Let's Meet Poly’s Little Helpers Dani and Bex

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 12-12-05 13:32

It’s 5:30am on a Sunday morning. The weather is cold and damp, and the wind is whistling through the dark London streets. Totally unfazed by the unforgiving English climate Bex and Dani T are standing outside a club enthusiastically handing out flyers promoting the next Polysexual South event. Working for parties is certainly not a glamorous job. In fact it’s flipping hard work. You have to be up at all hours handing out flyers, sorting out guestlists, organising flyer teams, carting boxes about and generally doing anything you can think of to make the party go as well as possible; but the rewards can be far greater. You get to have lots of fun; go to lots of parties for free; meet loads of new people; and get the satisfaction of helping put on an amazing event.

To find out a little bit more about the role of the promoter, I spoke to Bex and Dani who spend nearly every weekend promoting one of the UK’s biggest hard dance brands, Polysexual South.

Ahead of Polys’ first ever Xmas party on 17th December with Rob Tissera, Andy Farley and Ed Real playing I had a chat with the girls.

You both work for Polysexual South. There are probably lots of people out there that would love to be involved in such a strong promotion… how did you get the gig?

Bex: I’ve been involved in Polys since the beginning which almost a year ago now. I’d been promoting smaller London parties for a couple of years before that and Dickon who used to head Most Wanted Events noticed my passion for the scene and asked me if I wanted to get more involved. I jumped at the chance and here I am a year later, more enthusiastic than ever!

Dani:I joined the team after Bex. We had both been helping out with Afterlife beforehand, and I had really got the taste for club promoting. My full time job for the last three and a half years has been an events organiser, which has obviously helped me, as club promoting is just the fun side of this! My passion for the UK club scene and for music and my seeking for fun and enjoyment has also really benefited me.

What does your day-to-day role consist of for Polysexual South?

Bex & Dani: Website promotion mainly. Listing and chatting about our upcoming parties on various different message boards. We also manage a team of flyerers at weekends, collect in guestlists, and come up with innovative marketing ideas to make our party stand out from the rest. We organise the décor, production and special effects, research and choose new and exciting performers, not to mention planning our outfits for each party!

Polysexual usually has very strong line-ups and excellent production. Do you have any plans for 2006?

Bex & Dani:Plans for next year…. We have already put together a promotional plan for Polysexual South for the whole of 2006. Of course we cannot disclose all of its contents but we can warn you to look out for crazy themes and lots of silliness! We have also changed our music policy slightly to adhere to a more uplifting vibe: expect more euphoric, hands in the air hard trance and hard house anthems.

Dani and Bex partying at Slammin’ Vinyl

When you are not promoting Polys what do you both get up to?

Dani: I also help out with Hardcore Euphoria and Old Skool Euphoria and of course Afterlife (up until the 18th December). And when I am not working I am generally out there on the dance floor having a wicked time at hardcore, hard house and house events in London and all over the UK! Or sleeping! Other than that….. Shopping of course!

Bex: As you’d expect Dani & I have been going to and helping out at events and parties together up and down the country as well as all over London pretty much every weekend for over two years now. We’ve been known to travel for up to 5 hours before for a night out! So considering that and my ‘normal’ job, alongside spending time with my boyfriend and my friends, it doesn‘t really leave me with much time for anything else to be honest.

What are the rewards for working so hard for each party? Do you enjoy it?

Dani:I love it! The main reward is when you stop running around for 2 minutes during the night and you can stand upstairs at the Fridge, or on the side of the dance floor or in the DJ booth and watch everyone having a wicked time and smiling! This is the best reward any promoter can hope for in my opinion!

Bex:It really is an amazing feeling watching all those beaming faces on the dancefloor and realising you played a part in it. Also I get great satisfaction in sourcing new talent (whether it be DJs or performers) and seeing them do their thing on the night. Trust me when I say that the financial rewards are minimal — so these are the things that I love about promoting which keep me motivated.

What advice would you give others that want to get involved in promoting?

Dani: Just get out there! I think that flyering is a very good way of getting involved, as it is a good way to meet the promoters and it is a good sign of commitment. We used to flyer all weekend, from Friday night until Sunday night!! (PS — we always have room for more flyerers so drop me an e-mail if you are interested… danielle_giggles@hotmail.com)

Bex:Like Dani said, just get out there. Be friendly and introduce yourself to as many people as possible. Take notice of things that go on at all the events you go to, what works and what doesn’t and always be on the look out for new talent. But most importantly — never take yourself too seriously, it’s all about having fun at the end of the day.

Those PVC Outfits

What is the most bizarre or unusual thing you’ve had to deal with as part of your role?

Bex & Dani: There are too many bizarre and unusual moments in Brixton!!! But I suppose dressing up in PVC outfits for August’s party was quite bizarre!

Who are your favourite Poly’s DJs?

Dani:Polysexual’s own — Mark H; Polysexual South’s own — Ed Real, Rob Tissera & K90.

Bex: If you mean who’s my favourite DJ that’s played for Polys then it has to be Rob Tissera. I remember being asked what my ideal line-up for Polys would be in an interview a while back and Mr Tissera was top of my list. When he played for Polys the first time I was in heaven — I’d have that man’s babies if he’d let me!

Thanks to Benz, Clare HDL and Nish for the photography.

The legendary Poly's party vibe descends upon London Town once again and this December, for one night only, the Polysexual South crew will transform the infamous Fridge into the craziest ski resort ever! Dishing out the Christmas crackers will be the jolly Santa Rob Tissera, Poly’s south resident, Ed Real and a very special surprise visit from Polys little helper.

Completing this Xmas feast will be Tidy's favourite Elf – Paul Maddox, Star of the North – Hinsley and London’s own Del Walsh.

So dig out your salapets and dust of your moon boots and prepare yourself for some serious snow related silliness. Après ski has never been this much fun!
