Rebirth 3 review — the return of hard dance to the Kent club scene

Trilogies. They’re great, aren’t they? When one, perhaps even two helpings of something just isn’t quite enough, you end up having three times as much as you originally intended and realizing that it was a wicked idea in the first place, and why doesn’t more stuff come in threes, goddamnit! Apart from bad luck, which is bad and should be banned.
Anyway, anyone lucky enough to experience the three installment’s in Kent’s newest hard dance promotion Rebirth will know exactly what I’m talking about – having recently thrown the third successful party in their Trilogy (on May Bank Holiday Sunday) at The Heron Club in Lydd.

Having started from humble beginnings (don’t they always!) throwing illegal raves in woods and fields around the Kentish countryside, Rebirth has been building up dedicated followers for well over a year now – testified by the 280-odd smiley faces present on Sunday evening. 280’s not too bad a figure really, when you consider Homelands was on Saturday night and it was a Bank Holiday.
I’d visited the Heron club during the day to watch Lloyd and Jeffski B running about like loonies trying to get the place set up, and to watch the transformation from Sunday afternoon restaurant into banging Hard Dance night spot was amazing. Some cool backdrops were in place, and although the lighting was minimal it set the mood remarkably. The cammo netting on the ceiling also gave the venue a moodier, underground feel. The club has undergone a massive half a million pound overhaul in the last 18 months – the hardwood flooring throughout, the marble ‘wave off/wave on’ toilet facilities and redesigned bar and games areas a far cry from the dungeon-like days of old.
75% of the 280 were packed in by 10:00pm, creating an amazing atmosphere for that time of the evening – although the tension was present in Lloyd’s (one half of the Rebirth management) face earlier that evening, as the free Pre-birth party kicked off at 6:00pm with James Nation, Paul Dortenzio and Dr Mark controlling the decks for the three-hour warm-up shindig.

The three lads played a nice range of build-up gear, ranging from the KY Jelly Babies remix of Misjah and Tim’s ‘Access’ to the more up to date sounds of BK and Glazby’s ‘Outta My House’, and pretty much everything in between. It was a lovely evening, appreciated by the clubbers as they were escorted out of the side door and back round to the main entrance to pay the £8 entry fee for the rest of the evening.
Rick Hard was given control of the decks from 21:00 – 22:30, slamming some “Future Hard Dance” alongside neat scratching skills and some proper classics…….most notably a rather corking remix of Delerium’s ‘Silence’… a complete floor-filler, one of those real hands-in-the-air moments that we all live for that got the crowd geared up for the rest of the night.
Zappa (one of the coveted Rebirth Residents) was on next, plying us with his trademark dirty London sound – think OD404’s remixes of ‘Street Tab’ and ‘Jungle Style’ by Testube Babies and you’re halfway there. It was pretty clear that there were some technical problems, however – one of the decks kept skipping, causing pretty much every DJ a bit of stress, but they all carried it off as if nothing had happened, keeping the crowd rocking away!
Glen Gavin’s second appearance for Rebirth proved to be a bit of a jaunt down memory lane, with some bounce classics (‘Screwdriver’ by Rachel Auburn) getting practically everyone on the floor and hopping like nutters. I was especially chuffed that he played the O.G.R. remix of ‘Welcome’ by Committee, but both Lloyd and I were most impressed with Glen’s skills on the DJM600 – he twisted and tweaked each track to within an inch of it’s life to come up with some truly awesome effects, proving that it’s not just about the tunes…

EZ Duzzit resident JK was the penultimate jock for the evening, providing us with an hour’s worth of uplifting tuneage, with some real crowd-pleasers – mainly with Nick Rafferty and The Coalition’s ‘No Other Love’ Remix and ‘Sunset’ by Azure, which got the crowd singing along in unison for almost the whole of the track!!
By the time local hero Jeffski B (the other Rebirth Resident) stepped up to the decks the whole crowd was at boiling point, and when he dropped ‘Lost In Love’ (the Paul Janes remix!) by Legend B as his first tune that was it – we were up, up and away for the next hour and a half! I have to admit to being a big Jeffski fan, and his set was a testament to his skills. Despite one pretty major mix-ruining record skip, he still had us in his sweaty little palms and took us on a journey across the hard and uplifting side. JK stepped up for an impromptu b2b with Jeff for the last half hour of the night, showing what (IMHO) could be a very impressive pairing – hopefully Rebirth will put them together soon!
As the lights went up at 4:00am, we were all chanting for one more and Jeffski smilingly reciprocated with Prime Mover’s remix of ‘Come On’ by Breather, finishing the night off with a bang – and giving me and 279 other nutters another reason to smile on the way out!!!!

Rebirth is proving to be the leading hard dance promotion in Kent at the moment – their parties are irregular (the last was in March, the next in July) and the location is out of the way, meaning their clientele are always there because they want to be, and haven’t just accidentally stumbled in after closing time. The DJ line-ups are next-to-none, rivaling those in London for sheer skill and technical ability and prove that you don’t necessarily need big names to have a wicked night.
Eryk Orpheus and Group 185 were spotted, there were post-Homelanders finishing their weekends off in style and several of Brixton’s usual suspects were in attendance.
Lloyd was handing out mini-flyers for the next Rebirth (16th of July featuring Lucy Fur) on our way out, thanking everyone personally for coming and wishing them a safe journey home – something not every promoter has time to do these days.
But back to the talk of trilogies – most of the time when one’s over you’re left with the feeling that it was all worth it, you learnt something, had some laughs along the way and yet you feel a bit sad that it’s all over. Thankfully, with Rebirth it looks like the trilogy is just the beginning.
