Trancegeneration Red & White party @ The Soundshaft... Reviewed

Just a scant twenty-four hours before Trancegeneration, there were doubts it would go ahead at all. London reeled as our worst nightmare revealed itself in painful detail on TV. Was it disrespectful to go ahead with a trance event — a night solely geared towards sheer, rootless pleasure? Or was staying in spending Friday soberly and sadly a kind of defeat? The TG promoters faced a difficult decision, but after message after message of support and enthusiasm poured in, and the transport system hauled itself to its feet, the news spread — the party was on.
Hitting the beers a bit hard at home, and taking several ‘for the journey’ meant that this reviewer was already thoroughly overexcited by the time destination Soundshaft was attained. Resident Ehren Stowers was up in the tiny precarious DJ booth when we arrived… and spinning the inspired set of his life. Glorious tune after glorious tune, including Ayumi Hamasaki’s ‘M’ (Above & Beyond remix), ‘Everytime’ from Lustral (aka Chakra and The Space Brothers), Armin van Buuren — ‘Shivers’, and a great mix of Paul van Dyk’s new track ‘The Other Side’. Seriously the best set Ehren has played yet — energetic, loads of go, and with more of a ‘peak-time’ feeling than usual.
Twenty-something brother duo Corderoy were up next, and absolutely rocked it as well. I’m a big fan of these two… the fact they both have day jobs while Lisa Lashes lives in a fucking mansion is nothing short of a travesty. Big tunes included Lennox — ‘Servant Of Justice’ (Alex MORPH remix), GD — ‘Pukaar’, and most unexpected of all ‘Andromeda Heights’ from our very own Apollonia, aka Tania Mann and Peter Dafnous.
Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the tranciest of them all Mr Matt Hardwick followed and did not disappoint the crowd, nailing them with euphoric, uplifting trance. Best of all was Dogzilla’s new blinder of a tune ‘Without You’, a sublime, rock-influenced track that is slaying dancefloors left, right and all over. Only Matt and PvD currently have the tune, and London boy Matt Hardwick is making it all his own. Faultless. Last up of the guests was little Adam White, dropping such sparkly trance gems as Solarstone‘s ‘Release’, a Keane — ‘Bedshaped’ remix, and Paul van Dyk’s ‘For An Angel’. I’m afraid at this point the excessive consumption of the evening and morning caught up with us and we slid off into the grey dawn.
For a Friday night with a really top-level line-up, it was a bit quiet, but under the circumstances, the attendance was a testament to the massive goodwill among the Trancegeneration regulars. There was a whole lot of bouncing, rapturous smiles and hugging all and sundry. This girl didn’t stop dancing all night, and I am fast approaching thirty and thoroughly cynical. Londoners — and clubbers especially — don’t need an excuse to let rip, but there was a real sense of defiance and solidarity. In the grand scheme of things, we’re no nearer to making this a perfect world, but there’s not that much wrong with the human spirit if we can pick ourselves up and be happy like every single person was at Trancegeneration.
