You dirty people you! DirtyGroove reviewed Reported by EvilDave / Submitted 02-11-05 21:06 “Oh my god!”… was my exclamation when I walked into Hidden on Saturday night. My earliest memories of the building hosting DirtyGroove stretch all the way back to 1999, when as a fresh faced 21 year old I could be found bouncing off the walls frequenting nights such as Trinity and Twisted and back then most of you will remember that the venue was a stripped bare arches affair called The Chunnel. What a difference six years makes! As well as my musical taste mellowing just a tad (gone are the days of hoovers and horns for me), this venue can now be described as nice perhaps even plush, maybe even somewhere you could take your Nan out for her first large one…. Hang on forget I said that because someone who reads this might actually do that and sketch a load of party goers out as Nana Margie struts her stuff to some fat baselines in her twin set and pearls… scary thought! In all seriousness it’s a fantastic new look to the place, I loved the way it has been decked out. I did intend to arrive early doors for DirtyGroove to get stuck into some filthy dirty house music because I was also intent on indulging in some ‘dirty’ shots offered to the first 100 people in. However, I was reliably informed that this had unfortunately, been cancelled. Never mind I thought these things happen but it did mean that I did arrive a tad late. Because of this I must apologise to Nick Ronin and Rysty for missing both your sets. I did, however, ask around and got a general thumbs up from all the peeps that had arrived just as things kicked off. Before I knew it midnight was upon us and it was time to say hello to Tom Allan spinning out some awesome slices of filth. Tom’s style had me all confused in a wonderful oh so wonderful way… is it tough? Is it dirty? Is it uplifting? But what I do know is that it gawd damn rocked! His top tunes had to be ‘phuture’ — Max Codeta, ‘Say What’ — Richard f and ‘Here What I Say’ — Hooked. Décor in the main room was fantastic and Tom added to the colour and vibe, it was a set that was as big in excellence as that boy is in stature. Next up was our very own DirtyGroove Dave Joyce. Now for those people who liked their meat rare Dave did not disappoint, working up some tunes that were nice and raw. By this point he had the room in the palm of his hands and everybody was truly loving it, which was a perfect set up for Jon Carter to arrive and worked the crowd into an absolute filthy mess. His tunes were so dirty that I really felt like I needed a wash afterwards… even behind my ears, which is very unusual for me. Halfway into his set in the main room I have to admit that I did sneak into the Kurruption room to have a gander at my old chum Lizzie Curious looking like she was having a total ball behind the decks during her birthday set. I am not going to go on about it too much but what I will say is that the crowd in that room gave her a standing ovation when she came to the end of her set and the room emptied after she had finished… nuff said! Back into the main room I was pleased to see that Helen Joyce had just strapped herself in. The start of her set, I have to say, gave me a warm feeling inside. Unfortunately, this was due to the fact that I was leaning against a speaker at the time and I am sure that the bass-trembling tunes she was dishing out caused me some kind of internal bleeding… NURSE! Have to say that it was a total absolute blinder and a sea of bodies were bouncing around on the dance floor to such tunes as Full Blown — ‘Some Kinda Freak’ (Sebastian Ingrosso Remix), Pryda — ‘Aftermath’, Martijn ten Velden & Lucien Foort — ‘Bleeep!’ (Original mix). Not wanting to disappoint as the crowd begged for more she finished off with the sublime Moby — ‘Dream About Me’ (Sebastian Ingrosso remix)… pure class! 5am time and due to me having such a good time my memory gets just a little bit hazy at this point. I can still remember that James Lewis blew me away with some of his tunes and my all time favorite of the night was ‘Metallica is Dancin’ (Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso’s Booty Remix), the reworking of the ‘Enter Sandman’ riff on that tune is just fantastic. My legs might have been tired by this point but the crowd still lapped every second up! A lovely touch at the end of the night was to see all of the DirtyGroove crew together in the DJ box… you all looked so fresh faced and full of life ha ha!... and I am sure that Tom remembers every minute of that phase of the night! Okay so does DirtyGroove get the thumbs up from me… hell yeah and hell yeah again! It was one of those events that people will be talking about for a while, you guys rock bring on the next batch of filthy dirty fun!
