Are you ready to Party, Proactive style? Queen Maxine is ready to rock!

Reported by Jacob / Submitted 17-06-05 11:10

If you happen to be a hard dance fan, you may think that the rise of the female dj began with the likes of Anne Savage and Lisa Lashes… well think again! Queen Maxine has been blazing a trail through clubland for almost 20 years now, commanding huge respect from both clubbers and her peers — in fact Steve Thomas cites her as a favourite. Maxine has achieved notoriety on a global scale.

Twice voted amongst the worlds top 100 djs by the readers of DJ Magazine, Queen Maxine has the ability to rock any dance floor, be it playing hard house, techno, or in more recent times, dirty house and electro beats. A favourite with the boys and girls of the gay scene, she has taken her sound to Trade, DTPM, and not forgetting her very own legendary party, Kitty Lips.

Queen Maxine

In the studio, Maxine has teamed up with Kitty Lips co-promoter, Vicki Red, producing the Trade anthem ‘Keep Rockin’, and has released material on Choci’s Chewns and React.

On Friday July 1st Queen Maxine brings her unique sound to Party Proactive @ Studio 33 — a night sure to be memorable, to say the least! I caught up with her to get the low down on where it all started, what she’s been up to in recent years, and what we can expect from her at Party Proactive…

Proactive Records

So Maxine, where did it all begin for you, and did you ever imagine back in the early days that spinning records would become such a major aspect of your life!

I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I’d be involved in music, especially as my career training was in video and not sound. I certainly wouldn’t change a thing; I love dance music and adore playing to a crowd. I started dj’ing back in the early 80s, playing jazz funk, rare groove, and hip-hop. Then in 1986, I discovered house music and have never looked back since!

Over the years, you have played for the now infamous after party, Trade. Everybody who djs there seems to have great memories or stories to tell. Why do you think Trade was so special, and any memories you might want to share with us now?

It was an awesome club, filled with amazing people. I think the timing for Trade was just right — uncharted territory where complete and utter hedonism ruled the waves. Anything could happen, and boy did it!

What was it like being asked to host your very own room with Vicki Red at the recent 12th birthday party?

Laurence is a close friend who over the years has been very supportive of both Vikki and myself — so to be invited to do our own room again for Trade was an honour.

Give me five of your all time favourite records…

Strings of Life — Mayday
Access — Misjah & DJ Tim
Everybody Loves the Sunshine — Roy Ayers
Close To You — The Carpenters
Golden Lady — Stevie Wonder
Yes I know… a very eclectic mix!

When I started clubbing back in 1995, I remember you for primarily playing pumping hardhouse and intelligent techno. How has this changed, and why?

Like anything in life, you have to change and move on — it’s a natural progression. My sound has matured and is much more discerning these days.

‘Keep Rockin’ was signed to Trade Recordings back in 1997 and turned out to be a massive hit for you (featured on Steve Thomas’ Trade vol 3 cd). What’s the story behind the track and why after all these years hasn’t there been an ‘official’ remix?!

That was our first ever studio attempt at making a record. It turned out more or less as we wanted, so we were both pleased! The engineer who worked with us was ‘Zero B’ who made the anthem ‘Lock Up’. It was a fortunate coming together of minds. The track actually featured on a number of compilation CDs and we often get asked about remixes and licensing but it’s got to be credible and worth our while (if you know what I mean)!

Queen Maxine in action

Have you any plans to get back into the studio, now that your sound has taken on a funkier edge?

Yes. Pretty soon I think. I’m at ease and happy with what I’m playing now, so the next step is to make tunes accordingly.

So what producers, djs and labels are exciting you this year?

I’m liking King Unique, Eric Sneo, Soulwax, Buick Project, Misjah and Teifschwarz.

Dj’ing over a period of almost 2 decades is a great achievement! You must have played at some amazing events during this time. What have been your highlights so far, both in the UK and abroad?

Playing the main tent at London Gay Pride ’97 and ’98 was awesome — 11,000 people going beserk in a giant marquee was a sight to behold. I’ve dj’d for Madonna, Michael Jackson, Kate Moss, and Prince — they were wild parties! Oh, and the closing down party at the old Chep Lap Kok airport in Hong Kong was brilliant!!

I’ve been coming down to your most recent venture, Pony Clubb, which I can safely say is a fabulous little party! Tell us a bit about the night, and how it has been received.

I had a break from dj’ing for quite a while as I felt disappointed with how the music was progressing but then last year we (Vikki) decided it would be nice to throw a party again. We only bought quality music, confident that others would enjoy our sound and true enough, the crowd has evolved too. It’s a great little party which I always look forward to; it’s like having friends back to yours!

Whilst you have remained a fixture on the London gay scene, you’ve been keeping a low profile elsewhere in recent times. We are eagerly awaiting your return here at Party Proactive! You’ll be playing alongside the likes of Steelo, Alex Parsons, and myself in the ‘house and breaks room’- what can we expect from you, and most of all, are you ready to party, Proactive style?!!

You can expect dirty house with a splash of electro. I like to mix things up a little, and keep things warmly rolling along. Hey! Am I ready to party Proactive style? You bet your ass honey… They’ll be no holding me back!

So now you all know a little bit more about a lady who really is one of dance music’s pioneers! Come see for yourself on Friday 1st July, when Party Proactive holds its summer party in the lush surroundings of Studio 33. The theme is Mardi Gras, so come colourful, courageous, and ready to party!
