What happens when you blend Steelo & The *Ting*? And no smart arse you don’t get ‘Sting’: it’s Proactive time baby!

How dare they! How dare a bunch of young hard dance rebels conceive a party that doesn’t play commercial hard dance artists, does not use the massive, mainstream venues, doesn’t fill their line ups with ‘paying guest list’ artists… how dare they be heralded as one of the most exciting events in London…how bloody dare they!
Party Proactive is back and it’s getting bigger each and every time it steps off the plane! Based around a mantra to provide London with something different, it’s about blending the old with the new and like some mad scientist, waiting to see what they have created!
Steelo & The *Ting* epitomise the eccentricity of the party. Resident DJs, their shining (and slightly odd) personalities are foundation stones of the musical focus of Proactive. Renown throughout the scene for their verging on ridiculous antics, they are 2 incredibly talented DJs who are fast becoming regulars on the biggest line-ups in the capital.
Before Proactive returns to Fire Club in Vauxhall next weekend, we wrote some questions on a Word Document, attached it onto an email, sent it to them, asked them to reply in a witty and informative manner, attach it to another email and send it back to us. They kindly did and here are what they had to say for themselves… how dare they!!!! [Sorry couldn’t resist one more...].
So let’s head straight in at the deep end: how come 2 DJs who are recognised as being from such different musical backgrounds are going to be teaming up at Party Proactive?
Steelo: Like lilt, it will be a totally tropical taste... but better.
The *Ting*: I love Steeeeeeellloooooooo’s crazy edge. I love house, breaks and electro and I love mixing things up as much as possible; who knows what might happen!?
Steelo
You both play under alias/pseudonyms. What made you decide to live your DJ lives under these guises and not under your given name?
Steelo: It’s close to my actual name, Steve Lowe. It came about because a mate of mine couldn’t be arsed to say my real name anymore and it just stuck.
The *Ting*: I couldn’t spell someting, so settled for anyting shortly before becoming theting. So much more adventurous than Zoe Hart don’t you think?
So Steelo how long have you been resident for Party Proactive and how did this come about?
Steelo: I’ve been involved with DJing for Proactive for a while now since it was at the Purple Turtle but weren’t officially made a resident till last year. I think it happened because I threatened to rape Paul’s cat or something, can’t quite remember now.
The *Ting*
* Ting* you’re more than just a resident DJ for Party Proactive, what is your other involvement with the brand?
The *Ting*: I originally set up the label with Paul Jack, although these days it’s more Paul and Joanna’s baby, however I’ll always be the Proactive fairy godmother bringing a special kind of magic that only a *Ting* can bring.
Steelo you were recently voted the No. 25 in the World of Break Beat DJs. What was your reaction when you found out and are you aiming for a higher position next year?
Steelo: I was pretty shocked when I found out, it’s quite a big thing to achieve! My initial reaction was joy, mainly because it was another excuse to go and get twatted again. I’m hoping next year I’ll do better, bigger celebrations afterwards innit.
What’s in the production pipeline for you both at the moment?
Steelo: I’m going to be getting in the studio soon, it’s a bit hush hush at the moment, a proper secret squirrel style project. You’ll have to wait till it’s finished to see I’m afraid. I’m pretty sure it will be bad all day though
The *Ting*: I’m finishing off a track with Technikal at the moment, and starting a studio engineering course sometime early next year. Other projects include working with Sol Ray and Kevin Energy.
Steelo & Alex Parsons
* Ting* you’re a well known DJ in both the commercial hard dance world and also the more underground fetish scene. For you which is the most enjoyable to play at and why?
The *Ting*: Proactive is definitely the best place to play as this is my in-between club. It’s the best of both worlds. The dressing up, the mixed crowd, the excellent hard music in one room and the funky in the other. The underground fetish scene is great for experimental sets and fantastic outfits, the commercial dance scene has more hardened clubbers and can take a faster pace for longer. So you see, Proactive is the way forward man! Bowaiii…
*Ting* you have always been better known for demolishing dance floors with the harder sounds. Is this move into breaks, electro and house something we are going to see a lot more of?
The *Ting*: I will continue to play fantastic music across the board. Hard music is where my main genre is, but I’m enjoying the diversity of the slower bpms. Once I’m done with that little lot I’ll turn to the kitchen and start playing the pots and pans, I hear you can get a wicked beat out of a large colander and a wooden spoon.
*Ting* you have been known to add a live element to your performances with the addition of live vocals — are we going to see you break into song during your back to back?
The *Ting*: Almost certainly, my integration of vocals over tracks is getting better and better. It’s a learning process singing live, there’s more to consider.
What about a duet Steelo?
Steelo: I have the most angelic voice in the world. If I wasn’t DJing at Proactive I would kill Charlotte Church and replace her.
The *Ting*
Steelo your reputation with the ladies proceeds you some what. Do you think you could get away with any funny business with *Ting* in the DJ booth?
Steelo: Reputation with the ladies??? lmfao! Sorry, back to the question… funny business with *Ting *? I could always see if she wants to try some ass to mouth but I’m not sure if the dj booth in the Firepit is big enough for that. F*ck it, might as well give it a shot though.
The *Ting*: What you saying Steelo? That you wanna snog me? Word of advice mate, I’d stop calling yourself an ass if you wish to succeed in any oral activities.
So can you both give us a sneak preview of what we can expect at Proactive in December?
*Steelo gets his arse crack out *
*Ting* keeps her top on....
Seeing as it’s Party Proactive and The *Ting* will be dressing up in something fabulous, Steelo what are you going to be doing (and please try to come up with something more imaginative than a trendy urban t-shirt and Diesel jeans)?
Steelo: I’m going to come as Harold Shipman.
If you were both invited to a dinner party and someone who didn’t know who you were asked what you did… what would be the answer?
Steelo: Entrepreneur of the gabba mince-step movement.
The *Ting*: Founder of the Steelo arse crack filler society.
If you were the host of said dinner party and you could choose any 3 people from the past or present as guests: who would they be?
Steelo: Can’t we pick anyone from the future? That’s not fair. Well, in that case I’d have to go for the Dalai Lama, Copernicus and David Hasselhoff.
The *Ting*: Ohhh David Hasselhorfffff Great choice Steelo. Also from a similarly well educated and interesting background would be John Lydon, Pamela Anderson and Gonzo from the el muppetitos.
And finally your word of the day? (N.B. Steelo: Booowai, strictly, pselect are all banned from this section of the interview)
Steelo: There's too many words of the day, such as — “bad all day”, “ah, emu”, “wickedbad”, “take it, take it”, “in your beak”, “no boobs”, “get a haircut”, “curses”, “you whalehead”, etc. etc. you get the idea.
The *Ting*: You got “take it, take it”, from that Fashionistas Porn flick didn’t ya?!
Thanks to The *Ting* and Steelo for their time!
