Just Say Yes! as Tekelec Records present Electrilogy AKA Ali Wilson, Matt Smallwood and Lee Osborne

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 09-11-05 15:21

Take the finest tech trance and mix it up with the best electro and funky house with a smattering of breakbeat pressure and you’ve got the sound of Yes! A new concept in club events hosted by Tekelec Records. We caught up with Electrilogy, Tekelec’s new DJ showcase featuring Ali Wilson, Matt Smallwood and Lee Osborne to find out what’s the skinny with their new event and tag-team showcase...

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the sound of Yes!

Hi guys, hope all is well? Now, we always see the three of you out and about together but how did you all meet? And how was Electrilogy born?

(Ali) We’ve all been mates for a good few years now although we all met separately. I met Matt at Trinity back in 2000 and realised we lived round the corner from each other so we started making tracks together and drinking in the same watering holes! Hehe!

(Matt) We didn’t meet Lee until a year or so later, at Riot! I think. We were all pretty much into proper hard house at the time, maybe a smidgen of techno here and there, but as time passed, we all matured together and moved onto this fresh new sound of techno, electro and tech trance. I think this is how Electrilogy was born, it was just a meeting of three like minded friends who musically were all in the same place at the same time, it just felt right. Like the next step if you like.

We know about Tekelec the label from a previous article on HarderFaster, now tell us why you’ve decided to start Yes! in association with the label and what’s Yes! all about?

(Lee) Well basically, Yes! will be a place where we can showcase all our newest productions and bring in like minded DJs/producers to play alongside us. DJs who, like us, really believe that this fusion of sound is the future in dance music. People who have heard any of our new material have been really into it, and saying how different it was from anything else that about at the moment. Taking this into consideration, we felt it was time we introduced everyone else to this new era in dance music so that you too can experience it, and what better venue than the amazing Hidden to do it?!

(Ali) A lot of club nights in London are very centred on hard house, but we at Yes! want to open people’s minds to this new idea and stay away from the generic hard house sound. The music policy will range from funky techno, electro techno and tough tech trance. This really is the next level. New. Fresh. Exciting. The way we believe clubbing should be.

So why should people come to YES! and how will it differ from other club nights in London?

(Ali) As we mentioned before, we really believe that this fusion of techno, trance and electro is the future in dance music and this hybrid of sound can be found nowhere else in London. So in short I guess the music policy is the fundamental difference between Yes! and any other club night in London.

(Matt) The three of us that make up Electrilogy have been involved in dance music for a long time and even though we’re all still young, have over 25 years experience between us. This will be evident in the way we throw this party, from the spot on music policy and booking of the right DJs for the smooth running of sound, to the general running of the night with regards to CD giveaways, signed promotional material and all round production. We also have a great team of people from Taktikal who are helping us out too (namingly JC) who are also working hard alongside us.

(Lee) Plus the fact that Tekelec already looks as if it’s going to be one of the biggest new labels on our scene with support from the likes of Carl Cox, John Askew, Andy Farley and Anne Savage to name a few. Yes! is the only place you will be able to hear the new releases up front and personal, in an incredible venue, before anyone else has got their hands on them!

(JC) I’ve been good mates with Ali, Matt and Lee for ages now, and when they approached me with this idea for the party Yes! I offered to help straight away! We’ve not had long to put the party together, but we are so proud of the line up, it’s amazing! I haven’t been this excited about a new event for a long time, it’s so different to anything else that’s going on at the moment, a truly innovative idea! I for one can’t wait for December 3rd!

What DJs will be gracing the decks at Yes! then guys?

(Collectively) For the launch on December 3rd we have tech trance legend John Askew from Kiss 100fm. John has to be the hottest and most sought after tech trance DJ/Producer in the country, if not the world at the moment with 3 mega hot residencies at The Gallery, Cream and Ministry of Sound, as well as his own weekly Monday night show on Kiss 100. We also have Ian Betts who will be playing a Six:Thirty records showcase so we can expect lots of fresh new tunage from Mr Betts! Warming up for us from 9-11pm will be 2PhunkedUp playing a tough house set, then next up we have three up and coming tech trance/techno DJs Matt Kaycee, Dave Irwin and Ben Gold all battling it out in the booth together, and trust us, this will be exciting! The music will then progress throughout the night into tech/trance/techno. As a special treat we have a world exclusive showcase from Electrilogy, which is the musical collective spawned from Tekelec. The three of us (Ali Wilson, Matt Smallwood and Lee Osborne) will go back2back2back for the first time, airing our releases for the first time, anywhere! Hosting the Terrace will be the mighty Tom Real, along with Jonty Scruff, DJ Rebekah and Kate Lawler (Yes, THE Kate Lawler and she’s awesome!) Max Cooper vs Raw Hedroom are also on the bill, and Max is an amazing DJ, you gotta see this guy scratch! He’ll be there on 4 decks, 2CDJs, Ableton Live and all with his production partner Raw Hedroom previewing their latest tracks! Yet another London exclusive! All of these DJs have been enjoying major success on the circuit of late and with this in mind, we’re sure that YES! should be the only choice of event!

All three of you have your individual styles when you play out, but when you’re as one as Electrilogy do your styles change or do you each play your individual sound? How will it work?

(Matt) You’re right to say that we all have our own sound as individuals, but playing as Electrilogy is about playing together as a collective. After all we’re all on the same team, not competing against each other like some DJs, trying to play the hardest record for the next DJ to mix into, so we want the music to flow naturally between all three of us.

(Lee) Yeah it’s all about combining all three of our styles to make one individual sound, that’s what Electrilogy is all about.

(Ali) That’s exactly right, at the end of the day we’re all into similar styles of music anyway, otherwise this whole thing would never work! Although I may try and slip in a cheeky Gabba track for Osborne to mix into just for fun! Haha, joke! But seriously, as far as Electrilogy goes, our music will be predominantly tech trance with funky techno and electro influences all in the mix!

So what kinds of DJs have influenced you then?

(Lee) Well I know I speak for all of us when I say that over the past couple of years we’ve really opened our eyes a lot more to all the amazing music that’s actually out there!

(Matt) Yeah that’s so true, I mean we limited ourselves to hard house a few years back, but a few trips to Ibiza and it was DJs like Carl Cox, Trevor Rockliffe and Armin Van Buurin that were really boiling our spuds!

(Ali) Armin’s marathon set at Air in Birmingham earlier this year totally blew me away!

Now moving onto the night itself, will there be any goodies on offer for the clubbers attending?

(Ali) What, the line ups not enough? Haha! Yes of course there will be! We will have an exclusive Electrilogy mix CD (the first of its kind!) for the first 100 through the door, as well as signed Tekelec releases, so get there nice and early peeps!

(Matt) And on top of that of course, we have a London exclusive from John Askew, a world exclusive from Electrilogy, a Six:Thirty records showcase from London legend Ian Betts, Max Cooper and Raw Headroom on 4 decks, 2 CDJs and Ableton Live, Kate Lawler AND DJ Rebekah all under one roof! Now there’s many a treat there I’m sure you’ll agree!

Ok, sounds wicked! Well thanks for your time guys and all the best with the party! Any last thoughts or comments?

(Lee) Well, everything has been said really, but… JUST SAY YES! See ya there people!
