster interview Reported by TEK-DJ Management / Submitted 06-05-06 16:12 Located in Germany, Analog Pussy have gone from strength to strength and are now recognised world-wide for their sheer energy and musical prowess. With three albums already under their belts, not forgetting their remix album, ‘Future’, it seems about time, for the very first time, that Analog Pussy have their say, exclusively for HarderFaster! No, it’s not old fashioned porn, it’s psy trance, brought to you by Jiga and Jinno who are Analog Pussy! Jiga and Jinno, many thanks for you time to answer a few questions for the HarderFaster readers. So how did the whole Analog Pussy concept start for you both? Jinno: One day the phone rang... and Jiga introduced herself, I didn’t know what she wanted. Jiga: I was looking for somebody with lots of equipment, I had one synth and I was broke. Someone told me about an eccentric guy who owns some fat analog synths. Jinno: We talked on the phone for 3 months without seeing each other. She played me her music, I played her my music and then we said: “why don’t we meet!” Jiga: Jinno came to my place, and the rest is history... Jinno: It was hard in the beginning; we had no money for rent or food. Jiga: Jinno stayed at his parent’s house and I worked as a cleaner in old people’s houses, to buy a studio recording system. That was the time Analog Pussy was born. How would you both define the sound of Analog Pussy? Jinno: The style changes from album to album. Still, all our albums have the Analog Pussy touch. ‘Psycho Bitch from Hell’, our first album, was pure melodic Goa trance. ‘Underground’, the album following it, was dark progressive trance. Jiga: ‘Trance N Roll’ — our third album — sounds like a jam session between psy trance, Deep Purple, Bob Marley and the Sex Pistols. Jinno: In general our music is coming from one direction, which is trance. What we tend to do is to experiment and explore the basic trance elements with other dance music styles or even with other kinds of music… the results are varied and sometimes even surprising for us. How did you become to be involved with trance music and psy trance? Jiga: When you grow up in Israel, you don’t choose trance. Trance chooses you... it is being played in kiosks, shops and even on the kids’ TV channel, so it comes naturally. Jinno: When I was a teenager I got a synthesizer from a friend, then I bought one and soon I was experimenting for hours with them with all sorts of home made techniques. Back then trance didn’t exist…. It was the days of new wave and all those big reverbs. I wanted to get the most from the equipment I had, so I did some crazy tests with the gear. I didn’t know what I was doing, After some time those deep punchy bass drums and bass lines just came together into something solid and got names like ‘techno’ and ‘trance’. Jiga: I was a bass player in punk and metal bands. I never got along with the drummers and always told them what and how to play. It got on their nerves. One day one drummer said, “why don’t you get a drum machine and program it to do what you want???” And that’s exactly what I did. I bought a cheap synthesizer with crappy sounds and I could program all the tunes I had in my head. That was my first step to producing a track. What equipment do you use to produce with and what is your favourite piece of production gadgetry? Jinno: It divides to three groups: the hardware/synthesizer group, like Virus, Moog, MS10, Poly6 etc.; the software group, like Reaktor, Kontakt, Reason, various plug-in Synths and Cubase, and the live group: cello, bass, guitars and vocals. Jiga: My favourite synthesizer is the Moog Rogue. It was the first time we bought a piece of equipment together and it cost me 100 hours of wiping tables in a crummy restaurant. You have released three albums to date, ‘Psycho Bitch From Hell’, ‘Underground’ and then ‘Trance N Roll’. What has been your favourite album produced and what album reflects your live sets? Jinno: Our favourite album is our latest — ‘Trance N Roll’. There was a lot of searching and experimenting in this album. We were coming from computer-production so we didn’t know how to handle live equipment like guitars and vocals. We had to find our own ways to make the best recordings and sometimes we came up with bizarre ways like recording vocals with 3 microphones, or connecting a small pickup mic to a cello in order to record it. Jiga: In our live shows we play some trax from our older albums, but the heart of the show is ‘Trance N Roll’. It’s a lot of fun running on stage with a bass guitar and sometimes we add another guitarist to play with us. ‘Trance N Roll’ is dirty, hot and physical. Injecting hard rock into our trance show allows us to get wilder on stage. ‘Future’ received major interest with regard to remix work, how did it make you feel that so many wanted to remix this one track of yours and what was the final outcome with the remixes? Jiga: I was quite surprised with the hysteria around the track ‘Future’, not only from the audience but from other artists as well. I think it has to do with the lyrics “We are the world, we are the future” because it’s true to most of the people who listen to electronic music. We got many requests to remix this track and ended up with 13 remixes. We released them as a remixes album (‘Future — The Remixes’). Jinno & Jiga You don’t just run Analog Pussy, you also run AP Records www.ap-records.com Do you find it better for your selves to run every thing ‘in house’, giving you more independence over all? Jinno: We started AP Records 4years ago, mainly for releasing our own Analog Pussy music. We didn’t want a boss on our heads, telling us that bass drum is wrong or we need to use this art for the album cover. We had our own ideas about what we want to do. Later on we released various artists compilations and full albums as well. It seems more honest and real when artists are releasing other artists music. We know exactly how they feel and what they think and we don’t act as their bosses, we don’t pretend we know better than they do. So our artists feel more comfortable with us. Jiga: Having our own record label was one of the best things we did. Not only did it give us freedom and independence, it also opened our eyes to the music business side of things. Until then, our heads was in music production only. Now we realize how things work, we understand contracts, sales, promotion. It’s important for every musician to understand business as well or they won’t be able to survive. Analog Pussy has taken you round the world with your live performances, what has been your most memorable event and country played so far? Jinno: Our best party was in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We played on the beach for 5,000 people. It was the first serious psy party there, people didn’t know what to expect and this is why it was so great. There was a naïve innocent feeling in the air. I saw people discovering psychedelic trance for the first time and I rediscovered it through them. Jiga : The best performance I ever had was the first one. There were 20 people there, I was not paid, the stage was crooked and the amount of adrenalin in my blood could be enough to make an army march. When it was over I said to Jinno — there will never be anything like this ever again. Many have not had the privilege to see your show. What can the clubber expect to see at an Analog Pussy show? Jinno: A lot is happening on the stage, it’s like an action movie. We have 2 laptops on stage, one for audio samples and effects and one for playing software synthesizers. Jiga plays live bass guitar and synths and I play synths and I’m in charge of the mixing console. Sometimes if we can get the equipment, we add a live cello and midi drum pad. You have another album in the making. What is this and when are you looking at releasing this album? Jinno: We are taking the next album into the song composition without getting too cheesy or commercial about it. It is going to be very psychedelic with more live instruments used in unconventional way. If you’re into conventional psy trance this album will not be for you. But people who like different unconventional kinds of trance will dig this album. Jiga: We find we have a lot to say and we want to say it with words. Sure, you can convey feelings and emotions with sounds alone. But there are stories that pure sounds cannot tell. And we have some stories to tell…!!! The UK is one country you would love to play at more often, are you looking forward to seeing more of the UK soon? Jinno: We would like to play in the UK, I think our music will be received well there. Hopefully we’ll have dates there in the near future. Jiga: We played in Leeds some years ago and it was unbelievably nuts, these people were absolutely loud and happy. There was another time we played in York in a fancy ballroom with red carpets and crystal chandeliers as a deco. With trance music blasting in that hall it was a killer combination. I learned from his story how to get my high from music only and skip the bad habits. Jinno: Jiga What is your favourite colour? Jiga: Red Jinno: Not sure right now What is your favourite country?
