The Gang of Four: Twist introduces four new residents

Twist is the infamous weekly top London afterparty that most people seem to have an opinion on. It has been called the marmite of clubs as people seem to either love or hate it. Not to rest on its laurels, Twist is always striving to improve and after a recent series of parties, namely the Girly show and Boys’ club, it was decided to add four of the most exciting talents in hard dance to booster its already envious resident roster. Twist is now in its third year and with a strong team behind it, including Steve, Stefan, Jennie, Rich, Charlie, Anastasia and Sven it looks forward to its fourth. So in addition to already having strong two of the greatest legends of hard dance as foundation residents, Twist bring you... The Gang of Four.
Tom Basquil
Steve Maynard literally burst on to the scene back in June 2004 with a string of gigs at Insekt, Wildchild, Byte and Frantic, including their 8th Birthday at Koko, Hard House Academy, Alliance and has been booked for their future events such as Timeless, Hard House Academy’s 5th Birthday and More at SeOne. With his production now taking off as well, having his first tune sign to Hard Sounds and his latest release with Tom Basquil ‘Rock dat sh*t’ being signed to the new Club Republica compilation (Paul Glazby CD) and also being tipped as Justin Bourne’s future star, we are proud to announce him as one of the new Twist residents.
Cally Gage won the Tidy Weekender Competition (July 2004), and has since taken the scene by storm. Playing at all Frantic events, Blast, Peach Goes Hard and many more she has built up a following of dedicated clubbers! She has already been booked for all Frantic gigs in 2005 including Timeless, Sundissential, Slammin Vinyl, Slinky and much more! Having just finished her first two tunes, with K Complex and Ben Bennett we are excited to welcome this UK's fastest rising female star.
James Nardi needs no introduction, having started out in the scene over 6 years ago and then having a break he is now back! As a promoter for the ever growing promotion Insekt and a guest at nights such as Savage, Insomniacz, Frantic and Trade in Cape Town and with his tour of Australia and New Zealand coming up in September he continues to grow as a DJ and producer. Being one half of Aftermath and Killerhurts his production has gone from strength to strength. With releases on Flashpoint, Nine nine nine, Toolbox and Tripoli Trax and is now being tipped as Pete Wardman’s DJ/Producer of the year, James will always be depended on to create sets that are dynamic, fresh and exciting.
Tom Basquil may not be a name that many people know yet but once you see him play he will not be a name that you forget in a hurry. Tom is better know for his production in the scene, but after taking the promoters and clubbers by storm with his first set there was no question about whether he would be on the line up! He’s played back to back with Karim at Hard House Heaven, Insekt and also had sets back in the days of Provocation and Matrix. Production-wise he has had releases such as Creator, Menace, his remix of Hardcore Poison and now along side Steve Maynard gets ‘Rock dat sh*t’ signed to the Club Repulica compilation. We welcome new resident number four!
James Nardi
Firstly, congratulations to all of you on your new residencies at Twist. Were you surprised to be offered the residency?
Steve Maynard: Yes I was very surprised! I’ve been going to Twist since it began and was just happy to finally get a set there. To be offered a residency is pretty unbelievable for me.
Cally Gage: Why thank you very much. I was quite surprised actually, I have played at Twist a few times before and loved it but never thought they'd actually ask me to be a resident. It’s great, isn’t it?!
James Nardi: Thank you very much. Yes I was very surprised to be honest. I’ve been attending Twist now for a couple of years. It’s one of my favourite places to go of a weekend. I thought there may be a couple of slots going as both Peter Ward & Bianca had recently left the Twist camp. I was asked to play as part of the boy’s month a while ago & I guess what I played must of gone down well. I’m also thrilled for Steve, Tom & Cally.
Tom Basquil: Thank you! I was very surprised... just to be part of July’s Boys Club was wicked in itself, let alone making it a regular thing! It’s all happened so quickly as well, having been going along to Twist for ages and now to be behind the decks is almost surreal!
How does it feel to be playing along side such real legends as Ian M and Karim?
SM: For me personally it’s amazing! Both Karim & Ian have been favourites of mine since I got into the harder end of this music. They are both pioneers of the scene and I’ve learnt a lot from them through going to see them play regularly.
