Flashbak reviewed

A flashback is defined officially as “an unexpected recurrence of the effects of a hallucinogenic drug long after its original use”. Translate that into Brixton rave lingo and we get Flashbak: an uplifting recurrence of the effects of bouncy hard house tunes long after they were originally produced and played. This is a place where the music is the drug, forcing our brains to reminisce years of pumping hard bouncy beats and appreciate them as much now as we did then.
Since her birthday party on Saturday 31st October 2003, Stella is one lady that is adamant she will keep this old-skool vibe alive, and judging by the success she has achieved in the past year and a half, it looks like there are many other like minded clubbers that simply like things just as they were ‘back in the day’. It took little persuading to twist my arm and spend the night with the Flashbak crew to see for myself what all the fuss was about, and I certainly wasn’t disappointed!
Warming up the ones and twos was Flashbak’s feisty resident DJ, Janie Mac. Since winning her residency last summer, fighting off some fierce competition, Janie has delivered time and time again, proving her versatility by rotating her set time for every gig and always ending with a full hands-in-the-air dance floor.
As I approached the entrance I could hear the distinct sound of the warm uplifting riff coming from ‘Reincarnations’ by Steve Morley, and sure enough it had everyone in the room smiling and nodding their heads anticipating the night to come. I was immediately greeted by a very smiley Stella who excitedly pointed everyone out to me and proudly showed off the Flashbak décor and their new naughty stall, run by lovelies Techno Bird and Miss AK.
I quickly got into the swing of things aided by the seamless pap-papping of Janie Mac’s mix into ‘Tiptronic’ and decided it was definitely time for a beer.
Next DJ up was Eddie H making his Flashbak debut. Mixing it up with compulsory dancing tunes such as Prime Mover’s ‘Black Dogs’ and Pants + Corset’s ‘Malice in Wonderland’ I found myself drawn to the dance floor which was getting constantly busier.
Following on from Eddie was none other than Brixton legend Roosta. Having spent many a munted Sunday nights at Club 414 I was pretty familiar with this man’s impeccable mixing and spot on tune selection. For some reason I feel uncontrollably compelled to dance when Roosta drops the KY Jelly Babies mix of ‘Access’.
Flipside promoter and resident DJ Flippie was next up and this guy does not mess about. Jogging it in with his tough but energetic hard house he maintained the electric atmosphere that had been built up by the previous DJs, getting a huge crowd reaction as he drops the ‘I Don’t Care’ bootleg that did the rounds a few years back.
The night was rounded off nicely by residents and co-promoters Matt E and Tony K, who know their crowd and know how to tease and play them. Anyone could tell by the ear to ear grin on Stella’s face that she was satisfied with her efforts.
This was the last Flashbak to be held at 3rd Bass as they venture into a their new home @ The Dex club on Coldharbour Lane. They will also be moving from a Friday night Saturday night.
For those that like to keep it bouncy and want to hear a good mix of tunes, old and new, then Flashbak is a highly recommended party. Put the 11th March in your diaries as it’s a triple birthday celebration, including that of resident Janie Mac. Then as from 29th April it will be every last Saturday of month.
