10800 seconds with Mr Simon Rutherford before his world exclusive 3 hour set
Reported by Wiggii

Simon Rutherford is an established artist within the hard dance community. At one time or another, most would have heard his unique and totally flawless sets. From the very small intimate parties in underground venues to main stage at all the big events in established clubs and venues, he has played them all and left everyone that heard him more than satisfied. His mixing and technical abilities are what some would say are the best they have heard in a long time, giving the scene as we know it today something fresh and exciting. Accompanying this sheer talent is a very down to earth, proud and friendly character who just loves what he does and does it in style.
This month without exception Basic has proudly invited Mr Rutherford to take control of its sister promotion and second room, 2Trance. Bringing you yet another first . . . a world exclusive 3 hour showcase with Simon Rutherford.
For those that don’t know could you tell us a bit about yourself?
Well, I’m 6’4”, brown hair, brown eyes . . . . Oh, and I’ve been DJing trance all over London and the midlands for the past 4 years or so for everyone from Heat, Logic and Tilt to Wildchild, Frantic and Bedlam…
It was noted not to long ago that you were changing musical direction from that of just trance/hard trance. So what attracted you to Basic?
I moved into a more European tech trance sound about 18 months or so ago, and also began playing a lot more psy trance about 12 months ago. I’ve always been a trance man at heart, but the slower, chunkier techno groove of tech trance just blew me away and there was no stopping the transition. I’ve played for Basic a couple of times before and they’ve always given me free reign to play whatever I liked, which was pretty rare. It’s hard to find clubs willing to let you play anything outside the norm, so it was great to get that opportunity.
It’s a 3 hour set you’re planning, so what old gems and new classics you will be dusting off for Basic?
Getting the chance to play a 3 hour set is just awesome. I’ve wanted to do this for so long, I can’t wait. I’ll be going right back and pulling out a lot of the tunes that got me into the sound from the beginning, as well as the timeless monsters like ‘Loops n Tings’ by Marco V & ‘Phantom Manor’ by Mark Norman. Those two haven’t left my box for years!
What would you say have been the highs and lows of your career to date?
My biggest high would have to be playing main room at Space in Ibiza in 2003 in front of a massive, up-for-it crowd. It was just surreal stepping up to the decks at one of the greatest clubs in the world and tearing the place apart. Awesome stuff!
Can’t name any real lows as such. It’s all good!
Tell us something about yourself that nobody else knows.
I’m wearing odd socks (I packed my gym bag in the dark this morning!).
This isn’t the first time you’ve played for Basic so could you to explain to readers what to expect at a Basic event?
As mentioned earlier, Basic’s good in that they don’t mind taking a risk and trying something new. It’s not always the smartest move to make in such a fickle industry, but they’ve stuck to their guns and done well to build a loyal following, which gives their events a great atmosphere.
Are you where you want to be in your career at the moment and do you think your progression has been constant over the last year or so?
I am pretty happy with where I am now, but I’ll never be completely satisfied. I always want more, and as with most DJs I know, I’m my own worst critic and nothing is ever really good enough. I’m always comparing where I am with those ahead of me and how far off I am from what I want to ultimately achieve, and that helps keep me focused and determined. I just need to remember to stop and appreciate what I have — something I don’t do nearly often enough. As for the progression, for any DJ it happens in waves and I think it’s how you handle the peaks and troughs that makes the difference at the end of the day. It takes a lot to put up with the politics and bitchiness involved in the scene and no matter how much you try there’s no way to avoid it, so you just suck it in and get on with it. Some people get their break after 12 months of hitting the scene, some take 5+ years. It’s all about timing and making the most of every opportunity.
Where do you see yourself a year from now?
I couldn’t possibly predict something like that. I’ve had the honour of playing at some pretty amazing events in the past 12-18mths that I never dreamed would be possible, so where I go from here is anyone’s guess —hopefully still bigger and better! I'm keen to keep playing internationally as much as possible, but I work full time during the week so that can be a bit limiting. I’d also like to have at least half a dozen or more tunes released and get my production to a point where I’m able to do a solo release.
And finally, I’m sure many male HF’ers would like to know what it’s like being Mr Zana Mills . . .
Better than you could ever imagine!
Thanks to Simon Rutherford & Zana Mills for the use of their photos.
