60 seconds with Bob Sinclar

Reported by Stix / Submitted 29-03-06 18:30

Bob Sinclar is not only one of house music’s sexiest stars, but he’s also one of the globe’s biggest global icons and most consistent DJ/producers. Having sold over 1 million copies world-wide of last summer’s smash hit ‘Love Generation’, he’s set to follow that trend this year with the imminent release of ‘World, Hold On’ — the next soon-to-be massive hit from the French hero — plus there’s a new studio album to watch out for too.

Looking ahead to Saturday night, a Parisian storm is set to blow up big time in the capital, as Turnmills proudly presents a beautiful new adventure through the mind and soul of house music’s most dashing star. Prepare to enter the wonderful Disco-tech of Bob Sinclar; a chic and stylish new creation, housed exclusively at Turnmills throughout 2006.

For this weekend’s special launch party, Monsieur Sinclar will be joined in the hot seat by Gallic pal and Defected superstar Martin Solveig, with Kitsune Records — France’s coolest underground label dancing to an altogether different house beat in the intimate T2, courtesy of very special guests Digitalism, Gildas & Masaya and Spencer Parker.

2005 was quite a year, what was your personal highlight?

Sincerely, the recording sessions of ‘Love Generation’ is gonna be stuck in my heart all my life — it’s like I did music to expect this moment... full of love, spirituality and positive energy. When you believe in something, everything can happen.

’Love Generation’ has become a huge hit for you across the globe. Where did you get the inspiration from for the track and how did you meet Gary Pine?

I just come up with the instrumental in NYC but first destined it to be a track for the ending of my forthcoming album. I couldn’t imagine doing a club track with this kind of nostalgic emotion but I had so much feeling on the track, so I decided to produce it as a club track as a cooking chef. I met him (Gary Pine) in NYC in Dave Darlington Studio. I used to cast artists for my songs and I was lucky Gary was in town just for 3 days between gigs with the Wailers. I found an interesting fusion between reggae flava and my music, nobody did it before.

’Love Generation’ is almost the perfect song for the summer. Are you yourself a summer person?

I am a very positive person and I hate to have dark people around me. For the music it’s the same, I want to see smile on the people face when I play my music...

Now that the winter months are upon us, does that mean you’ll be spending more time in the studio — out of the cold?!

My new album is ready. I spent 1 year in studio to make this happen. It’s a nice album with a house production but also pleasant to listen at home... I had also to be faithful to the colour of ‘Love Generation’, a good combination between club production and fresh summer ideas, a fusion of different bluesy atmospheres. I hope the people will like it...

‘World, Hold On’ is my new single featuring Steve Edwards, a fantastic lead singer. A remix package is also ready featuring Axwell, David Guetta and Wally Lopez.

What track from your back catalogue are you most proud of?

I’ve produced all types of music on Yellow Productions, my own label, for 12 years now, like Brazilian music with Tom & Joy, Salomé de Bahia. I feel good about house music and to choose one track it’s almost impossible... ‘Love Generation’ will stay very special in my heart.

Do you have any plans to work on a new Africanism project this year?

Of course I start already to collect new titles. I will start as usual by collecting a series of 12” inch with different artists and I will mix the album for the Summer 2007.

Will the album be in keeping with ‘Love Generation’ or will it feature a whole variety of different musical forms and genres?

It’s going to be a flower power album full of energy, positive vibrations, acoustic guitar and block flava in many ways. It’s hard to follow up ‘Love Generation’ because I did this track by accident and now I have to find a real concept around this music anyway. I like challenges.

This year will see you join the Turnmills gang with a 4 date residency. Are you looking to this new challenge?

It’s always a good challenge to play at Turnmills, a lot of big DJs play there so you have to prove yourself and be a good DJ.

Why did you choose Turnmills?

Especially for the atmosphere and the fantastic crowd... it’s like everybody knows me and comes to see me play. I can play what I want, the people expect just to spend a good time and they have a lot of respect for the guest music.

What does Turnmills offer that other London clubs don’t?

Every club is different in London and I think all the people can find what they want... this is the big thing in London...

I am really sensible about a special atmosphere and I think Turnmills has what I want. A good mix of people come with the Glamour attitude... it’s a ‘Club’ with a big C, nothing is ‘Chi-Chi Fou-Fou’ like in Paris. The people come to have fun. The DJ booth is fantastic and the sound system is amazing... I can wait to come back.

How important is it for a DJ to have a base in London to perform from?

For a DJ it’s very important to play in London for the image and the notoriety. It’s like Ibiza… your club scene is really strong, that’s why a residency is a nice opportunity and a great honour.

I understand that there’s going to be plenty of French music on offer at your nights. How do you think the London crowd will respond to this?

It’s nice to propose to the people something different, a real French night and not just only one DJ. They will discover different style of French house music and hip hop in the small room... I hope the London crowd will be exited about it...

Are you excited about bringing a Gallic flavour to London?

It’s always very exiting to play in London, every time is a new challenge.

DMX you seem to be a hater of talent. Always best not to say anything at all. After you sell a million records than you should speak.
Rock on Bob.
