Meet Twisted’s new resident Trevor McLachlan

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 30-12-05 13:49

It’s the start of a bright shiny new year, and for London DJ Trevor McLachlan it’s got off to a dazzling start. A popular fixture on the London scene with regular appearances at Twisted, Friendz and Extreme Euphoria, he’s recent started to engrave his stamp on the London hard dance scene. His efforts have been duly noted, and from 7th January Twisted will welcome Trevor as its new monthly resident — and for someone who once dreamed of playing main room set at the history-steeped venue, this is role he’s about the grab with two hands. The residency announcement only forms part of his reason to celebrate as on 7th January will also be be the offical launch of his first ever track ‘The Voice’. Released on Impact recordings, the uplifting hard-trancer has also been remixed by Phil Reynolds and it’s set to set the Fridge dance floor ablaze which it gets its first offical play out at Twisted’s first party of 2006. I spoke to Trevor, about to go on a snowboarding holiday, to find out his reaction to his new role.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born and bred in Brisbane, Australia. In 1998 I moved to Sydney to further my career in IT, and it was there that I got my first taste of dance music. In 2000 I came to London for a 3 month holiday, found a great job in IT, met my English wife and basically never went home. I got married in France almost 2 years ago now. I didn’t step foot inside a club for the first 6 months I was as here as I just got engulfed in the whole pub culture, then my first taste of a hard house club was Synergy at the Soundshaft. I was instantly hooked and I was soon going to Frantic, Convergence, Fevah, Sunday School and all those great clubs. I met a DJ called Nana, who was an Australian of Dutch descent, and it was her that got me into DJing. She used to be resident at Pickle and played lots of London clubs. I wanted to DJ like her as she had such a presence behind the decks, and her energy was contagious. In the middle of 2002 I bought a set of 1210s and since then haven't looked back.

Twisted was where you played your first main room set, so you’ve kind of become synonymous with the party. Does it hold a special place in your heart?

Yeah Twisted certainly does hold a very special place in my heart! I have been involved with Twisted now for nearly 2 years, and have seen it evolve quite a lot. My first Twisted set was given to by Kate Lynch, who promoted it at the time, and it was also my first main room gig, so I was over the moon with the booking. When I started Djing, it was a dream of mine to play the main room of the Fridge, so that of course was wicked! That was in June 2004 and I played again in November that year. Twisted has supported me immensley, and I’ve played 8 times for them this year, including the birthday in October and NYE. Twisted keeps evolving, and with Twisted Hannah at the helm now, the party is looking extremely exciting for 2006, so watch this space!!

Apart from Twisted where have you played?

I have been resident at a monthly day party called Friendz for 2 years now, which is a wicked trance party at Turnmills T2. If you haven’t been before, get yourself there. It’s got such a wicked vibe!!! I have also been lucky enough to play for events such as Innovate, Extreme Euphoria, Tidy vs Extreme Euphoria, HeatUK and Tilt. I recently played for tidy at The Emporium in Coalville when they did Tidy vs Storm, which was a great experience. Playing out of London is certainly different. I have also played for lots of smaller events, which always do it for me, and have such loyal up for it clubbers. Events like U4RIA, Addiction, Spangulation, Chemical Reaction, Affinity to name but a few.

Are you excited about the residency?

VERY! To be offered a monthly residency for such an awesome event like Twisted is a complete honour. Twisted’s really working hard on making 2006 a year to remember, and I am really looking forward to working with Hannah and the team. There are some exciting changes on the horizon. Bring on 2006!

What difference does a regular residency make to your sets, if any?

As resident I am more involved in the party as a whole, not just my monthly set, so it’s more work in general. We have regular meetings to discuss line ups, programming, and a lot of other aspects of the event, so from that perspective, it’s just more dedication to Twisted. Musically, it doesn’t make a difference to me, as wherever I am playing I put as much thought and effort into my sets, whether I am playing first, last or any set inbetween.

You’re off snowboarding over the Christmas period. How good a boarder are you. Do you ski as well, or do you hate them?

Yeah I’m not too bad. Charlie, my wife, and I spent 6 months in Canada in 2003, and for about 3 of those months lived like bums in the Canadian Rockies snowboarding every day. It was amazing! We haven’t been able to go boarding since that trip, so you have no idea how much we were looking forward to it. And as for the skiers, I don’t mind them at all. I only board because I used to skate and surf when I was younger, so it was a natural progression. Charlie used to ski, but I’ve converted her.

On the snowboarding theme: dance music and ski resorts seemed to becoming increasingly popular. Have you ever gone clubbing on a skiing holiday?

Yeah they are definately becoming more popular, big clubbing themed weeks in the snow. I don’t know how they do it! Boarding is such a physically demanding sport. It beats me how they can party all night and board all day. But maybe that’s just showing my age lol!

You’re about to launch your first production on Impact Recordings called ‘The Voice’ What type of sound can we expect?

Yeah, Twisted on the 7th January is also the launch party for my debut track ‘The Voice’ on Impact. The best way to describe it is as a driving, uplifting hard trancer. Phil Reynolds is currently working on the remix, and I’m really looking forward to hearing what he comes up with. I finished this track in about May this year, so I am very very excited about it’s release. I have 2 more releases at the start of 2006 also, and I will be in the studio a lot more in 2006 as well.

Originally from Brisbane, you’re based here and married to a lovely English girl, but you had the wedding France. Why was this?

My wife, Charlie, was born in France to English parents. Her Dad used to skipper yachts out of Cannes, and her Mum was a cook on one of the yachts, that’s how they met. They love the French lifestyle. Something to do with drinking red wine whenever you like I think. Anyway, they moved to Cornwall when she was 3, and stayed there for the next 20 or so years, then moved back to France about 4 years ago. They live on a farm in a little village of about 30 people, which has one pub and one church, so we got married in her parents village. The church (luckily) is amazing, and is about 200 years old. It was an awesome day!! My family came over from Oz, and we had about 50 or so travel over from London too. The mayor of the village who married us (it’s not legally binding to get married in a church in France, you have to do all the legal stuff at the “mairie”, the local mayor's office) couldn’t speak english, so it was all translated, which was an experience. But he learnt the closing speech in English, which was a nice touch and quite emotional. After all the legal papers we signed, we went to the church for the ceremony, which to the way we are used to it is a bit round about face, but the day went off without a hitch. One of the best days of my life...

There is a growing trend for the top DJs to play directly from computers. This changes the dynamic of the DJ, as the focus will be on creativity rather than beat-matching. Do you thing this will be good or bad for the dance scene?

I don’t think it makes a lot of difference to be honest, to me anyway. I think every DJ should be creative in their sets, regardless whether they have to beatmatch the tunes also. Creativity and tune selection is the major part of what we do, so whether you get the tunes you play from a laptop, or directly from your record bag, or CD case, the creativity should always be there.
