One Life - house music unites for charity

Reported by benz & Tiffany / Submitted 22-03-06 22:29

Most of us don’t realise how lucky we are. It’s pretty hard to comprehend what it must be like to be afflicted by a severe mental or physical impairment, let alone a whole catalogue of them.

This Saturday, London’s clubbing community are joining forces to help a young boy whose life is severely compromised by such a list of complications, the causes of which are unclear even to medical experts. All proceeds (and we mean ALL proceeds) from One Life at Hidden are going to the Nathan Bovell Appeal.

Historically HarderFaster members have always been very supportive of charity events and we hope One Life will continue this trend. So if you love house music and want to give a very unfortunate child a helping hand, then please take 5 minutes out of your day and find out what this whole event is about…

Anna & Nathan

Tiffany Bromfield is the driving force behind this event and the whole Appeal campaign. Nathan Bovell is her best friend’s son, and experiencing his plight at first hand was what made her want to try and help out in the best way she could. “I’m just an ordinary girl from North London. I am strictly doing this one off event to raise money for a worthwhile cause. Nathan is not receiving enough help from the NHS to be able to live a more comfortable life. So I decided to organise a party, which escalated into One Life, with 24 of London’s best DJs all giving up their time for free.”

So what exactly is wrong with Nathan I hear you ask? Well how long have you got? His list of afflictions is unbelievably severe and extensive. “Nathan has something wrong with his brain that specialists are currently unable to diagnose. This has left him with severe and multiple disabilities. Some of his problems include: severe epilepsy which can not be controlled, significant visual impairment/blindness, feeding problems, movement disorder and low muscle tone — leaving him unable to move for himself or sit/crawl, scoliosis (curving of the spine), severe developmental delays….”

His condition requires 24 hour care from a variety of specialists, such as a physiotherapist, as well as specialist equipment for postural support and comfort. Unfortunately none of this comes cheap, and with a National Health Service operating well over its budget, Nathan and his family have little hope.“Unfortunately the NHS can not supply all of the equipment he requires and sometimes the waiting lists for these things are so long that Nathan has to go without crucial equipment. Obviously not having this stuff adds a strain on the family as they can not afford to buy the bits he needs. All special needs equipment is really expensive - for example a bath seat costs approx £550, a buggy costs £2,500. As Nathan’s needs are severe and complex there are going to be constant demands for new equipment… sensory stuff to keep him aware of his surroundings and adaptations to houses and cars to accommodate wheelchairs and so on.”

One of the most frightening things about the whole situation is the fact that Nathan’s condition remains undiagnosed. The whole medical profession remains without an answer. Not having an understanding of a condition as severe as this makes one feel rather helpless — if they can beat cancer and heart disease, why don’t they know what’s causing all these problems? Until any further progress is made, the best that can be done is to make Nathan’s living conditions as manageable and comfortable as possible.

Tiffany

The event itself is a 3-room extravaganza of all shades of house music, featuring 25 of London’s hottest DJs. The whole thing happened by accident really, as Tiffany explains. “To be honest I didn’t plan on doing this as a club night. I decided to write a message on a message board about Nathan’s condition and asked people if they could help by donating. The response was unbelievable and a lot of people suggested doing a club night to raise money… so I thought why not! But I truly didn’t expect it to turn into something so big. But we are looking to raise a lot of cash at this event!”

As it was proven with the amazing response to humanitarian crises such as the Tsunami tragedy, clubbing and charity seem to make very good bedfellows. “Sometimes it’s nice to give people a wake up call to make them realise that their lives aren’t so bad and there are some people out there that desperately need our help. People go clubbing all the time and spend obscene amounts of money. What could be better than dancing your socks off to some wicked tunes, only paying £10 entrance… AND… helping out a worth while cause in the process?”

So if you are looking for something to do this weekend in a housey vein, please get your disco-ass down to Hidden and help this very worthy cause at the same time as having a wicked night. There’s loads of excellent DJs playing across the whole house spectrum — worldwide superstars Hoxton Whores headline with their big funky sound, Raymondo Rodriguez from afterparty sensations Wrong and Jaded providing some Latin-flavoured rhythms, DJs from the awesome Unknown FM laying down some electro and tech house, and DJs from other wicked parties such as Moochin’, Pushca, Bambina, Brighton Rocks... the list goes on and on! Nathan Bovell’s life is never going to be easy — but with your help it could be a lot more manageable.