CG: It feels amazing, as you said they are legends and to be alongside them and be part of such a great party is really exciting and motivating. At last, I’ll hopefully get to meet Mr M!
JN: I’ve known both Ian & Karim for ages now. Of course it’s a privilege to be on the same resident’s roster as them both.
TB: Just to be on the same line up was always an aspiration but this is amazing! As they are such an important part of Twist it’s easy to get complacent and you can forget how phat it is to have them playing all the time. You certainly get your money’s worth... and then some!
Steve Maynard
How does the music you play at Twist differ from what you play at a night party?
SM: I think playing at Twist will give me the opportunity to experiment a bit more. The sets are a bit longer than I would usually get which will give me the chance to build the music a lot more. I’ll probably play a few more techy tunes than I usually would, I think the techno sound goes down really well with the Twist crowd. But to be honest it wont differ all that much. I’ll just play what I think will keep the dance floor moving while keeping the music as fresh as I can!
CG: Quite a lot actually, it lets me go back to my filthy roots as such! I love to play all aspects of hard dance but being a resident at Twist enables me to explore the harder end even more.
JN: The Twist crowd is pretty mature when it comes to music. I’m able to play tracks that I would normally play at a normal night time event, not so many of the big tunes that most other DJs are playing. I will be road testing a lot of the new Aftermath & Killer Hurts tracks there too.
TB: I’d say it’s much the same... you might expect difficulties in keeping everyone going but the crowd are always raring to go so you just have to deliver!
Twist has one of the most dedicated, educated and loyal followings of any party. How do you think you will be accepted?
SM: The last two sets I’ve played down there seemed to go down pretty well with the Twist faithful, so I’m hoping I will be accepted. I do like to think that both my music and mixing skills are quite intelligent.
CG: Oh God, don't scare me! As I’m already a resident at the mighty Frantic I kinda know all about loyal followings and being accepted and I think the fact that I play hard dance across the board will help me to be accepted in my new found home.
JN: Well hopefully I should fit right in.
TB: The reception I’ve had so far has been fantastic!! I really couldn’t of hoped for a better one. Twist has always had a great mix of DJs who work together really well so it’s hard to see where you can fit into it all but I’m glad to get the chance and hopefully along with the other new ressies we will add a fresh new dimension to it all!
Cally Gage
Twist has always operated a resident music policy to ensure the quality of music is consistent. How important do you think this policy is to the success of Twist?
SM: Well it must be pretty important as Twist is a very successful party & has survived some rough times. Steve is an excellent promoter and has a good strong team behind him so I know the party is in good hands. I think four new residents is a really good idea as there will be something different on offer each week. I have faith in all the new residents that they will deliver quality music week in week out!
CG: I would say that it is very important as it gives the DJs and the clubbers the chance to grow together as such. Each week you know what you’re going to get and how good it is going to be. DJs can learn which records really work with the loyal followers of Twist and make the party what the clubbers want.
JN: It’s very important. So many parties just book the flavour of the month, that way there is no real consistency with the direction of music. Having a strict residents’ policy means the party can be sculpted to the needs of the clubbers and the promotion.
TB: I think the proof is in the pudding! Twist’s residents all have their own place in making Twist what it is and all other something different to the next getting the balance right is what makes it work so well!
Why do you think Twist evokes such strong reactions from most people?
SM: That’s a difficult question, I never really understood why some people get so uptight about Twist on message boards etc. Some people seem to have an awful lot to say about Twist and have never even been. Don’t knock it till you try it!
CG: Twist has an amazing reputation as the best after party in London, so people come to the night with very high expectations which are often met and exceeded. This would make them want to come back time and time again and making them all feel part of the Twist family — it just seems to be the best place to go early on a Sunday morning!
JN: Haha… I’m not really sure to be honest. At the end of the day it’s a club where people come to have fun, catch up with friends and escape some of their week’s hassles. I wish everyone would stop all the childish bitching and silly politics.
TB: Well because it’s at the top of its game so to speak. Twist is one of those places you don’t need to think about going to... you just go and have a good time (it’s not hard!), it’s nice to have places like that where you know you’ll have a good time regardless. If you have that in something of course you’ll praise it! On the other hand it’s not all praise, but it’s good to have critics, it keeps you on your toes!
