I Love VC preview: why Paul Glazby and Kate Hammond still love Vicious Circle

Reported by Macavity / Submitted 23-11-05 01:07

Five years ago Paul Glazby had a dilemma. He’d made a few tracks with a very distinctive sound, which were going down a storm in clubs, but being very different to other tracks at the time meant they didn’t fit into the style of the existing hard dance labels. The solution: launch one of his own — so in October 2000, after getting together with Les Harris and picking a quirky name the Vicious Circle hard dance label was born.

It was an instant success. Its first release, VC001 was Paul Glazby’s ‘Kick It’. and it instantly sewed the seed for what was soon to become the fastest growing label in the UK.

Since then it’s seen a constant stream of important tracks from a whole raft of incredible artists including seminal names such as Captain Tinrib, Andy Farley, Justin Bourne, Ben Stevens, Dynamic Intervention, Ali Wilson and the late RR Fierce..

Its first foray into albums came in 2002 when ‘One from the Hard Box’, mixed by Paul Glazby and Andy Farley shot off the shelves and became one of the best hard dance labels of the year. It was followed this up earlier this year with its album ‘I Love VC’ mixed by Paul and his young protégée, Ben Stevens.

Alongside its releases and Paul’s budding DJ career VC also launched it own forum so its core of dedicated fans could chat about everything Vicious and beyond. It also started its own merchandising range and earlier this year, after hosting some very successful second rooms at big events it launched its first fully-fledged club night at The Fridge in Brixton,I Love VC. It was packed to capacity with hundreds of fans who insisted that it was the best party of the year and begged for a repeat. Listening to their fans, that’s exactly what they decided to do, so on Saturday 26th November I Love VC returns to The Fridge for a 5 year retrospective of Vicious Circle.

To get you in the mood I spoke to Paul Glazby and Kate Hammond, who runs the brand alongside Paul (as well as being his girlfriend), to find out a little bit more about why they still Love VC.

How did the idea for Vicious Circle come about? Why run a record label?

Paul: I did my first few tracks back in 2000 but at the time the style wasn’t particularly suited to any of the labels around; Tidy, Tripoli and Nukleuz all had a certain sound and mine wasn’t like that. I thought the best way to get my stuff out there was to do it myself.

How did you decide on the name and the logo?

Paul: The name came from a really bad joke, but it seemed like a good name for the label. The logo went through a few changes before we ended up with the one we have now, but a circular saw is a vicious circle so that’s why we have it.

Where is Vicious Circle based?

Kate:In sunny Sheffield! I’m still fairly new to the area as I’m not from around these parts. But Paul has lived here all his life. It’s a great city, and as each day passes it starts to feel more and more like home!

At the beginning did you have a definite musical style that you wanted to embody?

Paul: Just the harder more energetic end of hard house. There was a big bouncy thing going on in hard house back then so we sort of bucked the trend but were still popular enough to carry some weight within the scene.

Over its history VC’s developed into a brand as you also sell merchandise, run a popular forum full of ardent fans and run events? What next?

Kate: Well our next project is the launch of our new download site VCmp3.com, hopefully going live around Christmas. This has always been something that we knew we had to do, and which will hopefully make us a lot more accessible to different consumers. We realise our back catalogue is already available on other download sites, but VCmp3.com will be the only outlet for some very exclusive releases, so should generate a lot of interest.

We are also launching a brand new website — www.ilovevc.com. Currently this is acting as a micro-site for our I Love VC events, but in the New Year will be launched as our new home for Vicious Circle online.

Today what are both your day-to-day involvements in the label? In others words what’s actually involved in running a label/brand?

Paul: My time is taken up with studio commitments, organizing remixes, licensing tracks, sorting out the royalty statements etc.

Kate: I look after a lot of different areas, from accounts & invoicing to event management & design. I ensure that our release schedule is keep up to date, which is quite time consuming when we’ve got a lot coming out. In an ideal world I’d like to focus on the marketing side of the business a little more, as that’s what I did at uni. But there are so many other things that need doing I have to spread my time over all of them equally. I’m not complaining though, I love it. Anyone who knows me can see that.

Paul Glazby

Apart from you and Paul, who else works at the label and what are their roles?

