Nick Sentience: breaking the sound barrier at Innovate

Reported by Nicki S & Craig Paxton / Submitted 18-01-06 21:43

People often talk of those who define musical genres. Pioneers in their field who have help to mould and craft a sound which evolved into a whole musical movement.

If you were to pick someone in the area of hard dance then one person who would be at the top of your list would be the undeniably talented Innovate resident Nick Sentience. Where Nick leads, others invariably follow; which has been the case since he broke on to the scene many years ago. With the release last year of his widely acclaimed artist album - 'Universal Language' and rumours of a follow-up in the pipe-line, we managed to drag Nick away from his studio for 5 minutes to answer some questions ahead of his monstor three hour set at Innovate on 21st January.

Happy 2006! I hope you had a smashing Christmas and New Year.

Yeah great thanx, Twisted NYE at The Fridge was amazing. Big shout to all who came.

2005 was a big year; you played in America, Canada, Brazil, Ibiza, Holland, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and off course here in the UK. What was your highlight of 2005?

I would say one of my best experiences was the Extreme/Tidy event at Es Paradis in Ibiza. It was rammed and I felt like I was in a scene form Kevin and Perry! Proper Ibiza superclub style.

Do you have any New Years resolutions?

Yeah loads! I want to try and read more books instead of always watching DVDs, spend more time with family and friends, oh and thrash out more ‘avin it tunes.

At the next Innovate you’re playing a special 3 hour set, which judging by your past performances is going to be something special. Tell us what we can expect and why we can’t afford to miss it.

The thing about this set is it will be showcasing a bunch of new tracks from my next album. I’ve moved into a great new studio near Tower Bridge and it’s really done the trick. I’m working on 2/3 tracks a week and buzzing big time, so if you want to hear what I’ve been producing as well as a load of classics and other hot tunes, come on over and party with us!

Your last 3-hour showcase at Innovate in January 2005 was a sell out event. Are you excited this party? What do you prefer 1 1/2hr sets or getting your teeth stuck into 3hrs?

Both are enjoyable. 1/1 hours can be a quick fix, mixing quick and jamming it. But a 3 hour set you get to really go from one point to another, and I think people expect you to span things out a bit more. I think the dancefloor knows to expect a bit of a voyage rather than just tune after tune.

What productions / projects are you working on?

The main project I have underway at the moment is my next album. I’m aiming for completion of that this month, so nearly there now. I’ve also got a couple of EPs on Riot! coming out, plus some remixes of my ‘Universal Language’ tracks in the pipeline on Quality Trax. You can hear some clips of these new tunes on this link www.qualitytrax.net/promo enjoy!

Over the years you have remixed and worked with some of the biggest names in the business: Mauro Picotto, Tim Healy (aka Coburn), John Askew, BK, Storm, Praga Kahn, Andy Farley, Safri Duo, and The Rogue Element, just to name a few. Do you have any juicy collaborations planned in the near future?

I’ve got a date with Mark Sherry from Public Domain next week, also another one with BK, and James Lawson as well. But mostly lots of solo tracks being done.

Innovate at The Fridge

In all you travels and DJ gigs what were the tunes that rocked it the most for you in 2005?

This year big tunes were Psycraft — ‘Computech’, Vinylgroover & The Red Hed’s cover of Felix — ‘Don’t You Want Me’, Edison Factor — ‘Blissed Out’, Sander van Doorn — ‘Bling Bling’ and Mac Zimm’s Remix of ‘Damager’.

What are your 3 all time favourite tunes? Is there any chance we’ll hear these at Innovate?

Prodigy — ‘Speedway’, Leftfield — ‘Space Shanty’, Fluke — ‘Atom Bomb’, and I don’t think I’ll be able to play them in their original format as they are a few years old now and in quite a different production style. Might have to do a cheeky re-edit to play them!

Over the years you have produced hundreds of remixes and original tracks. Do you have a personal favourite?

Innovate

My remix of Storm — ‘Time to Burn’ holds a place for me. I’ve seen plenty of dancefloors jump to that over the years!

The Innovate motto is: Inspire — Create — Innovate. But where do the Innovators get their inspiration? What artists are inspiring you at the moment?

I went to one of the Prodigy gigs at Brixton Academy recently and that really fired me up again. They still rock hard, and put on a great production. Total class. Kind of reminded me of my mission objective. Also a lot of the Hommega productions artists like Xerox and Illumination, X-noise and Astrix stepped up the production standard last year and really got me thinking hard about my own tracks. Respect to those guys!

So what big plans do you have for 2006?

Basically the plan is to put the finishing touches to the album this month and tour it. I want to get back out to all my old favourite places like Australia, Japan, USA, Holland and Ibiza. Also watch out for the Innovate vs Riot party in March, that’s going to kick big time.

Thanks for your time Nick and see you on the dance floor!
