Innovate preview: Brazil’s answer to Fatboy Slim, Vitor Lima

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 12-01-06 14:47

"Brazil is the next Ibiza" is the plaudit which is starting to infiltrate clubland. From dance mags to djs, many are citing the Southern American land to be the future of hedonist holidays. Most of the big names have praised its virtues of incredible crowds, amazing clubs, fab beaches, fantastic home-grown talent and the cheap cost of living. But will it really ever be a threat to the the European clubbing mecca, Ibiza? Who knows? One person who has a good idea is top Brazilian DJ, Vitor Lima.

Crowned by Brazil’s magazine equivalent to Mixmag to be best progressive house DJ for two years running, and alikened to Fatboy Slim, Vitor is about to make his UK debut at Innovate on Saturday 21st January. How lucky are we? He’ll join fellow Brazilian country mate Eduardo Herrera to help transform South London into an centre of hot blooded latino action.

One thing is for sure that once you’ve read the interview and seen this dude play you’ll be hitting the pages of www.expedia.comquicker than a rabbit let loose in a carrot shop.

You are one of the ever growing number of Brazilian djs who is currently making their mark on the European dance scene. Why do you think this is?

After a long period, Brazil is finally in the worldwide music scene. When the big foreign djs starting coming to Brazil, the local djs started to improve their work. But everything is still fresh over here, and this is the main diference about the Brazilian djs: we’ve all got loads of energy to keep the music scene growing. That’s why I think Brazilian djs have a chance in Europe. For us it’s about the music and the crowd, whereas many of the huge European djs are only interested in fame and money.

Your style is to mix things up between techno, house and trance, which has led you to be compared to djs like Fat Boy Slim. Is this style typical of Brazil?

I don’t think it’s a Brazilian thing, it’s personal to me... I really don’t like to have a label or to play only one kind of music. I just try to pick the best techno, progressive, trance and house tunes and mix them together. It might sound nuts but it works really well on the dancefloor.

Many are tipping Brazil as the next Ibiza as a clubbing destination. Do you agree with this view?

Yes, I do! But I think Brazil is much better than Ibiza. The structure of the country can support much more clubbers than Ibiza; the local djs are amazing; and Brazil has thousands more kilometers of beach than the whole of Europe! Please come to Brazil!!! Nobody will ever go back to Ibiza!

If I were to go there on holiday which clubs, and which djs should I check out?

You must go to D-edge in Sao Paulo on a Thursday and enjoy the best progressive night in the country. Then go to South Brazil and spend a weekend, or if possible, a month, in Balneário Camboriú — the truly Brazilian Ibiza. It has beautiful beaches and really great clubs such as Ibiza, Warung and Case. Check-out the local heroes such as Leozinho and Fabricio Peçanha or the great European djs like Layo and Bushwaca, Hernan Cattaneo, Mauro Picotto and others that come to this city every year.

How does it differ from Ibiza?

As I said before, I do believe that Brazil has a much better structure to receive tourists than Ibiza. And of course everything is much, much cheaper than any place in Europe!

What is it about clubbing in Brazil which makes it so great?

The Brazilian crowd is amazing. The vibe and energy of the people is unique. And of course all the most wanted girls and boys are Brazilian.

You’re only 23 , but have played in UK, Ibiza, Brazil and Ayia Napa and you’ve been crowned “Best Progressive DJ” in Brazil. How did you come about this title?

The title was given by the most important magazine in Brazil. Every year the readers choose their favorite djs, clubs and parties. Fortunately I was choosen as the Best Progressive DJ for two years in a row! But I really don’t think that I’m the best prog dj in the country, there’s a lot of talent that deserves to share this title with me.

Have you played in the UK before? What are your thoughts in the UK scene compared to back home?

I’ve never been to the UK. It’s a dream come true. Everything started over there, with the summer of love.... All the DJs are always keen to know what is happening in the UK. It’s a huge pleasure to be part of this history. I think London will be really crazy, cause the people are much more used to electronic music than the Brazilian crowd. I must say a huge thank you to Never Enough Maria, DJ Michael Redina, DJ Ed Real and all my friends that helped me in my first UK gig ever!

I’m told you are also about to launch a new live PA tour. What are you plans for this?

I’m trying to do something diferent... I want to do a set with a real live band, more organic than electronic. I'm doing auditions with musicians and I will probably start this project after July. But my third album will be soon available in Brazilian stores!

You’ve played alongside people such as Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong and John ‘00’ Fleming, Who is your personal DJing hero?

It depends on what mood I am... Lately I’m really looking foward to play alongside Steve Angello (and this will happen in a few months at the Skol Beats Festival in Sao Paulo). In my opinion he’s the best at the moment. But I have really enjoyed meeting Giles Peterson and Laurent Garnier. I can say that these two djs made me see music in a diferent way.
