A world first! Will Paterson reveals all as Frantic teams up with Moondance for a huge free party

And no I don’t mean he’s going to be putting Will Jnr. on display — right here on HarderFaster, Will Paterson promoter of Frantic exclusively reveals hard house club phenomenon Frantic’s plans for 2006 (and beyond), and gives us the inside scoop on his sensational new club Hidden in Vauxhall, South London. Oh and of course there’s the small matter of the never-been-seen-before free party collaboration with old skool party people Moondance this Saturday to talk about!
Most of us are pretty well informed about Frantic, but for those of you who don’t know much about Moondance, let us fill you in briefly. Moondance events have been held since way back in 1995 by a man who goes by the nickname of Funki and have always been about reliving classic moments in rave music history from years gone by. Be it happy hardcore, jungle, breakbeat-filled rave music or classic acid house, Moondance has always been a history lesson in the evolution of dance music. In recent years the events have mostly taken place in venues enshrined with clubbing history, such as Koko (formerly Camden Palace) and SEOne (formerly The Drome). This Saturday provides an unmissable chance to enjoy such classic tunage at the same time as experiencing Frantic’s 21st Century hard house stylings, and all at the ultra low cost of £0! Clearly, this is the only way to stave off those January blues...
Will Paterson and Amanda from Frantic
So Will, what exactly is going down at Hidden this Saturday?
In a world first Frantic is teaming up with the legendary Moondance for an awesome FREE Party this Sat 7th Jan at Hidden in Vauxhall.
Moondance will be bringing their own magic touch to the old skool room, while Frantic will be rocking the other main arena with block rocking hard house and trance! All this and classic, funky and dirty house in the middle arch!
This is truly the party to get 2006 really started!
What was the motivation behind this party?
Funki and I have wanted to do a party together for the last year, but the right opportunity never presented itself. Then when we took over Hidden in October we were looking for a party to start 2006 and this fitted the bill perfectly!
How did you first come into contact with the Moondance crew?
We both used to do loads of events at the grand old Camden Palace! When we used to do Bank Holiday Sunday Afternoons Moondance used to do the evenings so we would come into contact with each other that way.
Moondance is all about classic dance and rave music from days gone by… are there any styles from bygone eras that you are particularly fond of? Aside from old skool jazz of course….
I love loads of guitar bands from the 60s right through to the 90s. I particularly love bands like MC5 and The Stooges and then all the Seattle stuff like Nirvana and Mudhoney.
The event is taking place at Hidden, the club in Vauxhall that you recently took over. Was the decision to move into venue management something that you had been thinking about for a while?
I’d been working on moving over for the last 3 years, but it’s a real challenge to find the right venue at the right deal. I must have looked at 40 different premises until Hidden came on the market.
What new challenges have you faced since entering this area of the club business?
Where do I start! Lol!
It’s been a real rollercoaster ride since October. My business partner is a venue manager with 20 years experience, but it’s still a big challenge running your own venue and particularly a venue that wasn’t working at all well when we took it over.
However it’s been brilliant fun working on it and every day there are new challenges that keep me fresh and hungry for more!
At the moment we are working on redesigning the outdoor courtyard and redoing the toilets. It’s going to look wicked when this next stage of the refurb is complete in March!
The Red Room at Hidden
Which is more stressful — running a venue or promoting an event?
They are both stressful! Lol!
Funnily enough they are quite similar in that the end game in both is attendance. In other words the key task in both jobs is to encourage people to attend the venue or the event.
How do you feel that the first few months have been at Hidden? It definitely seems that the club has made its mark on the London club scene…
On balance I’m pleased with what we have achieved, but feel strongly that the next stage of the refurbishment and the new promoters we have in place for 2006 will put Hidden on a completely new level!
What’s in store at Hidden in the next few months then?
There are three big things going on at Hidden at the moment:
1) Believe
This is our weekly Sunday morning after hours sensation playing only the finest house and dirty house and electro! The week before Xmas Tim Sheridan came down and played and impromptu 3 hour set and had to be almost dragged from the decks at the end as he didn’t want to finish!
2) Summit
We are convinced that Summit is going to make it big in 2006. The boys have so much passion for hard house and trance it’s a certainty that they are going places! Their next party on Friday 3rd February is going to be a real corker with the infamous 123 crew!
3) New house events
Hidden is predominantly a house venue and we have some wicked events line up with the massive FunkinU and PlushDaFunk crews alongside Sat and Sun after hours house events!
Hidden
And what about Frantic this year? There has been talk of a downsizing of the operation?
It’s not so much downsizing as concentrating on bigger and better events, while leaving space to plan a bigger outdoor event for 2007.
We will be running 6 events in 2006 with the first three being:
Timeless Sat 28th Jan — The Renaissance Rooms
This is one of only 2 Timeless events in 2006 with a very special live set of Lab4 playing their legendary ‘Live at Samsara’ album in full!
HHA Sat 25th Feb
There are only 2 HHAs in 2006!
This is our biggest ever HHA line up with so many stars it hurts your eyes!
Transmission Sat 15th April Alexandra Palace
This is the biggie!
10,000 Capacity with new staging and new sound and every single important hard house DJ known to man or woman!
We are then spending much of the year planning an outdoor event for Summer 2007 which is a big undertaking, but one we are determined to make work. There has never been a dedicated underground outdoor event in the Capital with hard house, trance, old skool, hardcore etc. and we hope to change that!
Would you ever pass the running of Frantic on to anyone else or would you rather always be in charge?
Well I already share the running of Frantic with Amanda and work closely with Chloe, Elvis, Zoe and Benz so it’s not a one man band, but no I can’t envisage stepping back completely as I feel so passionately about it that would be a wrench!
Which new and exciting artists are you looking forward to seeing perform at your events this year?
I’m looking forward to Greg Brookman doing his PA at HHA!
I can’t wait for Organ Donors and Kutski to do their first ever b2b at HHA!
The Dutch superstar Fausto is going to rock HHA!
Alongside them I think that Alex Kidd, Cally & Juice, Cally Gage, Little Gem and of course Andy Whitby will be smashing every event they attend in 2006!
Are there any bits of audiovisual technology that you haven’t had the chance to use at Frantic yet? If money was no obstacle…
I’m keen on using the big LCD screens! They have amazing picture quality and light up rooms better than floodlights!
I’d also like to use the massive 30 watt colour laser I’ve seen at Psy Academy! This will be appearing at HHA in Feb!
And finally, have you got any other exciting plans for 2006?
I hope to be doing another massive Frantic vs Storm event in Coalville as the last one was absolutely off the hook!
I’m still looking for the right venue for another rematch between Hardcore Heaven and Frantic!
Lastly the 9th Birthday will be Frantic’s only other date at Koko in 2006 and will take place on August Bank Holiday Sunday 27th. This is going to be beyond massive!
Thanks to Benz and Daf for their photos. http://www.harderfaster.net/?section=photos&username=Daf