Kate:Ben works in the office with me, he is our online store & dispatch manager. We would be lost without him! Then there is Les, who I guess you could say is a silent partner of VC, but isn’t so silent! Les helps us make the big decisions within the company, and is always there to help at events etc.

Did you every think at the time that it would become one of the biggest hard dance labels?

Paul: No, I never imagined we would ever have a following like we have now.

Do you both ever get a chance to do anything else, which doesn’t involve dance music?

Kate:Well we don’t have time really no, but we make time. We try to go to the gym every morning, but Paul is a lot better at sticking to this than me I must admit! We do make an effort to switch the laptops off at a reasonable time at night, but sometimes we can still be sat there working away at 10pm. But at the end of the day it’s something we’re both very passionate about, so it kind of makes it easier to handle.

Do you each have a personal favourite single or album from the VC stable?

Paul: My favourite single would have to be ‘Yamamba’ by RR Fierce & K-Live, my favourite album would be ‘One From The Hardbox’.

Kate:My favourite single is probably ‘99.9’. In my clubbing days I’d hound the DJ to play Paul’s remix! And I would always put it on at after parties. Haha.

What things are you both most proud in terms of Vicious Circle?

Paul: When we have an event like at the Fridge in July and you get a massive turn out, seeing all the people having a good time at something you’ve helped organize is really good and I suppose just to be still going after 5 years is an achievement in itself.

Kate:Yeah I’d have to agree with Paul. It’s events that really bring it home. Seeing the following we have in the flesh, hearing them cheer when our tracks get played! That’s the most rewarding for me. I’m especially proud of the fact that 5 years on, Vicious Circle is still going strong, and I can’t wait for our birthday celebrations @ The Fridge on 26.11.05. The first I Love VC back in July was so overwhelming. And I’m sure this one will be just as special!

Thanks to Kate and Paul for their time and photography

More: When Vicious Circle rolled into London a few months ago with their I Love VC album launch, no-one expected the night to turn out like it did. We knew it would go off….but not in the way it did! Incredible, unbelievable, breath-taking, and they were up against the massive Global Gathering which lured thousands out of London, yet still they came to I LOVE VC, and in their droves too.

It is of no surprise that I LOVE VC is coming back to the Fridge on November 26th to celebrate the 5th birthday of Vicious Circle, and in true VC style, they’re making it bigger.

The king of Vicious – PAUL GLAZBY and his protégé BEN STEVENS lead the pack and bring with them one of the remaining original godfathers of Hard Dance – the mighty IAN M. Making his Vicious debut is another legend, the infamous STEVE THOMAS. It’s very rare we get to hear a hard set from the ex Tripoli Trax and Trade superstar, and his set in particular is guaranteed to get the whole of London talking. Vicious Circle’s favored engineer and the boy who presses all the right buttons, Mr. PAUL MADDOX also makes a debut and with SIMON EVE and JUSTIN BOURNE on board the DJ line-up equates to something untouchable, and unrivalled! Finally someone who needs to introduction whatsoever – Captain Tinrib – LIVE, need we say anymore!

The Techno-Lab is under the watchful eye of tenpm, who with Tim Clewz and DJ GRH will be making sure you’ve somewhere else to slope off to if your liking is music a bit less brutal on the ears.

Not only this, to celebrate 5 years of Vicious Circle, Paul Glazby Presents... A Retrospective Of Vicious. What will he play? You decide! Help Glazby construct his set, as the door of the Vicious Vaults are unlocked. After 5 years of churning out tune after tune, anthem after anthem, the time has come! A set never to be heard again! To vote go to www.ilovevc.com from Friday 7th October.

There is more...

This night will be the official launch of the new Neonate release 'Heatwave' by DJ GRH, with a tenpm remix on the flip. For signed copies of this storming release, be there during tempm's exclusive set.

So, Saturday 26th November is the date for your diaries and there is no other event taking place in London this night that compares to what Vicious Circle have on offer. FULL SCALE production, bigger than before, and a first class line-up that put quite simply is THE DOGS BOLLOCKS!

The very first I LOVE VC was almost full to capacity, this one looks set to cause road blocks. Tickets are on sale NOW, to avoid disappointment. So if you want to be a part of this spectacular event, click away. Tickets can be bought from www.ticketweb.co.uk AND of course from www.ilovevc.com. If you love VC as much as we do, we'll see you on the dancefloor!
