It could be said that 2005 has been a wonderful year for festivals in the UK. Glastonbury sold out in a day, Live8 created the biggest ever world music event and throughout the country many events seemed to bask in a new sun of optimism. Behind the scenes, however, a greater number of promoters struggle to keep their heads above water in the vast sea of events flooding the market of a finite audience. Promoters simply booking big bands for big bucks have failed to see a similar return. As such innovation has become the mother of invention.
Ironically London, for all its size and mass of population, has struggled to maintain regular festivals. Individual concerts for bands come and go but a discerning public seem unwilling to create brand loyalty when other distractions vie for their time and attention.
In 2004 a potential heavweight contender was unveiled. Get Loaded in the Park seemingly came from nowhere and demanded a sceptical capital pay attention. With over 10,000 people in attendance Madchester was reborn for one fleeting afternoon. Voted ‘Best New Festival 2004’ by the UK Festival Awards Committee, the sun scorched grass of Clapham Common paid homage to the Happy Mondays and a date with the irrepressible Shaun Ryder & Bez. For those there at the time it was no suprise to discover that their set was nominated for ‘Best Live Moment’ at the UK Festival Awards.
In Easter this year the Mondays joined forces with Liverpudlian heroes the Farm on stage for two sell-out shows at 48 Hour Party People at Brixton Academy. Due to popular demand, this summer GLITP brings you both bands exclusively for their final London show of 2005. This promises to be history in the making with the Happy Mondays showcasing two brand new tracks, performed live for the very first time and their first new material in over a decade.

Commenting on GLITP, Shaun Ryder remarked, “Get Loaded has been a great brand to be involved with. When we first set up the club night, we put a heavy emphasis on pushing new bands and giving them a chance that they wouldn’t normally get and it’s just snowballed since then. At last year’s event when the Mondays got back together there were over 30 new bands getting down and we have big hopes for this year’s batch.”
Recently added to the bill and playing live exclusively at GLITP will be Stereo MC’s — arguably the biggest UK hip hop group of all time. Having toured with the Happy Mondays many moons ago the Stereo MCs will be offering new material from their 5th studio album ‘Paradise’, as well as old favourites and they commented:
“We’re really looking forward to playing a live set at Get Loaded. It’s gonna be great doing a live show in our own back yard. We’ve already played Glastonbury and Wireless festivals plus a whole host of European dates so far this year and the new tracks are going down really well. It’s going to be fun playing with The Happy Mondays again too.”
If that wasn’t enough, joining them on the main stage will be one of the the south’s answer to Madchester groups like the Stone Roses and the Mondays, Flowered Up. With classic tunes like ‘It’s On’ and ‘Weekender’ (the video that summed up a generation all on its own) and an absence of 13 years from the media‘s glare the boys are back....

The superstar DJ/producer, Perfecto Records boss, film-scorer and one of the main men responsible for bringing house music to the UK, will be spinning an exclusive Get Loaded-inspired set.

Oakenfold’s addition to the bill will be a massive coup for GLITP. Having produced the Happy Mondays’ first album Pills n’ Thrills n’ Bellyaches (with studio partner Steve Osbourne), Oakenfold helped carve the band a distinctively dance friendly sound, making the Mondays one of the most important bands of the late 80s / early 90’s. Oakenfold also worked on classic Happy Mondays tracks like ‘Step On, ‘Kinky Afro’ and ‘Loose Fit’, and rather fittingly, he’ll now be spinning a special ‘Get Loaded-inspired’ set (taking in Balearic anthems and indie classics),
Fatboy Slim is f**king in London!
Fatboy Slim will be spreading his Midas touch in a special London appearance at GLITP as his Southern Fried Records imprint host their very own ‘Big Top’ tent on the Common. No stranger to playing to the masses with 250,000 turning out to see Fatboy on the beach in Brighton 2 years ago, with a further 360,000 congregating to see him in Rio a year later.

This is also the first time since the legendary DJ Battle in a Boxing Ring at Brixton Academy back in 1999, that Fatboy Slim has appeared together with NYC’s acclaimed Armand Van Helden — who himself will be playing his only UK festival of 2005. Cagedbaby and Grandad Bob play live with additional DJ sets from Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Touche and DJ Deekline.

Elsewhere, Snow Patrol take a well earned rest from supporting U2 on their worldwide tour and selling over 1.8 million copies of ‘Final Straw’ with a DJ Set to savour. Fellow rockers Elbow also put on their DJ hats for the day as their third album is about to drop, whilst Primal Scream’s Mani and Clint Boon (Inspiral Carpets) will be reviving the Madchester magic. The Libertines’ Carl Barat also gets down on the decks, playing under his Dirty Pretty Things guise.

An Audience with Howard Marks
GLITP are also honoured to have the services of “the most sophisticated drugs baron of all time”, the one and only Howard Marks, who will be performing his renowned An Audience With… During the mid 1980s, Howard had 43 aliases, 29 phone lines, and 25 companies trading throughout the world as part of his International Cannabis empire. He later served 7 years of a 25 year stretch in America’s only Federal Death Row prison, before writing the acclaimed books Mr Nice & The Howard Marks Book of Dope Stories.

In another twist, it has been revealed that Howard Marks will be reading exclusive extracts from his forthcoming new book - the much anticipated follow up to the legendary ‘Mr Nice’ for the time ever at Get Loaded in the Park. On the day, Howard will combine sketches/stories from his cult Mr Nice show, with readings from his new work.
Get Loaded in the Parks is mainly about providing people with top quality entertainment of all kinds in a convivial atmosphere and a beautiful patch of green where freedom and tolerance reign.
What should people look out for?
People should always look out for surprises.
What would the perfect festival drugs timetable be? How would I move from one intoxicant to the next?
I prefer to begin the festival with a joint of skunk, then, ideally, several glasses of Pimms (failing that, a few cans of shite lager), then another skunk spliff, then some gin and tonic. At this point one should consider enjoying a champagne meal and then move on to the Class As, chainsmoking nepalese hash spliffs while so doing.

Sean Rowley will be showcasing his Guilty Pleasures with a host of special guests including Terry Hall (The Specials) playing the tracks you shouldn’t really like, but secretly worship. There’s further madness from the all-year tanned Cuban Brothers who will be hosting the whole show, plus one of the founding house labels Junior Boys Own present Terry Farley, Pete Heller, Rocky & Diesel — a collection of key DJ/Producers who worked their magic on early material from the Happy Mondays (‘Stinkin’ Thinkin’) and the Farm (‘All Together Now’, ‘Groovy Train’).
The Comedy Store
The world famous Comedy Store will be co-hosting one of the support tents, with laughs galore courtesy of some of the UK’s hottest tipped new comedians, namely John Fothergill, Roger Monkhouse, Mike Gunn, Junior Simpson and Gordon Southern, with more very special guests still to be announced.

In between the stand up comedians, X-FM’s John Kennedy and Jeff Automatic will be DJing around live performances from hot new bands The Infadels (Diesel U Music Award winners 2004 (Best Electronic Act and Best Live Act), Oceanside, Amusement Parks on Fire, Apartment, Mohair and Ambershades. In the same tent GLITP have offered the chance for two unsigned bands to performance live on the day as part of a UK search to find the bands of tomorrow, via a competition on Virtualfestivals.com. The winning bands have recently been announced, with Intervurt & Whitestar claiming the final 2 bands slots.
